Download PDF: [S] How to Treat a Person (Islamic story)

Until his final moments in this world, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – always advised his companions and the Muslims in general to be kind to those under their control. In fact, if we look at the history of Islam, it was the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – who showed the world how to treat poor people, how to treat slaves and how to treat servants. In fact, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –created such a solid rule and law in this regard that most people saw it as a great honour to free a slave.

We can see this from the following incident.

It is mentioned that one day, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was walking and he saw one of his companions namely Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari punishing his slave. In fact, this slave had done something and the companion was hitting him with a stick. When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – saw this, he declared, “Be aware of Aba Mas’ud, Allah Almighty has greater power over you than you have over this slave.”

When the companion turned around to see who had uttered this words, he saw that it was the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was not pleased and was also showing a little anger. The blessed companion became extremely concerned and then declared, “O Prophet of Allah! I have freed this slave for the sake of Allah.”

When he said this, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declared, “Beware, if you had not done this, then certainly the Fire (of Hell) would have touched you”. (Muslim Shareef)

In fact, this also proves a very important point in Islam which is that if a person punishes his slave without any valid reason or as an act of injustice, then he should free that slave. We should ponder upon these words very carefully. How many so-called Muslims, in their position of power, greed and influence think nothing of oppressing another person? In fact, even a government official such as police, etc. would arrest a person simply because they feel they have a type of “divine” right to do so. These people have no idea that on the Day of Judgement, when they have to face the frightening events on the Day of Judgement, what answer would they give? Bear in mind that the Day of Judgement is something which is established and would never go away.

Every person would have to face the result of what he or she had done on earth. There will be no escape. The slightest amount of oppression committed by anyone would be seen on that Day. In fact, this Hadith Shareef is one among many that should make people open their eyes and treat those under their control with respect and dignity or face the ultimate destruction.
