In Surah Baqarah, verse 143, the Qur’an declares that:

“And so it is that We have made you the best nation* for you are witnesses** against mankind, and the Noble Messenger is your guardian and your witness; and (O dear Prophet Muhammad – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) We had appointed the Qiblah which you formerly observed only to see (test) who follows the Noble Messenger, and who turns away; and it was indeed hard except for those whom Allah guided; and it does not befit Allah’s Majesty to waste your faith! Indeed Allah is Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

towards mankind.”

* The best Ummah is that of Prophet Muhammad – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

**The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is a witness from Allah.

There is no doubt that the excellence and noble characteristics of the beloved Ummah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is indeed too numerous to explain and discuss. All of these excellences are obviously noble traits which leads towards the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The reason is that all of these traits and excellences are elements which are achieved through following his example and teachings.

The dominance and the noble character of this Ummah is also an attribute which certainly distinguishes them from other communities. The Qur’an clearly describes this Ummah as the best of nations which have been sent for mankind. This attribute actually points to the beautiful attributes of the blessed Ashaab. They are those who have been first in accepting the message of Islam and Imaan.

Another distinguishing part of this Ummah is that they are those who propagate good and command people to refrain from bad. This is in fact one of the special attributes of being considered as excellent and noble. There is no doubt that being in the blessed company of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – made the blessed Ashaab attain the highest position and rank in this specific attribute. They are those blessed souls who were able to attain Prophetic grace directly at the blessed hands of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. This also proves a very important point which is that those who came first in Islam are certainly much more noble and excellent than those who came later!

This sequence in greatness is also explained by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He said that: “The best of generation (or era) is that generation in which I am, then those who are joined to this and then those who are joined to that.” In other words, “The best generation is my generation, then those who come after this generation and then those who come after that generation.”

This would clearly imply the blessed Ashaab, the Taaba’een and the Tab’a Taaba’een – may Allah be pleased with them all. There is also a fourth generation mentioned in one report from the Sahih Bukhari Shareef and this is referred to those who follow this generation. In other words, “Ittib’a Tab’a”. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has also stated that thereafter, lies would spread, meaning that as religion, honesty, piety and certainty were attached to these four generation, in like manner, thereafter, lies, falsehood and false accusation will become a common trait among people after these four generations.

As we have already mentioned, there are numerous excellences which are attached to this Ummah, however, the greatest excellence of this Ummah is that it is connected with Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him! As Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is the Last and Final Prophet and the greatest of Prophets, in like manner, his Ummah is the last and final Ummah and have been blessed with the most perfect of religion and religious laws. The Qur’an also explains this fact by describing that, “On this day, Allah Almighty has completed His Divine Favour by completing this religion.”

The wish of Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – to be in this Ummah!

In some reports it is mentioned that when Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – saw the amazing attributes of this Ummah in the Taurah which was spread over nearly seventy noble attributes, he then implored Allah Almighty, “O Allah! Please make this Ummah my Ummah”.

Allah Almighty Replied, “How can this be so when this Ummah is the Ummah of the Last and Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him?”

Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – then implored, “O my Lord! Then make me a part of this Ummah.”

Allah Almighty presented two excellence of this Ummah. He declared, “O Moosa! I have graced you among other people with Prophethood and also with conversing with Me. Therefore, accept what I have blessed you with and become among those who give thanks.”

When this was said to him, Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – declared, “O my Lord! I am satisfied with this.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that he heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declare, “When the Taurah was revealed to Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him, he read these Divine Words and in it, he also found a description of the final Ummah. He then mentioned, ‘O Allah! I have found (the description) of such an Ummah in the pages of the Taurah who will be the last to appear and also the most foremost (in excellence and nobility).’”

In other words, in relationship to time and age, they will be the last and final Ummah but in relationship to nobility and greatness, they will be the first and the most elevated. They will be those who will be interceded for. Through their Du’as, rain would appear. In their hearts, the Divine Words of Almighty Allah would be engrained. They will also be able to recite these words from memory. The spoils of war have become Halaal for them and they would also give charity. This is that Ummah for whom the laws have been made easy. All of these things like the spoils of war were not permissible for previous peoples.

(Among the attributes and nobility of this Ummah) is that when they intend to do evil, it will not be recorded against them and when they do commit this evil, only a single sin would be recorded against their name. When they intend to do good, reward will be recorded against their name and when they actually commit this good deed, then ten rewards would be recorded against their name. They will also be blessed with the knowledge of the past and present and they will be the Ummah who will eventually kill the Dajjal.

Other noble traits of this Ummah.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Once Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – cried out, ‘O my Lord! Is there any other Ummah with You like my Ummah? (In other words) those who are shaded by the clouds and those for whom the Mann and Salwa appeared?’ Allah Almighty declared, ‘O Moosa! You are unaware of the excellence of the Ummah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. As much as there is My Divine Grace on all other creation, the same (amount) alone is on this Ummah.’ Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – then asked to see this Ummah, however, Allah Almighty Replied that he could not see this Ummah (because they will appear at the end), ‘O Moosa! I will allow you to hear their words. Allah Almighty then called out (to this Ummah) and all of them declared in one single voice, ‘Labbaik Allahuma Labbaik’. Even though at that time, they were in the loins of their fathers and the wombs of their mothers.

“Allah Almighty then Declared, ‘My Divine Grace is upon you and My Divine Mercy is above My Divine Wrath and My Divine Pardon has superseded My Divine Punishment. Before you make Du’a, I will accept your Du’a and whoever wishes to reach Me through the recital of La ilaaha illal laahu Mohammadur Rasoolullah and bearing witness on this, I will pardon all his sins.’”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also stated that, “Allah Almighty also wanted to reveal this Divine Grace upon me and also His Divine Favour and he declared, ‘O Muhammad! When I addressed your Nur and I addressed your Ummah so that I could enable Moosa to hear their words, at that moment, he was not on the Mount of Tur.”

This Hadith Shareef has also been narrated by Hadrat Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with him – and the extra words in this narration is that, “Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – declared, ‘O My Lord! How sweet is the voice of the Ummah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. O my Lord! Please allow me to listen (to these words) again.’”

Imam Abu Na’eem – may Allah be pleased with him – in the Hulyah records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – who narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Allah Almighty had sent Revelation to the Prophet of the Bani Israel, Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – that, ‘Whoever meets Me in this state, that he refutes (the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), then I will place him in the Fire of Hell. Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – asked, ‘Who is Muhammad?’ Allah Almighty Declared, ‘Ahmed is the name of that being whom I have never created (anyone more) greater than him and even before the creation of the heavens and earth I had recorded his name with My Name on the Arsh. And Jannah is Haraam upon every creation of mine until he and his Ummah do not enter Jannah.’”

From this Hadith Shareef also, we come to understand and realise that this Ummah will only enter Jannah while following the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and this will be even before the other Prophets as well. We know that when a guest is a special guest, then those who follow him are also considered as special people. However, even though this description of the noble qualities of this Ummah is something which is unique, yet, they cannot be considered as greater in status than the Prophets or even equal in status to the Prophets. As a matter of fact even the greatest saint or Wali in this Ummah cannot reach the eminent state and stature of any Prophet.

Divine Revelation to Nabi Sha’ya – peace be upon him.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Wahb bin Mambah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates, “Allah Almighty sent Divine Revelation to Nabi Sha’ya – peace be upon him – that, ‘I will send the Ummi Prophet to those who are deaf, blind and whose hearts are veiled with forgetfulness, (and through this Ummi Prophet) these things will be opened. His place of birth will be Mecca Shareef and the place of his migration will be Madina Tayyibah and his kingdom is also Syria.’”

He then presented some of the blessed qualities of this Prophet. Allah Almighty even described this Ummah as the best of Ummah.

“They will command good and will prohibit evil. They will accept My Divine Oneness and will believe in Me. They will display humility for Me and whatever I had revealed upon the previous Prophets, they will testify to this and they will protect the movement of the sun, in other words, they will safeguard the time of Ibadah (they will be punctual in Ibadah).

“Indeed fortunate is that heart, that face and that soul who display humility to Me. I will grace them with inspired knowledge during their Tasbeeh, their Takbeer, their Tamheed and while believing in my Divine Unity, in their gatherings, while they are stationed, while they travel, when they move and when they are still. In the Masjids, their rows will be like the rows of the Angels while they are around the Arsh. They are My friends and my Helpers. Through them, I will remove the idol-worshippers. They will worship Me while standing, while sitting, while in Ruku and while in Sajdah.

“For My Divine Pleasure, they will remove themselves from their homes and remove the wealth which they have (in other words, they will not be miserly in spending for the Divine Pleasure of Almighty Allah). In My Path, they will fight and kill. Through their Book, the Qur’an, all other Books will be nullified and through their Shari’ah, all other Shari’ah will be cancelled. Whoever finds himself in their time and does not believe in their book, (the Qur’an) and does not accept their religion and Shari’ah, he is not of Me. I am away from Him. I have made them the greatest of Ummah and the middle Ummah who will be a witness for all people.

“When they come into true anger, they will recite My Tahleel, (Laa ilaaha ilal laahu). When they are about to die, they will recite the Tasbeeh. They will mention my Divine Glory (Sub haanalah wa bi hamdihi). They will purify their face and parts of their body. Whenever they climb higher they will proclaim “Allahu Akbar” and they will also perform blood sacrifice (Qurbani). Their book that is the Qur’an is in their chest.

During the night, they will spend in Ibadah and during the day, they will be like lions (in other words Mujaahid). Fortunate is that person who is with them, who is on their Madhab, who is on their path and on their tradition. This is My Divine Grace whom I bestow upon whomever I wish. I am the Divine Lord”.

This has been recorded by Imam Abu Na’eem. (Madaarijun Nubuwwah, Vol. 1)

The conversation between the Creator and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – about this Ummah.

Again explaining the greatness and eminent position of this Ummah, Imam Ahmed Raza Muhaddith Barelwi – may Allah be pleased with him – writes that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – states that once, “Without doubt, Allah Almighty asked me about my Ummah and what should be done with them? I replied, ‘O My Lord! Whatever You wish, they are Your servants and Your creation.’ Again, He asked me and again I said the same thing. For a third time, He asked me and again I said the same thing. Thereafter, Allah Almighty declared, ‘O Ahmed! Without any doubt, I will never embarrass you in the affairs of your Ummah.’ He also blessed me with glad tidings that there will be seventy thousand followers of mine who will enter Jannah with me. With each thousands of them, there will be another seventy thousand who will not even have to give account (of their deeds).”

The next part of this Hadith Shareef is very lengthy which again further explains the excellence and stature of this Ummah. This Hadith Shareef has been recorded by Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam ibn Asaakir – may Allah be pleased with him – from Hadrat Sayyiduna Huzaifah – may Allah be pleased with him. (Al Amnu Wal Ula)

The age of this Ummah.

In the Hadith Shareef, it is reported that, “the age of this world is seven days and I have been sent in the last days.”

In another Hadith Shareef it is mentioned, “I have hope that Allah Almighty will grace my Ummah with another half day.”

From this report, the age of this Ummah has been established as being fifteen hundred years. The reason for this is that one thousand years with Allah Almighty is equal to one day as has been established in the Qur’an.

In reference to this Hadith Shareef, certain ‘Ulama have stated that this Ummah would not survive beyond a thousand years and some have said this it would survive more than a thousand years.

Pertaining to these reports also, Imam Ahmed Raza Muhaddith Barelwi – may Allah be pleased with him – has explained that this Ummah will survive beyond fifteen hundred years. He has mentioned that what has been mentioned in regard to the age of this Ummah is not something which is against Ilme Tauqeet or the Science of Time Calculation. This has been revealed to him through the science of Ilme Ja’fer or the Science of Numerology.

Bear in mind that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had made a special Du’a in this regard with His Creator to increase the age of this Ummah. This type of Du’a has also been made in the past and his Du’a was accepted.

During the Battle of Badr, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – made Du’a for three thousand Angels to come to the aid of the Muslims. In reference to this, Allah Almighty, in the Qur’an, also promises the Muslims that if they remain firm and steadfast, then He will send five thousand Angels to aid the Muslims. In other words, such is the Du’a of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in His Divine Court that it is always increased and becomes manifold. (The same can be said about the age of this Ummah. If he has asked for half a day more, perhaps Allah Almighty has also increased this).

This is the last Ummah.

In the Hadith Shareef, it is mentioned that, “Before you, sixty nine Ummah have appeared and you are the last.”

On the night of Me’raj, Allah Almighty said to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, “Are you saddened that I have sent you as the Last Prophet?” The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “No”. Allah Almighty then asked, “Are your Ummah sad that I have sent them as the last Ummah?’ The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “No, O my Lord”. Allah Almighty Declared, “I have sent them as the last Ummah so that all previous Ummah are disgraced in front of them and they are not disgraced in front of anyone.”

There will be no knowledge or Hisaab (or giving accountability on this Ummah).

It is reported that on the Day of Judgement, all previous Ummah will be called forward and when the moment comes for this Ummah, it will be said, “Where is the Ummah of Muhammad – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him?” At that moment, the Divine Grace of Allah Almighty will become far spread and everyone will be encompassed by this Divine Grace and no one will even be aware of their Hisaab (or giving account for their deeds).

In one Hadith Shareef, it is mentioned that once the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – pleaded to Allah Almighty, “O my Lord! Please give the Hisaab of my Ummah to me”. Allah Almighty replied, “O Muhammad! Your Ummah are My servants. I will take account from them Myself and will pardon them Myself. On the Day of Judgement, I will gather the entire Ummah in My Divine Mercy and will declare, ‘I have pardoned My (Divine Rights), you also pardon the rights of one another and enter Jannah.’” There is all because of the Sadaqah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. (Al Mafuz Shareef, Vol. 3)

The seventy three groups in this Ummah.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “This Ummah of mine will become seventy three groups and all of them will enter Hell except one in which I and my Ashaab are found.”

Ibn Maja has reported this from Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam Tabarani – may Allah be pleased with him – has recorded this from Hadrat Sayyiduna Mu’wiyah – may Allah be pleased with him. Abd bin Humaid records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad bin Waqqas – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “All of those groups are (people of) Hell except one who are the Jama’at, (in other words, the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah). (Fataawah Al Haramain)

Three distinct qualities of this Ummah

In the Hadith Shareef, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “There are three habits of this Ummah which will never leave. They are jealousy, ill-feeling and back-biting. Shall I not show you a remedy? If ill-feeling appears, do not remain steadfast upon it. If jealousy appears, do not oppress the person whom you are jealous of and because of back-biting, do not refrain from your task (and duties).”

This has been reported by the great A’immah in their various manuscripts from Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Basri – may Allah be pleased with him. Ibn Adi also records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “If jealousy appears in your heart, then do not oppress and if ill-feeling appears, do not be firm on it. If back-biting appears, do not break (relationship) but trust in Almighty Allah.” (Fatawah Afriqiyah)

This is the first and the last Ummah.

Imam Tirmidi – may Allah be pleased with him – with a Hasan Sanad records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yaasir – may Allah be pleased with him – and Ibn Habban in his Sahih records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yaasir – may Allah be pleased with him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him – and Muhaqqiq Dehlwi – may Allah be pleased with him – has also recorded in the Ash’hatul Lama’at which is the Sharah of the Mishkaat from various authentic sources that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The example of my Ummah is like the rain. It cannot be said whether the beginning was good or the latter part.”

Shaikh Muhaqqiq – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that, “This proves the merit of this Ummah and that like the rain, all of it has its advantages.”

The dominance of this Ummah.

Imam Muslim – may Allah be pleased with him – in his Sahih records that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “One group of my Ummah will always remain firm on the Divine Command of Almighty Allah. No harm will come to them. Whoever leaves them or goes against them until the Divine Command of Almighty Allah appears and it will be such that they (will always be dominant) over people.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah. 12/82) (Iqaamatul Qiyamah)

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “One part, (group) of my Ummah will always be on truth. No harm will come to them. Whoever leaves them or goes against them, they will (continue) to be on this until the Divine Command of Almighty Allah appears”. (Fatawah Radawiyyah,12/176)

The age of this Ummah.

In the Hadith Shareef, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The age of my Ummah is between sixty to seventy years.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 10/34)

The trial of this Ummah.

Ibn Qutaybiyah in the Kitaabul Ashrabah narrates from Hadrat Zaid bin Ali bin Husain bin Ali – may Allah be pleased with them – that, “It is reported that once Hadrat Zaid bin Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – with his companions drank nabeez (a drink made from raisins or dates) and it was said to him, ‘O son of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, please explain to us any Hadith Shareef pertaining to Nabeez which you have heard from your pious ancestors.’ He then replied, ‘My father reported from my grandfather, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him, who mentioned that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘My Ummah is equal in status to the Bani Isra’eel. Allah Almighty tested the Bani Isra’eel with the river of Talut. For them also, He had made a mere hand full of this water Halaal and had made complete satisfaction of one’s thirst as Haraam. And there is no doubt that Allah Almighty has tested you with this drink of Nabeez. It is Halaal to drink till one is satisfied and to become intoxicated by it is Haraam.’” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 10/55)

A prediction for this Ummah.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “There will be certain people in my Ummah who will drink alcohol and will keep different names for this alcohol.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 10/56)

The Du’a of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – for this Ummah.

Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – and Iman Haakim – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam Baghwi and Imam Haakim in the Al Mustadrak and Imam Tabarani in the Kabeer record from Abu Bardah Ash’ari – may Allah be pleased with them – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had made Du’a, “O Allah! Please bestow martyrdom on my Ummah on Your Path through (either) a plague (or epidemic) or through the weapon of an enemy.”

Mawaradi records from Abu Moosa Ash’ari – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had made Du’a, “O Allah! Please favour my Ummah with death through the weapon of an enemy or through a plague.”

Imam Tabarani in the Awsat records from Sayyidah A’isha – may Allah be pleased with her – that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The end of my Ummah will either be through the weapon of an enemy and through a plague. It will be like a gland which appears on a camel and whoever remains in this will be martyred and whoever runs away from this, will be like the one who turns his back to the enemy and runs.”

In the Sahih Al Mustadrak, Hadrat Abu Moosa – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The plague is the front teeth of your enemy the Jinn and for you it is martyrdom.”

In the Musnad of Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – and in the Mu’jam-e-Kabeer of Abu Moosa and in the Awsat from Hadrat Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – it is mentioned that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The finality of my Ummah will be through Jihad and the plague which is the front teeth of your enemy the Jinn. And through both of them there is martyrdom.”

The plague or an epidemic is a means of martyrdom for this Ummah.

Shirazi in the Alqaab from Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az – may Allah be pleased with him – records that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Without doubt, the plague is a Mercy from Your Lord, and is a Du’a of your Prophet, and in future the death of those who are pious, and that is martyrdom.”

Imam Ahmed, Imam Tabarani, Imam ibn Asaakir – may Allah be pleased with them – record that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Allah Almighty will cause martyrdom to you and your offspring through the plague and through this, He will also cleanse your actions.”

Imam Tabarani in the Mu’jam Awsat and Imam Abu Na’eem in the Fawaa’id, Abu Bakr bin Khallaad record from Sayyidah A’isha – may Allah be pleased with her – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The plague is (a means of) martyrdom for my Ummah.”

Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – and Ibn Sa’ad record from Aseeb – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The plague is a (means of) martyrdom for my Ummah and (a means of) Divine Mercy and a (means of) punishment for the disbelievers.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 9/582)

This Ummah will not be misled.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “My Ummah will not be united on misguidance.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 8/212)

An Ummati who leaves behind a debt.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “When any of my Ummati takes on the responsibility of repaying a debt and continues to try and repay it and he passes away without repaying this debt (in full), I will be his guardian and representative.”

Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – has recorded with a solid Sanad from Abu Ya’la and Imam Tabarani in the Awsat from Ummul Mo’mineen, Sayyidah A’isha – may Allah be pleased with her. (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 7/83)

Sehri and Iftaar

In the Hadith Shareef, it is mentioned that, “My Ummah was always continue to remain in goodness as long they are quick (in fulfilling the act) of Iftaar and are delayed in the Sehri.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 4/649)

This Ummah and a Turban.

Imam Dailami – may Allah be pleased with him – records from Hadrat Rukaanah – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “My Ummah will always continue to remain on the religion of truth as long as they wear the turban on a hat.”

Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Wadaah in the chapter of clothing records from Khalid bin Ma’daan that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Without doubt, Allah Almighty has (bestowed) greatness on this Ummah through the turban.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 3/77,78)

This Ummah and the five daily Salaah.

In answer to a question, Imam Ahmed Raza Muhaddith Barelwi– may Allah be pleased with him – states that, “The five daily Salaah is that Divine Grace of Allah Almighty, which He has through His Great Mercy, bestowed upon this Ummah. Before us, no Ummah received this. On the Bani Isra’eel, there was only times (in a day) on which Salaah was Fard. And that too, they were only four rak’ah. Two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Even this they could not fulfil.”

In the Sunan of Nisaa’i Shareef, it is recorded from Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated in the Hadith Shareef explaining the event of Me’raj that, “Then from fifty Salaah, there remained five Salaah. Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – then said, ‘Please go again and request your Lord to decrease this because He had only made two Salaah Fard on the Bani Isra’eel and that too, they could not fulfil.’”

Allama Zarqani – may Allah be pleased with him – in the Zarqani which is the Sharah of the Al Mawaahib explains that, “There were four rak’ah which was Fard on the Bani Isra’eel. Two in the morning and two in the afternoon. It is also said that there were two also at the time of Zawaal, but they could not fulfil this.”

As far as the actual state of the previous Ummah, this is only know to Allah Almighty and what He has revealed to His special servants. However, what is clearly known is that these five Salaah were never given to anyone of them. The ‘Ulama have also explained this fact at length and have not disputed it.

In the Mawaahib Shareef, pertaining to the special qualities of this Ummah, which is the blessed Ummah, it is mentioned, “Among the special qualities of this Ummah is also the five daily Salaah. Besides (this Ummah), the five daily Salaah was never combined for anyone else.”

In the Sharah of Zarqani, on the purpose of Me’raj, there is also a Hadith Shareef which is reported in the Sahih Nisaa’i Shareef that, “This is correct and that which has been alluded to by Baidawi that fifty Salaah was made Fard upon the Bani Isra’eel during the night and day. Imam Jalaaludeen Suyuti – may Allah be pleased with him – had mentioned that this is incorrect. Fifty Salaah was never ever Fard upon the Bani Isra’eel. As a matter, not even five Salaah was Fard upon them. The five Salaah has only been joined for the blessed (Muslim) Ummah. Yes, for the Bani Isra’eel, there was only two Salaah as mentioned in the Hadith Shareef”.

In the Lam’aat of Shaikh Muhaqqiq Dehlwi – may Allah be pleased with him – and in the Sharah of the Mishkaat, it is mentioned from Ibn Hajr Makki – may Allah be pleased with him – that, “These five Salaah combined (in one day and night) is the speciality of this Ummah.”

In the Ash’atul Lamaat, it is mentioned that, “The five daily Salaah combined is unique to this Ummah.”

Ibn Abi Shaybah in the Musannaf and Abu Daud and Imam Bahiqi  in the Sunnah with a Hasan Sanad record from Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated pertaining to the ‘Isha Salaah that, “Perform this Salaah as late as possible. This has been given as an excellence to you from among the other Ummah. Before you, no Ummah has ever performed this Salaah.”

It therefore becomes quite clear and logical that even the act of ‘Isha is something which is unique to this Ummah, therefore, the five daily Salaah itself is something which was never given to any other Ummah. Pertaining to the issue of whether these five daily Salaah were given to any other Prophets in the past, the ‘Ulama have also explained this point.

Imam Jalaaludeen Suyuti – may Allah be pleased with him – in the Khasaa’is-e-Kubrah has actually named a special chapter which explains the fact that these five daily Salaah is unique to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and never done for anyone else prior to him.

Imam Muhammad, Muhammad, Muhammad bin Ameer Al Haaj Halbi in the Hulyah narrates from certain ‘Ulama that, “These five Salaah were different among various Prophets and it has been combined (or joined together only) for this Ummah.”

Allama Zarqani – may Allah be pleased with him – in the Sharah of the Al Mawaahib writes that, “Besides this blessed Ummah these five daily Salaah were never combined (in one day) for any previous Prophet or previous Ummah.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 2/193,194)

In the Hulyah, it is mentioned that, “These Salaah were varied among the previous Prophets and it has been joined for this Ummah.” He then explains that, “Fajr was for Nabi Adam – peace be upon him, Zohr was for Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him, Asr was for Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him, Maghrib was for Nabi ‘Isa – peace be upon him – and ‘Isha is something which is unique to this Ummah.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 2/198)

The ‘Isha Salaah is unique to this Ummah.

In the Hadith reported by Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az – may Allah be pleased with him – it is clearly mentioned that it is through the ‘Isha Salaah this Ummah has been blessed with greatness over all the other Ummah.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Moosa Ash’ari – may Allah be pleased with him – states that one night Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – delayed the ‘Isha Salaah until half the night and then he arrived (to perform the Salaah). After completing the Salaah, he declared, “Those who are present give them glad tidings that this is the Divine Grace of Allah Almighty upon you and besides you, no one else is reading Salaah at this time.” Or he mentioned that “except for you, no one has ever read this Salaah before.”

Imam Suyuti – may Allah be pleased with him – states that Imam Ahmed and Imam Nisaa’i – may Allah be pleased with him – record from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – (once) delayed the performance of the ‘Isha Salaah. When he arrived in the Masjid, people were waiting for the Salaah. He then declared, “Among those of religion except for you, no one is making the Dhikr of Almighty Allah (at this time).”

In the Sahih Bukhari Shareef and the Sahih Muslim Shareef, it is recorded from Hadrat Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – that the words (of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – were), “There is no one on earth (at this time reading this Salaah).”

In the Muslin Shareef, the words are, “During the night, except for you (the Muslim Ummah), no one else is waiting for the Salaah (to be performed).”

In the Sahih Bukhari Shareef and the Sahih Muslim Shareef, the blessed words of Hadrat Sayyidah A’isha Siddique – may Allah be pleased with her – are, “On earth, except for you (the Muslim Ummah), no one else is waiting for the Salaah (to be performed).” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 2/199,200)

A Mujaddid (or reformer) for this Ummah.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Without doubt, Allah Almighty will send a Mujaddid to this Ummah at the end of every century who will revitalize the religion of this Ummah.”

This has been recorded by Imam Haakim, Imam Adu Daud and Imam Haakim – may Allah be pleased with them – has mentioned this is indeed a Sahih Hadith. (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 2/643)

The various limbs washed during Wudu will be bright.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated in reference to this. And Imam Bukhaari and Imam Muslim – may Allah be pleased with them – have recorded from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – and in the Muslim Shareef, the words of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – are: “The faces of my Ummah, the hands and feet will be bright on the Day of Qiyamah because of their Wudu. Whoever among you can manage should endeavour to increase this Nur”. In other words, the area which is the actual face, one should wash a litter extra of this area and the same with the hands and feet. (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 1/159)

Wastage of money.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has declared that, “I have stopped my Ummah from wasting money (or wealth).” (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 1/808)

There will be no accountability for forgetfulness and mistake.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “There will be no accountability for the forgetfulness of my Ummah.” (Fatawah Radawiyyah,  1/197)

The entire Ummah is in well-being.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “My entire Ummah is in well-being except those who commit flagrant sin.”

In the Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim Shareef, it is recorded from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – and in the Awsat of Imam Tabarani from Hadrat Sayyiduna Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with him, the above mentioned Hadith Shareef has been recorded. (Fatawah Radawiyyah, 9/255)

Better than seventy other Ummah.

Allah Almighty has stated in the Qur’an that:

کُنۡتُمْ خَیۡرَ اُمَّۃٍ اُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ

You are the best of nations revealed for mankind.

This verse clearly proves beyond a shadow of doubt that this is the best and the most excellent of religions. This, therefore, also proves that the Ummah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is the best of Ummah. Thus, it would also prove beyond a shadow of doubt that the Prophet of this religion would also be the best and the most supreme of Prophets – may Allah’s peace be upon them.

Imam Ahmed, Imam Tirmidi, Imam ibn Maja and Imam Haakim record from Hadrat Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah bin Haidah – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has mentioned about this verse that, “You complete seventy Ummah (or nations) and with Almighty Allah, you are the best and the most noble.” (Tajalliyul Yaqeen bi anna Nabi yanna Sayyidal Mursaleen, A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmed Raza – may Allah be pleased with him)

The Nur of this Ummah will be like the Nur of the Prophets.

Imam Bahiqi – may Allah be pleased with him – records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Wahb bin Mambah – may Allah be pleased with him – that, “Allah Almighty sent Revelation in the Zaboor, ‘O Daud! After you, very soon that Prophet will appear whose name is Ahmed and Muhammad. I will never be displeased with him and he will never disobey Me. His Ummah is the blessed Ummah (or the Ummah upon whom there is Divine Mercy). I have blessed them with that Nawaafil which I have blessed the Prophets with and I have made Fard upon them those laws which I have made Fard upon the Prophets and Messengers. On the Day of Qiyamah, they will approach Me in such a state that their Nur will be similar to the Nur of the Prophets. O Daud! I have made Muhammad – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – the most excellent and have blessed his Ummah more than all the other Ummah”.

This Ummah will be the first to enter Jannah.

Imam Ajal, Faqeeh, Muhaddith Arif billah, Uztad Abul Qasim Qushayri Shafi – may Allah be pleased with him – and Mufassir Tha’labi and Imam Allamah Ahmed Qastalani Shafi – may Allah be pleased with them – state that, “Allah Almighty has declared to His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that, ‘Jannah is Haraam upon the other Prophets until you do not enter and it is Haraam upon the other Ummah until your Ummah does not enter.” (Tajalli yul Yaqeen, A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmed Raza – may Allah be pleased with him).

This Ummah will be highly elevated on the day of Judgement.

Imam Tabari – may Allah be pleased with him – in his Tafseer record from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – that on the Day of Judgement, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and the Ummah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – will be on a lofty position and it will be the most loftiest (of positions).”

Ibn Jareer and ibn Marduyah – may Allah be pleased with them – record from Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with them – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Me and my Ummah will be on an elevated position on the Day of Judgement. It will be the most elevated of positions. No one will not wish that if only they would be the ones.” (Tajalli yul Yaqeen)

The two Divine Attributes found in this Ummah.

Ishaq bin Raahuyah in his Musnad and ibn Abi Shaybah in his Musannaf record from Imam Makhul Taaba’ee that once, “Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – once had an argument with a Jew and he said to this Jew, “I swear by that Divine Being Who has blessed Muhammad – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – as the most excellent and noble of men, I will not spare you. However, this Jew took an oath and completely refuted the excellence of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. When this happened, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – slapped the Jew. The Jew then went to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and laid a complaint. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then informed Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – that since he had slapped the Jew, he should also please him. However, turning to the Jew, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declared, ‘O Jew! Adam is ‘Safiyullah’, Ebrahim is ‘Khaleelullah’, Moosa is ‘Najeeyullah’ and ‘Isa is ‘Roohullah’ and I am ‘Habeebullah.’ As a matter of fact, O Jew! Allah Almighty has blessed my Ummah with two names of His Divine Attributes. Allah Almighty is ‘Salaam’ and He has kept the name of my Ummah “Muslimeen”. Almighty Allah is ‘Mo’min’ and He has kept the name of Ummah “Mo’mineen”. As a matter of fact, O Jew! Entry into Jannah is Haraam upon all the Prophets until I do not enter and it is Haraam upon the other Ummah until my Ummah do not enter!” (Tajalli yul Yaqeen)

This Ummah is protected from shame and disgrace.

Khateeb Baghdadi  records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas bin Maalik – may Allah be pleased with him – that Sayyiduna rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “On the night of Asra, Allah Almighty  brought me close until the distance was two bow lengths or even nearer. He then declared to me, ‘O Muhammad! Are you sad that I have sent you after all the other Prophets?’ I replied, ‘No’. He then declared, ‘Is your Ummah sad that I have sent them after all the other Ummah?’ I replied, ‘No’. He then declared, ‘Give news to your Ummah that I have sent them last so that all other Ummah is disgraced in front of them and (because) they should also be protected and saved from the being disgraced by the other Ummah. All Praise is for Almighty Allah.’”

The Awliyah and the people of the Unseen.

Among the unique qualities of this Ummah is that among them there are ‘Aqtaab’, ‘Awtaad’, ‘Nujabah’ and ‘Abdaal’ which are most certain to be found.

In a Hadith Marfuh, which is narrated by Hadrat Anas – may Allah be pleased with him, it is reported that there are, “Forty Abdaals who are both men and women. When any of these men or women pass away, then Allah Almighty in their place, create other men and women.” Ibn Khilaal has mentioned this in his Karaamaat-e-Awliyah.

Imam Tabarani has mentioned in the Awsat that, “The earth is never empty of forty such individuals who are like Khaleelur Rahman – peace be upon him. Through them, the earth is established and through their Barakah, the people receive rain. Whenever any of them pass away, Allah Almighty replaces that person with another. Their title is ‘Abdaal’ (which is extracted from the word ‘Badal’ meaning ‘substitute’ or ‘replacement’).

Some of the Mashaa’ikh are also of the opinion that they have substituted bad attributes for noble attributes, hence the description of the word ‘badal’ or ‘Abdaal’ which is plural. Or they have removed themselves from all carnal and animistic attributes. As for the description that they are similar to ‘Khaleelur Rahman’ this signifies one of their special qualities and attributes which is also among their most special of special qualities and this is similar to the quality or attribute which is found in Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him. This is also one of the implication of their statement that every Wali is on the footprint of a certain Prophet and it certainly does not imply that every quality of theirs is exactly like a Prophet as this is impossible.

Ibn Adi in the Kaamil records that among these forty Abdaals, twenty two are from Syria and eighteen are from Iraq. When the Divine Command will come, all of them will instantly pass away and Qiyamah will occur.

Abu Naeem in the Hulyah records from Hadrat Sayyiduna ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Among the special people of this Ummah, they are five hundred in number. The ‘Abdaal’ are forty and not five hundred. They are not less or more than forty in number. When one of them passes away, another is substituted in his place. They are found all over the earth.”

In like manner, in the Hulyah, it is recorded from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with them – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “In my Ummah, there are forty whose heart is like the heart of Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him. Through them, Allah Almighty protects the creation from any calamity. They are called ‘Abdaal’. They have not achieved this position through their Salaah or fasting.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – then asked, “How have they achieved this position?” The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “Through been good to the Ummah and through their kindness towards the Ummah.”

In other words, they also perform their Salaah and fasting and other forms of Ibadah as the normal Muslims, however, they also have this special quality mentioned above which makes them separate from the normal Muslim.

Hadrat Sayyiduna M’aruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – has stated that whoever reads the following Du’a daily, he is also recorded among the ‘Abdaal.’ It is:

اَللّٰھُمَّ ارْحَمْ اُمَّۃَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ

In the Hilyah, it is also mentioned that whoever makes Du’a in the following words ten times a day, he is also recorded among the ‘Abdaal’. The Du’a is:

اَللّٰھُمَّ اَصْلِحْ اُمَّۃَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ اَللّٰھُمَّ فَرِّجْ عَنْ اُمَّۃِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ اَللّٰھُمَّ ارْحَمْ اُمَّۃَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ

Among the signs of the ‘Abdaal’ is that they have no children and they do not curse anyone or any object. Zaid bin Harun narrates that certainly the ‘Abdaal’ are also among the people of knowledge. Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – has also mentioned that if the ‘Abdaal’ are not among the Muhaditheen, then who will these ‘Abdaal’ be? (In other words, one of their attributes is also their immense knowledge of Islam and that they are not people who are Jaahil or ignorant of the laws of Islam).

Khateeb in the Taarikh-e-Baghdad has recorded from a certain manuscript that the, “’Nuqabah’ are three hundred in number. The ‘Nujabah’ are seventy. The ‘Abdaal’ are forty in number. The ‘Akhyaar’ are seven in total. The ‘Amad’ (or ‘Awtaad’) are four in number and the ‘Ghous’ is only one. The ‘Nuqabah’ are in the West, the ‘Nujabah’ are in Egypt, the ‘Abdaal’ are in Syria and the ‘Akhyaar’ are travelling the earth. The ‘Amad’ or the ‘Awtad’ are found in caves. The ‘Ghous’ is found in Mecca Shareef. When there is a certain occurrence, the ‘Nuqabah’ make Du’a to Allah Almighty in regard to this event. They display immense humility while making Du’a. Thereafter, the ‘Nujabah’ make Du’a, after them, the ‘Abdaal’ makes Du’a. After them, the ‘Akhyaar’ make Du’a and then the ‘Amad’ or ‘Awtaad’. If their Du’as are accepted then it is so, however, finally, the Du’a is made  by the ‘Ghous’ who again displays immense humility and subservience for Allah Almighty. He also continues to prostrate in front of Allah Almighty and even before his pleading ceases, his Du’a is accepted.” (Madaarijun Nubuwah, Vol. 1)

The status and stature of the Fuqarah.

A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmed Raza – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that, “When a person walks on the path of Suluk, then he increases in degrees and stature all the time. These stages are: Sulahaa, Saalikeen, Faana’yeen and Waasileen. They also possess different categories which are: Nujaba, Nuqabah, Abdaal, Budalaah, Awtaad, Imaamain, Ghous, Siddique, Nabi and Rasul. The first three is ‘Sayr ilal laah.’ Which we could describe as a Journey towards Almighty Allah, in layman’s term, and the rest of them as ‘Sayr fil laah’ or the Journey within the Divine Attributes of Almighty Allah. Obviously, all of them also possess the attribute of Wilaayah.” (Al Malfuz Shareef, Vol. 4)

Who is known as the ‘Afraad’?

Pertaining to the ‘Afraad’, A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmed Raza Muhaddith Barelwi – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that they are from among the most eminent of the Awliya. After the position of ‘Ghous’, the next state is the state of being an ‘Afraad’ or ‘Fardiyat’.

Once someone asked a Saint whether Hadrat Khidr – peace be upon him – was alive. He replied, “Just now I met Hadrat Khidir – peace be upon him. He also mentioned to me and he revealed that he saw a Nur appearing from a certain place in a jungle. He said, ‘As I approached this spot, I noticed that it was a Nur which appeared from a blanket. A person was covered in this blanket and was also resting. I then held his feet and woke this person and said to him, ‘Awake and busy yourself in the Dhikr of Almighty Allah.’ He replied, ‘Busy yourself in your duty and let me be in my state.’ I then said to him, ‘I will make it public that this is a Wali of Almighty Allah.’ He replied, ‘I will make it public that this is Khidr.’ I then asked him to make Du’a for me and he replied, ‘To make Du’a is your right.’ I then mentioned that he had to make Du’a for me. He then made Du’a, ‘Almighty Allah through His Divine Being, increase your (noble) destiny.’

“He then said to me, ‘If I disappear, then do not complain.’ And suddenly he disappeared. Yet, no Wali has the power to disappear in front of my eyes.

“I then continued further and I saw another Nur appearing which also blinded the eyes. As I came near, I saw that it was a female who was covered in a blanket and this Nur appeared from her blanket. I then decided to grab her feet and make her aware when, suddenly, I heard a voice saying to me, ‘O Khidr, be extremely careful.’ This female then opened her eyes and informed me that no one stops until they are stopped (by Divine Order). I then said to her, “Awake and busy yourself in the Dhikr of Almighty Allah’. She replied, ‘Hadrat, busy yourself in your work and allow me to be in my state.’ I then said that I will make it public that this is a Wali of Almighty Allah and she replied, ‘I will make it public that this is Hadrat Khidr.’ I then asked her to make Du’a for me and she said, ‘To make Du’a is your right.’ I then said to her that she had to make Du’a for me. She then made Du’a, ‘‘Almighty Allah through His Divine Being, increase your (noble) destiny.’ She then said to me that if I disappear, then I should not complain. I then said (to myself), that this person will also disappear.

“I then asked her whether she was the wife of the first person I had seen and she replied in the affirmative. She also revealed to me that at this place a female Wali had passed away and they were commanded to perform the burial rights of this female. After saying this, she disappeared from my vision.’”

This Saint then continues, (in other words, the Wali who is narrating this incident) that, “I then asked Hadrat Khidr as to who these people were and he replied, ‘These people are from among the ‘Afraad.’’ I then asked whether these people also have to turn to anyone (among creation) and he replied, ‘Yes, (they have to turn to) Hadrat Sheikh Abdul Qaadir Jilani – may Allah be pleased with him’”.

Is there a Ghous in every generation?

Imam Ahmed Raza – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that, “Without a ‘Ghous’, the heavens and earth will cease to remain firm. They do not even have to make Muraaqibah (or go into spiritual contemplation) because everything is front of them is like a mirror.”

“For every ‘Ghous’, there are two Ministers. The title of a ‘Ghous’ is ‘Abdullah’. The Minister on the left of this ‘Ghous’ is greater in rank than the Minister on the right. This is contrary to the affairs of the world. The reason is that this is the Kingdom of the heart and the heart is also found on the left side of a person.

“The ‘Ghous-e-Akbar’ in all generations is the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. During that era, the Minister on the left was Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and the Minister on the right was Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. The first person in this Ummah to be given this status of ‘Ghous’ was Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and his Minister on the left was Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and his Minister on the right was Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him. After him, this position of ‘Ghous’ was given to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and his Minister on the left was Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – and his Minister on the right was Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him. After him, the position of ‘Ghous’ was given to Hadrat Sayyiduna  ‘Uthman Ghani and his Minister on the left was Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – and his Minister on the right was Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him. After him, the position of ‘Ghous’ was given to Hadrat  Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – and his Minister on the left was Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Hasan and his Minister on the right was Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with them.

“This Silsilah or spiritual governance continued until Hadrat  Sayyiduna Imam Hasan Askari – may Allah be pleased with him – and all those in between were the ‘Ghous’ of their era and also his deputies. This continued until the time of Hadrat Ghousul Azam – may Allah be pleased with him. The great Saint has continued to be on the position of ‘Ghousul Akbar.’ He is also referred to as ‘Ghous-e-Azam’ and ‘Sayyidul Afraad.’ Whoever appears after him until the era of Imam Mehdi – may Allah be pleased with him – will be his deputies. Imam Mehdi – may Allah be pleased with him – will then be given the title of ‘Ghousiyat-e-Kubra.’

“When a ‘Ghous’ passes away, this position is filled by the ‘Imaamain’. The position of the ‘Imaamain’ is then filled with an ‘Awtaad’ from among the four of them. The ‘Awtad’ is then replaced from among the ‘Budalah’. The ‘Budalah’ is replaced by anyone from among the forty ‘Abdaal’. There are also three hundred ‘Nuqabah’ who are replaced by the ‘Awliya’ and these are replaced from among the ordinary Muslims. At times, even a Kaafir is made a Muslim and is placed as a substitute. In this regard, he is considered loftier in status than an ‘Abdaal’. (Al Malfuz Shareef, Vol. 3)

‘Rijaalul Ghaib’ or (People of the Unseen).

“They are not individuals from the Angels but they are from among mankind. They are also found in our Silsilah. However, the ‘Afraad is only under the authority of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and no one else (among the Awliya). This is the reason that he is called a ‘Fard.’ There is none among the Silsilah but in spite of this, all of them have to turn to Hadrat Ghous Paak in any issue and they cannot turn away from this.” (Al Malfuz Shareef, Vol. 4)
