In Surah Al Ahzab, verse 21, the Qur’an declares:

لَقَدْ کَانَ لَکُمْ فِیۡ رَسُوۡلِ اللہِ اُسْوَۃٌ حَسَنَۃٌ لِّمَنۡ کَانَ یَرْجُوۡا اللہَ وَالْیَوْمَ الْاٰخِرَ وَذَکَرَ اللہَ کَثِیۡرًا ﴿ؕ۲۱﴾

“Undoubtedly, you have the best (example) in the following of the Messenger, for him who hopes for Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.”

The world will end

There is no doubt that the world will come to an end one day. Therefore, we should spend this important time in fulfilling and following the Sunnah of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. We have no idea which action of ours will be accepted in the Divine Court of Allah azza wajal and through this single action, we will receive salvation in the Hereafter. That nation which forgets the behaviour and actions of their Prophet is a nation that will eventually destroy itself. This is the reason that the Qur’an commands us to obey Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and to refrain from those things which he has prohibited.

A Sunnah is such an important act that without it the Fard itself remains incomplete. Even a person who claims to read Salaah cannot fulfil a Fard if he does perform the Sunnah. In Salaah, Qiyam, Ruku and Sujood are Fard, but if one does not perform the Sunnah, such as reading the Tasbeeh in these actions, how will Salaah be complete?

We also see that the Fard acts only become compulsory on a person when he or she becomes mature. But the performance of the Sunnah commences from the time the person is born. When we read the Adhan for the new born, when we shave the head of the new born, when we perform the circumcision, the Haqeeqah, etc. – all these are considered as Sunnah.

This is why we are called Ahle Sunnah!

This is one of the reason that we are called “Ahle Sunnah” and not “Ahle Waajib” or “Ahle Fard”, etc. Even though the performance of the Fard and the reward attached to it is far superior to the reward for the performance of a Sunnah, nonetheless we will see that without the Sunnah being completed, many acts of Fard remain incomplete. When we enter the Masjid to perform the Fard of Salaah, we realise that we have to perform the Sunnah first. If one does not perform Nikah, which is a Sunnah, the child born from the couple would be considered as illegitimate.

Every Sunnah is to be performed, but it is not possible to practise on every Hadith and this is the reason that we are called Ahle Sunnah. As for those who call themselves Ahle Hadith, we like to see them practise upon every Hadith. As a matter of fact, we would appreciate if they spend their entire life trying to practise on every Hadith, in this way, at least they will be so busy that they will not have the time to insult the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah.! Let us give you an example of this.

It is a Hadith Shareef which tells us that the moon was split on two. It is a Hadith Shareef which tells us that the sun retreated its steps as per the command of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam, the stones read the Kalimah, etc. Can such people please practise on this first and when they are finished they can find the time to insult others. Those who accept every Hadith Shareef and practise upon every Sunnah, they are called the “Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah.”

Yes, if one performs any action without practising on the Sunnah, the action would be performed, but the reward for practising upon the Sunnah would not be achieved. If you drink water while sitting, looking at the glass while drinking, and holding it in your right hand, this is a Sunnah. If you read the “Bismillah,” drink in three gulps and after drinking, you say “Al hamdulillah”, then all of these acts would be considered as Sunnah and you will receive manifold reward for this!

In one Hadith Shareef, it is mentioned that, “In whichever time my Sunnah is forgotten, to revive that Sunnah of mine would achieve for the person reward equal to a hundred Martyrs.”

At times, it may seem that the person has omitted a single Sunnah, yet through this action, he may sometimes rob himself the rewards of many other Sunnah. If a person does not have a beard, he will be robbing himself the reward of putting oil in his beard, the reward of combing his beard, and the reward of passing his fingers through his beard. The great Awliya state that, “If a person has a nap during midday (Qaylulah) with the intention that this is a Sunnah, then this is considered as more rewarding than performing a thousand Nawafil. If a person eats food on the day of Eid, then it is considered as more rewarding than keeping a thousand Nawafil fast.”

When a child is born, the child cries. The doctor thinks that it is because the child is hungry, yet, we know that a human has his entire life to eat. Actually, the child is not crying for food. It is crying because it wishes to listen to the Adhan which it used to listen to in the world from where it came!

There is no doubt that following the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam is the ultimate path of salvation. Hadrat Sheikh Muhiyudeen states that, “I have managed to practise on the Sunnah of nearly all the Sunnah of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam except one and that is, if I had a daughter, I would have allowed her to marry a beloved friend of mine.” Such is the importance that the great Awliya placed on the performance of the Sunnah.

Hadrat Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates, “I was once in the company of a few people when they entered the public bath without any clothes. However, as per the Sunnah of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam, I tied a cloth around my waist so that the lower part of my body could be concealed. During the night, I heard someone declare, ‘O Ahmed! Allah azza wajal has pardoned your sins and will make you an Imam among people because of your practise upon one single Sunnah.’ When I asked who the person was who had declared these words, the reply came that it was Jibra’eel Ameen Alayhis Salaam.”

The miracle of the Prophet’s Cloth

In the “Masnawi Shareef”, an unusual story is mentioned about the amazing miracle of a cloth which belonged to the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam.

Once, Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas Radi Allahu ‘Anhu invited a few Ashaab to partake in a meal. When they placed the cloth on the floor, they noticed that it was a little soiled. Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas Radi Allahu ‘Anhu then instructed his female servant to place this in the hot burning fire. His two guests were extremely surprised and expected the cloth to burn. However, they were surprised that a few moments later the cloth was removed from the fire absolutely clean with no signs of it being burnt!

If this is the status of a piece of cloth which had a connection with the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam imagine the state of that person who is connected to the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam as an Ummati? How can this sincere person burn in the Fire of Hell? Today, we are looking for our respect. How can one gain respect in the eyes of someone when one deliberately turns away from the Sunnah of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and tries to impersonate a Western person.

Even if one does impersonate such modern people, there is a possibility that people may not even want to look at you, however, if one tries to emulate the Sunnah of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam, the whole world will take notice of you. Not only this, but by following the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam, one will also become a beloved slave of Allah azza wajal. We have seen in the past that when Muslims just wore a topi and a small beard, people used to move away from the road allowing the Muslims to walk past. Today, while we strive to impersonate the Western world we have become the target of everyone.

O Muslims! Where are you going today? Instead of reading the Qur’an you are busy reading novels and other un-Islamic literature which is filled with lies and deceit. This is that Qur’an which has stories of people who lived in the past, it has laws, Knowledge of the Unseen and many other interesting points. Instead of reading the “Readers Digest,” read the Ahadith of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and create love for these words. Instead of using your fingers to place dice, use it to read the Tasbeeh.

There are certain Saints who spent their entire life not eating a certain type of food or fruit because they were not sure whether it was Sunnah or not. They never even placed their hands on that fruit. We speak of these examples, but our behaviour is completely opposite.

Hadrat Moulana Jalaaludeen Rumi Radi Allahu ‘Anhu speaks about a person who opened a special window in his house. A pious person then asked him the purpose for this, and he replied that he wished to get the benefit of the cool breeze. The Saint replied, “If only you had made the intention that you wished to hear the sweet sound of the Adhan. In that way, you would have received two benefits. You would have received the reward for making a noble intention and side by side, you would have also benefited from the cool breeze.”

In the present time, many Muslims are more impressed by Science rather than actual Islamic teachings. Before doing anything, they look at the wordily benefits first. We will explain a few things in this regard. However, before doing so, there are a few words of caution. It must be borne in mind that the miracles of the Prophets in their specific times were specific to that period. Even though some of these miracles seems rare to us, but because a Divine Message had to be authenticated, hence these types of miracles appeared. In the time of Nabi ‘Isa Alayhis Salaam the physicians of that period felt that they could cure anything and boasted about their powers, therefore Allah azza wajal blessed Nabi ‘Isa Alayhis Salaam with the power of healing as is well known. In the face of amazing miracles, the physicians who boasted about their healing powers became speechless.

In the time of Nabi Moosa Alayhis Salaam, magic played an important role in people’s life. When the magicians of the period transformed their little sticks into snakes through magic, Allah azza wajal blessed Nabi Moosa Alayhis Salaam with the power of turning his walking stick into a King Cobra. This instantly made these magicians speechless. In the time of Nabi Sulayman Alayhis Salaam, he was able to carry his throne in the air. In the time of Nabi Saleh Alayhis Salaam, people boasted about their powers of creating dwellings made from rock faces. Allah azza wajal blessed him by creating a camel from the rock face. This left their top engineers and builders speechless.

In the time of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam, Science played an important part in people’s lives and some of his teachings and advises left people speechless until the present day. Science has now admitted that everything was created from water and this was told nearly fourteen hundreds ago by the Qur’an. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam proved that he could listen to the sound of the Divine Pen. Hadrat ‘Umar Radi Allahu ‘Anhu proved that his voice could travel hundreds of miles away and that he could also see hundreds of miles away. This is only recently being proven by science through the invention of radio, TV and other telecommunications.

The system of being clean in Islam

Describing the people who performed Salaah in Masjid-e-Quba, the Qur’an describes them as people who like being immensely clean and pure. When it was questioned as to how they kept themselves clean, they answered that after releasing themselves, they used both mud and water to clean themselves. Even modern scientist admit that only using toilet paper and no water can create sores in the private area which can only be treated through an operation. Those who use water on the other hand are saved from this calamity. There are also many other diseases than can appear if one only uses toilet paper and no water. This is the lesson that Islam has given to the world as far as personal hygiene is concerned.

Washing the exterior of the body regularly

Those parts of the body, such as the mouth and nose, which are open to the elements gather a fair amount of germs. However, a Muslim is fortunate that five times a day, he is given the opportunity to wash and rinse these areas so he is able to save himself from these various types of germs.

The same type of precaution is displayed after washing the hands and before eating. One is recommended not to dry the hands before eating because maybe there could be germs in the towel or cloth. The same has been advised about not blowing in any liquid which one intends to drink so that harmful carbon dioxide does not enter the water. The advantage of using the Miswaak is only been recently discovered.

All these are various ways that a person can stay healthy and be able to protect himself from various harmful germs. This is the only religion which has advised its followers on personal hygiene. This clearly proves that Islam is a religion which is not man-made but a religion which has been Divinely sent.

To eat less

To consume less food protects a person from numerous diseases. This is the lesson of Islam. The Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has advised us that we should keep one part of the stomach for food, one part for water and one part for air. Sadly, most Muslims are in the habit of overeating. When questioned they tell you that water will find its own space in the stomach!

The doctor could find no patients to treat!

Shaikh Sa’di Alaihir Rahmah in the “Ghulistan” narrates a story that once a certain King sent a special physician to the blessed court of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam so that if any of his followers became sick, this physician would be able to treat them. However, this physician stayed for one month in Madina Shareef but received no patients. After a while, he decided to leave. He also inquired as to why the people in this area did not become sick. He was told that the people are following the advice of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and that they were in the habit of only eating when they were hungry and before their hunger was fully satisfied, they used to refrain from eating.

Most of the diseases caused in the present time is caused by excessive eating. The blood vessels of the heart also begin to constrict thereby creating high blood pressure, then heart failure and even death. If only people would have practised on the simple Sunnah of eating less, all of this trouble would have been avoided. Eating less also creates Nur outwardly and internally.

One should also take precaution in not over-eating beef because even recently it has been found that there is a special worm which is found in beef which can create a certain illness. Hundreds of years before, even before anyone knew about this, the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam advised us about this even naming the worm in Arabic as “Su’ul Hazam”. However, it is permissible to eat meat, though there are certain parts which have been recommended such as the neck and all those parts which have less fat. Those parts which have more fat are considered as dangerous to one’s health. This is the reason that in Jannah there will only be meat of birds available for people.

The Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam also liked fish and had this cooked in oil. In recent times, experts have also claimed that there are many advantages in this. For pain in the chest, the consumption of olive oil has been recommended. A few years back, the same people who used to distance themselves from oil, are today the “experts” are advising people about the advantages of oil!

Those animals which have been prohibited in Islam are also animals which carry dangerous diseases for humans. The reason we are not allowed to eat an animal which has not been slaughtered Islamically is because there is still a lot of blood inside the dead animal and due to this many illnesses can be caused.

The eating of pigs is something which is enjoyed by non-Muslims who accuse Islam of unnecessarily prohibiting the eating of pork. Yet, even their own experts have discovered that in pigs there are two worms which can create a major health problem. One of them can create epilepsy and the other can create inflammation within the brain itself. It is also one of the greatest reasons for obesity.

We need not explain the damages caused by alcohol as the majority of people are already fully aware of its harmful effects. Those items which Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has described as harmful will always be harmful. He has also advised on the goodness of honey. Until today, honey is used in various medications and is still considered as a valuable item. It creates strength in the blood, etc.

Recently in Lebanon, there was a sick patient who was in hospital for nearly three months. One day, a friend of his from Egypt brought him some honey as a gift and this person began to drink this honey. When his physician checked his blood, he was shocked because they were convinced that this was not the blood of the same patient. After testing and re-testing and even checking the machine that was used, they finally concluded that a miracle had occurred. When they asked the patient about this, he picked up the Qur’an explained to them Surah Nahl!

The blessed heart of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam!

Today, everyone is amazed at the so-called advancement of Science, nonetheless, as Muslims do we also remember the incident in which the blessed heart of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam was removed while he was only four years old? It was then dipped in the water of Zam Zam and all this was happening while he was watching the entire incident unfold in front of him! There was no latest hardware or software available at that time and no artificial heart that was put. Today, which Modern Science is able to carry out an operation of this nature?

High fever and other ailments

In the old days, people used to treat high fever with simply water. Science in that period objected to this type of treatment and informed people that water should not be used on a person suffering from high fever. Today, we find that the same treatment is used to treat high fever, however the only difference is that they call it a fancy name like “ice packs”.

Once the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam informed a person with high fever to dip himself in water. He said that high fever is like fire and fire is extinguished by water. In the present time, there are certain things which we see and cannot comprehend. As the time passes, we are beginning to see the Prophetic miracle of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam slowly unfolding.

The same was mentioned about the effects of dates and melon. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam informed us that dates was considered as a food item which contained heat and melon was something which was cold and the effects of both could be eliminated by each other. Many modern scientist are only now beginning to realise the miracles of Islam. Some admit it openly, while others grudgingly.

The danger of stopping half way while urinating!

Once a Bedouin entered the Masjid and began to urinate. The blessed Ashaab wanted to stop him and reprimand him. However, the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam stopped them from doing this. When the person had completed urinating, then only did the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam advise him about the respect of a Masjid. This incident is mentioned in most of the six authentic books of Ahadith. It proves two very important points:

  1. The immense kindness and mercy of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. He did not want this person to be harmed. Secondly, he understood that at times, these types of acts cannot be restricted as they are acts which are physiological in nature which is difficult for someone to restrict.
  2. The Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam was emphasising to everyone present and in the future of the medical dangers associated in stopping urine half way while urinating. Even today, medical experts inform us that if we stop urinating half way, then there is great danger to the kidney. It may seem like an incident which looks common to everyone, yet it was an act which had a profound medical implication.

Sadly, instead of Muslims looking at these amazing examples given to us by the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam they look at non-Muslim experts for medical answers. The message of the Qur’an is that this religion “is a Divine Favour” on people. We forget this and look elsewhere for our answers. When we know that this is a Divine Favour, then we should seriously make an effort to analyse the various miracles and even medical answers which are to be found in Islam!

Once a medical doctor informed me that when a person goes to toilet he should raise his right ankle slightly and place his left foot firmly on the ground when releasing himself. He said that he read this in certain books which describes certain Islamic behaviour. However, he only realised the benefit of this when he attended medical college and examined the intestinal system of a human being. He concluded that this is exactly how the digestion system was created. He understood that if someone released himself in this manner, he would certainly be able to clean himself properly and at the same all the impurities inside him will be expelled from his body more easily.

People today are in the habit of consuming various types of “opening” liquids. They are in the habit of spending huge amounts of money in buying various types of machines to keep their physical body in good shape. Yet, we must understand that the simple manner of releasing oneself properly in the toilet actually helps in removing most of the medical problems we may encounter in the future had we not released ourselves properly in the toilet. This is such a simple advice and Islam has given us an answer to something as simple as this. Yet, in spite of this, we spend huge amounts of money looking for expensive medication thinking that this is the “actual miracle.”

Cure of a deep cut!

Only recently have people seen the benefits of stopping the flow of blood from a deep wound or cut. In the past, people used to use a simple method of placing some ashes on this. This was even done after the Battle of Uhud and administered by Sayyidah Fatimah Zahra Radi Allahu ‘Anha when Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam suffered a deep wound.

Salaah and the medical benefit

Besides having spiritual benefit, Salaah is also mentioned to have tremendous medical benefits. Doctors recommend that a person must continuously go up and down to exercise various parts of his anatomy on a daily basis. Even though some people might say that the exercises are quiet insignificant, yet, if the same Salaah is performed properly keeping in mind all the acts of Sunnah and Mustahab, then the physical body of a person would certainly benefit greatly from this exercise.

The performance of Salaah in a very lazy manner has been compared to the Salaah of a hypocrite. In other words, there is no spiritual or medical benefit achieved from this type of Salaah.

If we examine the different number of rak’ah in each Salaah, that too will also make us understand the benefits of exercise. We all know that this burns fat which results in a healthier body. In the morning, because the body is still hungry, we are only instructed to perform 4 rak’ah of Salaah in Fajr. During midday, since we have just eaten lunch, we are instructed to perform 12 rak’ah of Salaah as in Zohr. At night, since we have eaten supper and because we are going to sleep, more exercise is required, hence we are commanded to perform 17 rak’ah of Salaah. During Ramadan, since people are in the habit of eating excessively during Iftaar, 20 rak’ah has been recommended.

This is the miracle of Islam. As we walk about we find that people are always exercising and walking, some are on bicycles, and some are in groups running about. All of them are trying to keep their bodies lean and trim, and as Muslims, we do this in our own homes, yet ignore the benefits of it.

Look at the military style manner of how our bodies are programmed in Salaah which in itself gives great medical benefit to us. When a person stands, he has to stand upright. His toes need to point straight. His hands need to be tied firmly either below or above the navel. His fingers need to be spread around his wrist in a certain manner. When he goes into Ruku, he has to make sure that his back is straight which further exercises his various joints. He has to put pressure on his knees which not only exercises his knees but his back, his legs, his neck, etc.

When he goes into Sajdah, he has to make sure that his face is completely on the ground. His elbows remain above the ground. When he sits in Salaah, his one feet is placed in a certain position while the other is in another position. His hands on his thighs are placed in a certain manner. When he makes Salaam, his neck muscle are also exercised.

In this manner, he has completed his worship of Allah azza wajal and side by side, his body has also been exercised! Which religion is able to compare with Islam where both the spiritual need and the physical needs of a person is enacted all at once?

Medical benefit of Congregational Salaah

When we are in Congregational Salaah, we are advised to make sure that the lines are straight and that everyone’s shoulder is touching each other and the feet of everyone is also in one straight line. We have also been told that if this is not straight then the heart becomes misled. Until today, people have never understood the significance of this. But certain experts have concluded that external behaviour plays a vital role in the person’s internal set-up. In other words, whatever he does outside or enacts physically outside, has an impact on him internally.

The medical benefit of Circumcision

Those people or nations who do not perform circumcision are now beginning to realise the medical benefit of circumcision. This is one of the greatest causes of medical illness because dirt which collects in this sensitive area gives rise to further medical risks. This is the reason that recently, even non-Muslim Governments have been advising its citizens to perform circumcision after realizing its medical benefits.

Islam is a religion which nearly fourteen hundred years ago has strictly instructed its followers to circumcise themselves. In reality, if we carefully look at Islam, we will have to conclude that the modern world is still steeped in the dark-age while Islam is the only modern way of life possible. After all, what do people term as “modern”? It is the concept of people walking around half-naked. It is the concept of children speaking to their elders how they wish to speak to and if reprimanded, then that child has the “legal” right to take their guardian to Court! It is the concept of males and females mixing freely saying that this the “democratic” way of like. Is this truly modern? This is exactly what used to be the behaviour of people in the days of ignorance. It is Islam which gave back to mankind its once forgotten respect and esteem.

A fly in one’s drink

Until recent time, people have been mocking the advice of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam in this regard. They say mockingly, “what type of a Prophet is this who says that when a fly falls into one’s drink, then one should dip it further in and after removing the fly, one should drink the same drink”. Nonetheless, now medical science has proven that when a fly falls into a drink, only one wing remains in the drink while the other wing remains outside. This one wing inside the drink is the wing which contains germs and disease. However, when the other wing is dipped in, then this becomes like an antibiotic and is able to destroy all the diseases which was carried by the first wing.

Hidden meaning in this Prophetic message!

This is what we mean when we say that Islam is actually the modern religion and all other ways of life look arcane and prehistoric. At the same time, we must also understand that the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam was not only a Prophet for the rich, but also a Prophet for the poor. The Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam understood fully well that there would be very poor people in his Ummah and there might even be people who have the opportunity of drinking milk only once in a year! If the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam had advised that as soon as a fly fell into this cup of milk and one had to throw it away, many people would die of regret. Hence, the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam gave advice of this nature that if in the event of this actually happening and one needed to have this drink, then this was the medical technique that one could adopt.

Remember also, that it is not necessary for you drink this cup of milk or water. If you feel uncomfortable, then you can also throw the liquid away. Islam has not forced you to drink this milk. However, if you wish to continue drinking, then you should continue in the manner as explained by Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. This clearly proves the immense concern and mercy that the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has for his Ummah.

Even a person like Gandhi used to praise the ethics and behaviour found in Islam. Gandhi used to also adopt the method of Islam in his preaching, such as wearing simple clothes and serving people. These are the methods which can create world peace and security while people spend millions of dollars trying to achieve peace through peace symposiums. This money could be better spent in feeding the poor and building hospitals to take care of the sick.

The Islamic method of eating

It is sad to see the state of Muslims today when it comes to eating. Before this, they used to stand and eat and now some of them have become so “modern” that while they are walking, they are also eating. Even in certain functions, some look at the food being served as if they have never seen food before. The first thing that people look for is extra meat and the best part of the dish. When they have this opportunity, instead of waiting for others, they prefer to top up their plates while they only wind up eating a small portion of this and the rest is wasted. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has even advised us not to rush forward for Salaah insisting that we should maintain our dignity and status.  What must be the Beloved Nabi’s Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam opinion of us when he sees the manner in which we rush towards food?

At the start, there only used to be spoons on the table. These days, there are all types of utensils found on the table. People sometimes even end up arguing about these unnecessary items on the table. What happens if the food is hot and you are eating with a spoon, will you not be able to discern this before eating? This is one single benefit of eating with your fingers.

Initially, doctors were of the opinion that licking the fingers after eating was an unhealthy habit, nevertheless, today, most of them are of the opinion that the fingers itself contains enzymes that helps in digestion! This is the miracle of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam which people are only now appreciating! Once Hadrat Qiblah Syed Abul Barakaat Radi Allahu ‘Anhu saw a person eating with a spoon and asked him the reason for this. He replied, “So that the hands does not become dirty or spoilt.” The great Saint replied, “If the hand becomes dirty, you can wash and rinse it, but if the heart becomes dirty how will you be able to clean it?”

Once a certain King from Afghanistan visited Pakistan. He and was invited to a special banquet by the Government. This King began to eat with his fingers while the other diplomats were passing their usual comments about what type of a King this was. He then looked at them and said, “The spoon and fork you are using may have entered the mouths of many other people, but my fingers has only entered my mouth! Therefore, the joke is actually on you and not on me”.

Once, Hadrat Sayyiduna Huzayfah bin Yamaan Radi Allahu ‘Anhu visited a certain region in Iran as a representative of the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. The ruler of that area invited him to eat with them. While Hadrat Sayyiduna Huzayfah bin Yamaan Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was eating, a piece of food fell on the ground. He picked it up, cleaned it and then ate it. Those around him looked at him with great disdain. Hadrat Sayyiduna Huzayfah bin Yamaan Radi Allahu ‘Anhu then got extremely angry and said, “I cannot leave the Sunnah of my Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam just because of your fancy mansion and dwelling.”

The Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam also advised us to read the “Bismillah” before eating and to eat from that part of the plate which was in front of us. That plate which is cleaned after eating without any leftovers, that plate makes Du’a for the person’s salvation. This is the manner in which the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has educated his Ummah about every aspect of their lives. This is only one of the reasons that the Beloved Nabi Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has been described as most merciful and most ardently concerned about his Ummah even more than our own parents!

In the present era, Muslims go out of the way in functions such as weddings, parties, etc. Sometimes if there isn’t a seven course meal on the table, others consider it an insult.
