Sayyidah Zunairah Rumiyah – may Allah be pleased with her – was considered as an eminent female companion. She was also one of those blessed people in Islam who accepted Islam in the early history of Islam. She was a slave of the Banu Makhzum and in one narration it is mentioned she was the slave of the Banu Abde-Daar. When she accepted Islam, a mountain of oppression was released upon her such as the oppression which befell the poor Muslims around her.
The cruel Meccans displayed all types of oppression on Sayyidah Zunairah Rumiyah – may Allah be pleased with her – but she remained firm as a rock and steadfast in her Imaan. She never allowed any of these actions to move her away from her Imaan. She also never uttered a word of complain.
There is no doubt that one of the Meccans that were at the forefront of persecuting the Muslims was Abu Jahl. In fact, one day Abu Jahl addressed the Kaafirs and said to them, “Are you people not surprised that it is only the weak and poor that seem to heed the call of Muhammad. If the religion of Muhammad was the truth and the correct religion then these poor and weak people would not have accepted Islam before us. There is no doubt that we the rich and powerful would have been the first to accept this religion. How is it possible that this poor female like Zunairah take precedence over us? Therefore, this cannot be a true religion.”
They used to beat Sayyidah Zunairah Rumiyah – may Allah be pleased with her – every day and force her to say something against Islam and the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – but she refused to say against Islam and the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. One day, they had beaten her to such a degree that she became blind. At that moment the Kuffaar said to her, “There is no doubt that this state of yours has been the result of what Laat and Uzza has done to you.”
Even though she was blind, but her heart was full of Nur of Imaan. She immediately answered, “Laat and Uzza does not even know who visits them. This test upon me has been sent by the Divine Creator. This is what was decreed by Allah Almighty. At the same times, if he wishes, He can also return my vision.”
In the history books it is written that after the same night, Sayyidah Zunairah Rumiyah – may Allah be pleased with her – could once again see in the morning. However, the Kuffaar refused to accept this miracle and merely said that this was magic which was displayed by Muhammad.
However, very soon, Allah Almighty freed her from this oppression and torment and it was Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – who paid for her freedom. Sayyidah Zunairah Rumiyah – may Allah be pleased with her – is also one of those blessed seven people that were freed after their freedom was paid for by Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him.
