The helpers of Hazrat Isa – peace be upon him – asked him if his Lord can reveal a tray of food from heaven. He said to them, “If you are believers then refrain from asking such questions.” Hearing this the helpers said, “We are not asking for it as a sign but so that we can eat to our satisfaction and we become aware of your truthfulness, and so that our hearts are at peace and we bear testimony. Bani Israel will believe on our testimony and the faith of the believers will get stronger and the infidels will have embrace Imaan.”
Hazrat Isa – peace be upon him – made the following Du’a on the request of his helpers:
اللّٰہُمَّ رَبَّنَاۤ اَنۡزِلْ عَلَیۡنَا مَآئِدَۃً مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ تَکُوۡنُ لَنَا عِیۡدًا لِّاَوَّلِنَا وَاٰخِرِنَا وَ اٰیَۃً مِّنۡکَ ۚ وَارْزُقْنَا وَاَنۡتَ خَیۡرُ الرّٰزِقِیۡنَ ﴿۱۱۴﴾
‘O Allah our Lord, ‘send down to us a tray of food from the heaven so that it may be an occasion of rejoicing for us, for the first and the last of us and a sign from You, and provide for us and You are the best of Providers.
(Al-Maidah 5, Verse 114)
On the Du’a of Hazrat Isa – peace be upon him – Allah Almighty stated, “I will surely descend the tray but whoever from Bani Israel will commit kufr after this I will punish them so bad that none in the whole universe would deserve such a punishment.
Hence, few angels brought down a tray of food from heaven which consisted of 7 fish and 7 bread by the command of Allah Almighty.
(Tafseer Jalalain p. 111)
Hazrat Ibn Abbaas – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated that the angels descended from heaven with bread and meat, and according to other narrations, they brought a huge fried boneless fish with fresh gravy, the salt was placed by its head and vinegar by its tail, and there were different kinds of vegetables around it, and five bread. There was olive oil on top of one bread, honey on top of the second one, butter on the third, cheese on the fourth and pieces of meat on the fifth. Looking at these foods on the tray Sham’oon, the leader of the helpers, said, “O Allah’s soul! Is it from the foods of the world or from the foods of heaven?” He replied, “Neither of them, but Allah Almighty has freshly created these foods for your sake with His Ultimate Power and sent it.”
(Tafseer Jumal Alal Jalalain Vol. 2, p. 304)
Hazrat Isa – peace be upon him – commanded Bani Israel to eat to their satisfaction and to not preserve it for tomorrow but the Bani Israel did preserve some food for tomorrow, and due to this disobedience, Allah’s torment descended upon them and the people that were alright when they went to sleep in the night when they got up the next morning some were turned into pigs and some into monkeys, and then Hazrat Isa – peace be upon him – made Du’a for their death. They all died on the third day and were wiped from the surface of earth. Nobody knows whether the earth swallowed their bodies or what Allah Almighty did to them.
(Tafseer Jumal Vol. 2, p. 304)
Allah Almighty has mentioned this incident in the Surah Maidah, and it is due to this event that the Surah is named Maidah. Maidah means a tray or cloth on which food is served.
Isa son of Maryam submitted, ‘O Allah our Lord, ‘send down to us a tray of food from the heaven so that it may be an occasion of rejoicing for us, for the first and the last of us and a sign from You, and provide for us and You are the best of Providers.
Allah said, ‘I send it down to you, now therefore whoso of you will commit infidelity, then undoubtedly. I shall torment him with a torment wherewith I shall not punish to anyone in the entire Universe.
(Al-Maidah 5, Verse 114-115)
- We should learn from this what a heinous crime it is to disobey Allah’s Messenger, that when the Bani Israel disobeyed him and cheated and saved food from the tray for tomorrow Allah’s punishment had turned them into pigs and monkeys and wiped them off the earth in such a manner that not even a trace of their existence remained.
- Hazrat ‘Isa’s – peace be upon him – words in his Du’a, ‘O Allah our Lord, ‘send down to us a tray of food from the heaven so that it may be an occasion of rejoicing for us’, is a clear evidence that the day a special sign of Allah’s power is manifest it is the Sunnah of Hazrat ‘Isa – peace be upon him – to celebrate and rejoice and that day.
- The night and the day of the Mawlid of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – are indeed the night and day of manifestation of Allah’s Ultimate Power, therefore, to celebrate the Meeladun Nabi and to rejoice on this occasion and to name this day as Eid Meeladun Nabi is definitely in conformity with Quranic teachings. The people who are unhappy about it and keep their houses dark on this day and they do not even sweep their houses, and dress up in untidy and dirty clothes with sour faces, and call the people that celebrate Meelad Bid’atis, we should should leave them in their state, and the Ahlus Sunnah should rejoice and celebrate on this day and arrange the gatherings of Meeladun Nabi reciting Salawaat and Salaam upon him in abundance.
