Hadrat Sayyiduna Duhaak bin Mukhallid Basri – may Allah be pleased with him. His title was “Abu Aasim” and also “Nabeel.” One of the reasons that he was given the title of “Nabeel” is because of the following incident. One day, he was sitting in the classes of Imam Ibn Juraij – may Allah be pleased with him – when suddenly an elephant came outside. All the student left the classroom to go and see this strange animal but he continued to sit in the class. His eminent teacher asked him, “O Duhaak! You are not going to see the elephant?’ He replied, ‘Hadrat! There might come a time when I will see an elephant, however, where I will ever have the opportunity of sitting in your blessed classes?’” When his eminent teacher heard this reply, he declared, “You are indeed Nabeel, (or most excellent).”

Imam Amar bin Dinaar – may Allah be pleased with him – admits that he had never seen someone like Imam Ta’us – may Allah be pleased with him – and from the people of his era, he was indeed Sayyidun Naas.

He always displayed immense fear for Allah Almighty and was extremely soft-hearted and kind. Whenever he saw someone lighting a fire, he used to lose consciousness thinking about the Fire of Hell. The same happened one day when he saw someone placing the head of a goat in a fire.

He was also extremely brave in speaking the truth in front of those in power and when it came to propagating the true message of Islam, he displayed no fear. He never feared anyone in power and did not care about anyone who threatened him.
