Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that:
One day, I was in a lonely and private area and pondering upon the creation of Allah Almighty and in the Dhikr of Allah Almighty when a sudden thought appeared to me. I was informed through spiritual knowledge that I needed to visit a certain church and join the various pastors in their celebration. This was also a very difficult task that needed to be completed. I think sought refuge in Allah Almighty from these thoughts because I felt that I was been misguided. In fact, I completely ignored these thoughts.
However, during the night, while I slept, I heard a voice say to me the same thing. I awoke in terror and fright and began to think about what this might mean. When I awoke, I heard someone say to me, “Do not be afraid. You are a special servant of Allah Almighty and your name is also on the register of the Awliya.”
I was told that I should adopt the clothing of the Christians, wear a cross around my neck and enter this church. I was also informed that there would be no sin on me for doing this.
The next morning and rushed towards this place. I wore the clothing which normal pastors wear and went to this church which was based in Sim’aan. All the others pastors were already present and they waiting for their head pastor to arrive. This was the person who was going to address them and give them advice.
When this head pastor took the stand, he could not speak and seemed like something had bitten his tongue. When the other pastors saw his state, they asked him what had happened. They also informed him that they were waiting for him to speak and that were getting guidance from him only and followed whatever he said to them.
The head pastor then said to them, “The reason that I am unable to speak in front of you today is because there is a Mohammedi who is sitting among you and he has come to question you and has come to attack you.”
They then shouted that he should point out who this person is so that they could immediately kill him.
However, he replied, “No, he should be killed after proof and testimony is presented. I wish to question him on various religious issues and if he gives clear answers, you should not kill him and if he is unable to answer these questions of mine, then you are free to kill him. It is during questions that a person becomes respected or disgraced.”
All the other priests replied that they agreed to whatever he was saying and would wait for his guidance. The head pastor then arose and shouted out, “O Mohammedi! I ask you in the name of Muhammad to please stand up so that I can see who you are.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – then stood up in front of all of them and he did so reciting the Hamd of Allah Almighty.
The head pastor again shouted, “O Muhammadi! I wish to ask you a few questions and listen very carefully. If you are able to answer all of these questions, then we will follow you or else we will kill you.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – then said to the head pastor, “You may ask whatever question you wish. Also bear in mind that Allah Almighty is listening to our words.”

After he had completed asking these questions, Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him asked him whether he had any more questions to ask. The great Saint then asked him, “If I am able to answer all of these questions, will you bring faith in Allah and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him?”
The head pastor replied that he would certainly bring faith in Islam if all of these questions were answered.
Hadrat Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – then raised his head towards the heavens and declared, “O Allah, please be a Witness to this.”
The great Saint then continued to answer these questions. He declared:
- The one for which there is no two, that is Allah Almighty Who is Waahid (One).
- The two for which there is no three, it is the day and night. Allah Almighty declares in Surah Bani Israeel, verse 12:
وَجَعَلْنَا الَّیۡلَ وَالنَّہَارَ اٰیَتَیۡنِ
And We created the night and the day as two signs
- The three for which there is no fourth. They are the Divine Arsh, the Divine Kursi and the Qalam or the Pen.
- The four for which there is no fifth. They are the four revealed Books which are the Taurah, the Injeel, the Zabur and the Qur’an.
- The six for which there is no seventh are the six days of creation. In Surah Qaf, verse 38, the Qur’an declares:
وَ لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضَ وَ مَا بَیۡنَہُمَا فِیۡ سِتَّۃِ اَیَّامٍ٭ۖ
And We have indeed created the heavens and the earth, and all what is between them, in six days;
- The seven for which there is no eight, they are the seven heavens. In Surah Mulk, verse 3, the Qur’an declares:
الَّذِیۡ خَلَقَ سَبْعَ سَمٰوٰتٍ طِبَاقًا
The One Who created the seven heavens atop each other;
- The eight for which there is no ninth, they are the Angels who carry the Divine Arsh. In Surah Al Haqqah verse 17, the Qur’an declares:
وَّ الْمَلَکُ عَلٰۤی اَرْجَآئِہَا ؕ وَ یَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّکَ فَوْقَہُمْ یَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمٰنِیَۃٌ
eight Angels will carry the Throne of your Lord above them.
(In the Hadith Shareef, it is mentioned that at this moment, the Haamileen Arsh are actually four and on the Day of Judgement, there will be another four who will join them. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that this could also imply the eight rows of Angels whose number is only known to Allah Almighty).
- That nine for which there is no tenth is that group who intended to commit fasaad and mischief. In Surah Naml, verse 48, the Qur’an declares:
وَکَانَ فِی الْمَدِیۡنَۃِ تِسْعَۃُ رَہۡطٍ یُّفْسِدُوۡنَ فِی الْاَرْضِ وَ لَا یُصْلِحُوۡنَ ﴿۴۸﴾
And there were nine persons in the city who used to cause turmoil in the
land and did not wish reform.
- The complete ten days are those days when a person wishing to perform Hajj Tamattu cannot acquire an animal for sacrifice. He therefore has to fast for ten complete days. This is mentioned in Surah Baqarah verse 196:
and whoever takes the advantage of combining the Hajj and Umrah, it is compulsory for him to sacrifice whatever is available; and whoever cannot afford it, must fast for three days while on the pilgrimage, and seven when you have returned to your homes; these are ten in all;
- For that eleven for which there is no twelth, they are the brothers of Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him. In Surah Yusuf, verse 40, the Qur’an states:
اِذْ قَالَ یُوسُفُ لِاَبِیۡہِ یٰۤاَبَتِ اِنِّیۡ رَاَیۡتُ اَحَدَ عَشَرَکَوْکَبًا وَّالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ رَاَیۡتُہُمْ لِیۡ سٰجِدِیۡنَ ﴿۴﴾
Remember when Yusuf (Joseph) said to his father, “O my father! I saw
eleven stars and the sun and the moon – I saw them prostrating to me.”
Sadrul Afaadil Moulana Na’eemuddeen Muradabadi – may Allah be pleased with him – in his Tafseer explain that, “Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – saw in a dream eleven stars descending and they were accompanied by the moon and sun. All of these made Sajdah to Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him. It is mentioned that this dream was seen on Thursday night or Friday morning the night was also the Night of Qadr. The eleven star means his eleven brothers and by the sun is meant is father and by the moon is meant is meant his mother or his mother’s sister. The name of his mother was Raahil. It is mentioned that since his mother had passed away, it could mean his mother’s sister. All of these proved obedience to Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him. It also meant Sajdah because in that Shari’ah, making Sajdah as a mark of respect was acceptable.
The age of Nab Yusuf – peace be upon him – are that time was eleven. Some say he was seven and some say he was seventeen. It is mentioned that his other brothers were jealous of him because his father showed immense love and affection for him. His blessed father also knew what his other sons felt, hence he warned him not to reveal this dream to his other brothers.
- That twelve for which there is no thirteen, they are the twelve months.
In Surah Taubah, verse 36, the Qur’an declares:
اِنَّ عِدَّۃَ الشُّہُوۡرِ عِنۡدَ اللہِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَہۡرًا
Indeed the number of months before Allah is twelve
- That thirteen for which there is no fourteen, this is indicates to the number of objects that Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – saw in his dream which were thirteen in full. Eleven stars and the moon and sun.
- That group of people who spoke a lie and would still enter Jannah, they are the brothers of Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him. In Surah Yusuf, verse 17 the Qur’an declares:
قَالُوۡا یٰۤاَبَانَاۤ اِنَّا ذَہَبْنَا نَسْتَبِقُ وَتَرَکْنَا یُوۡسُفَ عِنۡدَ مَتٰعِنَا فَاَکَلَہُ الذِّئْبُ ۚ وَمَاۤ اَنۡتَ بِمُؤْمِنٍ لَّنَا وَلَوْ کُنَّا صٰدِقِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷﴾
Saying, “O our father! We went far ahead while racing, and left Yusuf near our resources – therefore the wolf devoured him; and you will not believe us although we may be truthful.”
Although they spoke lies about Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him, they would still enter Jannah.
- That nation who will enter the Fire of Hell in spite of speaking the truth, they are the Christians and Jews. In Surah baqarah, verse 113, the Qur’an declares:
وَقَالَتِ الْیَہُوۡدُ لَیۡسَتِ النَّصٰرٰی عَلٰی شَیۡءٍ۪ وَّ قَالَتِ النَّصٰرٰی لَیۡسَتِ الْیَہُوۡدُ عَلٰی شَیۡءٍۙ وَّہُمْ یَتْلُوۡنَ الْکِتٰبَؕ
And the Jews said, “The Christians are nothing” – and the Christians
said, “The Jews are nothing” whereas they both read the Book;
In reference to this verse, Sadrul Afaadil Moulana Na’eemuddeen Muradabadi – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that, “It is mentioned that a delegation of Christians from Najran appeared in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and at the same time a delegation of Jews also appeared. They began to argue among themselves and each was saying that the other is not on truth. Although they were speaking the truth because none of them are on truth, but in spite of this both groups will enter the Fire of Hell.
- The place where your name is captured in your body is the ears because when a person is called by his name, the ears are able to hear this.
- By “Az zaariyat” is meant the four winds. In other words, the wind which travel from the West to East, the wind which travels from the East to the West, the wind which travels from the North of the South and the winds which travel from the South to the North. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amar – may Allah be pleased with him – has also mentioned that there are eight types of wind. Four of them bring mercy or goodness and four which bring destruction.
- An Naashi raat. The wind which transport the clouds of rain.
- Al Mubashi raat. The wind which indicates the coming of rain.
- Az Zaa riyaat – The wind which blows away the dust and sand.
- Al Mur silaat – The wind or breeze which continues all the time.
There are four winds which are considered as objects that general bring destruction and interruption.
- Al ‘Aasi faat. A very strong and powerful gust or wind.
- Al Qaasib. A wind which has lightning and which is found in oceans or rivers.
- Al Sar Sar. A strong gust or wind which is extremely chilly.
- Al ‘Aqeem. A wind or gust in which there is a rain. The last two are found on land. (Ibn Abid Dunya).
- By “Al Haami laat” is meant clouds because Allah Almighty states in Surah Baqarah, verse 164:
وَّتَصْرِیۡفِ الرِّیٰحِ وَالسَّحَابِ الْمُسَخَّرِ بَیۡنَ السَّمَآءِ وَالۡاَرْضِ
and the movement of the winds, and the obedient clouds between heaven and earth –
- By “Al Jaari yaat” is meant the ships which travel on water.
- By “Al Muqas si maat” is meant the Angels who deliver the sustenance of the people on the 15th of Shabaan and deliver it until the next 15th of Shabaan.
- The fourteen which Allah Almighty addressed are the seven heavens and the seven earth. In Surah Haa Meem Sajdah, verse 11, the Qur’an declares:
ثُمَّ اسْتَوٰۤی اِلَی السَّمَآءِ وَ ہِیَ دُخَانٌ فَقَالَ لَہَا وَ لِلْاَرْضِ ائْتِیَا طَوْعًا اَوْ کَرْہًا ؕ قَالَتَاۤ اَتَیۡنَا طَآئِعِیۡنَ ﴿۱۱﴾
He then inclined towards the heavens and it was smoke – thereupon He said to it and to the earth, “Both of you present yourselves, willingly or with reluctance”; they said, “We present ourselves, with zeal.”
- The grave which carried the person in it and travelled was the whale which carried Nabi Yunus – peace be upon him.
- That object which has no soul but breathes, it is the break of dawn. In Surah Takweer, verse 18, the Qur’an declares:
وَ الصُّبْحِ اِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ﴿ۙ۱۸﴾
And by oath of the morning when it takes a breathe.
- That water which neither comes from the sky not from the earth, it is sweat of the horses. It is this which was placed in a bottle and sent to Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – by Bilqis.
- As for those four who were born with no mother and father, they Nabi Adam – peace be upon him, Hadrat Sayyidah Hawa – peace be upon him, the ram which appeared for Nabi Ismail – peace be upon him – and the camel of Nabi Saleh – peace be upon him.
- The first person to murder on earth was Qaabil who murdered Haabil.
- That object which Allah Almighty created and then purchased is the lives of the believers. In Surah Taubah, verse 111, the Qur’an declares:
اِنَّ اللہَ اشْتَرٰی مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِیۡنَ اَنۡفُسَہُمْ وَ اَمْوٰلَہُمۡ بِاَنَّ لَہُمُ الۡجَنَّۃَ
Indeed Allah has purchased from the Muslims their lives and their wealth in exchange of Paradise for them;
Sadrul Afaadil – may Allah be pleased with him – in regards to this verse explains that, “The giving away and sacrifice one’s life in the Path of Allah Almighty is an example which is been presented about the true make up of a believer. In other words, for this trade, the Almighty promises them Jannah. This is the indeed the Divine Greatness of Allah Almighty that He has created something and wishes to purchases it Himself. Yet, such is His Divine Mercy and Grace then He is purchasing something from us which we ourselves have not even created or invented. Whether it is our lives or wealth, both have been created by Him.
- As for that which Allah Almighty has created and has displayed Displeasure with it, it is the sound of the donkey. In Surah Luqman, verse 19, the Qur’an declares:
وَاقْصِدْ فِیۡ مَشْیِکَ وَاغْضُضْ مِنۡ صَوْتِکَ ؕ اِنَّ اَنۡکَرَ الْاَصْوٰتِ لَصَوْتُ الْحَمِیۡرِ ﴿٪۱۹﴾
“And walk moderately and soften your voice; indeed the worst voice is the voice of the donkey.”
Sadrul Afaadil – may Allah be pleased with him – explains, “It is accepted that to make a loud noise and to shout and speak is considered as Makruh or detestable. There is no excellence in this. The same with the sound of a donkey. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – greatly liked the manner of speaking softly and displayed displeasure when a person spoke loudly.
- That object which has been created by Allah Almighty and yet it has been referred to as great, major or immense is the deceit of females. In Surah Yusuf, verse 28, the Qur’an declares:
اِنَّہٗ مِنۡ کَیۡدِکُنَّ ؕ اِنَّ کَیۡدَکُنَّ عَظِیۡمٌ ﴿۲۸﴾
“Indeed this is a deception of women; undoubtedly the deception of women is very great.”
- As for that object which Allah Almighty Himself created and yet asked what it was, was the stick or (Asa Mubarak) of Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him. In Surah TaHa, verses 17, 18 the Qur’an declares:
وَمَا تِلْکَ بِیَمِیۡنِکَ یٰمُوۡسٰی ﴿۱۷﴾ قَالَ ہِیَ عَصَایَ ۚ اَتَوَکَّؤُا عَلَیۡہَا وَ اَہُشُّ بِہَا عَلٰی غَنَمِیۡ وَلِیَ فِیۡہَا مَاٰرِبُ اُخْرٰی ﴿۱۸﴾
“And what is this in your right hand, O Moosa?” He said, “This is my staff; I support myself on it, and I knock down leaves for my sheep with it, and there are other uses for me in it.”
Sadrul Afaadil – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that another reason that this question was emphasised is that Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – would remember that whenever he looks at this object, even though it may turn into a king cobra, he must not be disturbed because it is still only his stick or staff. Another reason presented is because while asking questions like this, the heart of the Nabi does not become overwhelmed by speaking to Allah Almighty. (Madaarik). It is mentioned that the name of his staff or stick was “Nab’a.”
- The most excellent of females are Sayyidah Ummul Bashar, Sayyidah Hawa – may Allah be pleased with her, Sayyidah Khatijatul Kubra – may Allah be pleased with her, Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her, Sayyidah Fatimah – may Allah be pleased with her, Sayyidah Aasiyah – may Allah be pleased with her, and Sayyidah Maryam binte Imran – may Allah be pleased with her.

- The most excellent of mount is Tur.
- The best domestic animal is the horse.
- The best of months is the month of Ramadan. In Surah Baqarah, 185, the Qur’an declares:
شَہۡرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِیۡۤ اُنۡزِلَ فِیۡہِ الْقُرْاٰنُ
The month of Ramadan in which was sent down the Qur’an
- The best of nights is the night of Qadr. This is mentioned in Surah Qadr verse 3:
لَیۡلَۃُ الْقَدْرِ۬ۙ خَیۡرٌ مِّنْ اَلْفِ شَہۡرٍ ؕ﴿ؔ۳﴾
The Night of Destiny is better than a thousand months.
- By the word “Taa mah” is meant Qiyamah.
- That tree which has twelve branches and on each branch there thirty leaves and each leaf has five colours and three leaves are in the shade and two are in sunlight. By this meant is that there are thirty days in a month. By five leaves is meant the five Salaah. Three are read when there is shade, meaning the Fajr, the Maghrib and the ‘Isha and the two which shine during the brightness of the sun are the Zohar and Asr.
- As for that object which made Tawaaf of the Ka’ba even though it has no soul and neither was Hajj compulsory on it was the ship of Nabi Nuh – peace be upon him.
- Allah Almighty has created nearly a hundred and twenty four thousand Prophets.
- Among them, 313 were Mursil or Messengers.
- As for that object whose colours and taste are different but they are from one source are the water which appears from the eyes, the nose, the mouth and the ear.
- Naqeer is a membrane which appears on a seed.
- Qateer is the shell of an egg.
- Fateel is the inner part or marrow of a nut.
- 47. This is the hair of the goat and sheep.

- When a camel screams, it utters the words, “Enough for me is Allah Almighty and He is sufficient for me.”
- A peacock utters the words, “The Most Gracious Who (befitting His Majesty) established Himself upon the Throne (of control)” (TaHa. 5)
- The partridge utters the words, “By giving thanks to Allah Almighty all the time, the blessings remain all the time.”
- The nightingale utters the words, “So proclaim the Purity of Allah Almighty when you witness the night and the morning.” (Surah Rum 17)
Sadrul Afaadil – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that by this is meant praising Allah Almighty, to recite the Tasbeeh, the Thana of Allah Almighty and there are many excellences to this which has been mentioned in the Ahadith Shareef. It is mentioned that once someone asked Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – whether the five Salaah is mentioned in the Qur’an and its times and he replied that indeed it was mentioned and he recited the above verse.
- When a frog croaks, its mentions the words, “Glory be to Allah Almighty in the jungle and in the desolate plain who is the Greatest, the All Powerful.”
- The bell declares, “Glory be to Allah Almighty, He is the truth. O ibn Adam look towards the East and West, there is no one who is forever except Allah Almighty.”
- That nation which Allah Almighty sent inspiration to although they were not humans, jinn or angels, they are the honey bees. In Surah Nahl, verse 68, the Qur’an declares:
وَ اَوْحٰی رَبُّکَ اِلَی النَّحْلِ اَنِ اتَّخِذِیۡ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُیُوۡتًا وَّمِنَ الشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا یَعْرِشُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۶۸﴾
And your Lord inspired the bee that, “Build homes in hills, and in trees, and in rooftops.”
61, 62. As for the question of where the night disappears to when day appears and vice versa, this is known only to Allah Almighty.
After presenting all of these answer, Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – asked the head pastor, “Are there any other questions which you need answers to?”
The head pastor replied that there were no more questions which he had.
The great Saint then asked the head pastor, “Tell me, what is the keys to the heavens and earth?”
The head pastor remained silent when this question was asked. His supporters around him then shouted at him, “You had asked so many questions and he had answered all of them and he has only asked you one single question, and yet, you are unable to answer.”
The head pastor replied, “I am not unable to answer this question. However, if I answer the question, I am afraid that you people will not accept it.”
All of them declared that they were prepared to accept his answer because he was their religious leader and whatever he said, they accepted as truth.
The head pastor then declared, “The keys to the heavens and earth is Laa ilaaha illal laahu Muhammadur Rasoolullah.”
When the rest of his congregation heard, all of them recited the Kalimah and became Muslims. They then demolished the church and built a Masjid. They also broke the crosses which were around their necks.
Suddenly a voice was heard saying to the great Saint, “O Bayazid! You had merely placed a single cross around your neck for Our sake and for your sake We destroyed five hundred crosses.” (Ar Roud Al Faa’iq)
