When Hazrat Imam Hasan and Husain – may Allah be pleased with Them – fell ill at a young age Hazrat Ali, Hazrat Fatimah and Hazrat Fiddah – may Allah be pleased with Them – vowed to keep three fasts for their health. Allah Almighty granted both the princes Shifa.
When the time came to keep the fasts of the vow all of them made intention of fasting. Hazrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with Him – bought three bowls of barley from a jew. They cooked each bowl on three days but when the time of Iftar came and the bread was placed before all of the three fasting persons, a poor man came the first day, an orphan the second day, and a prisoner the third day, they all asked for bread and they gave them all the food to the ones that asked and made iftar only with water and then fasted the next day. Hazrat Fiddah was the servant at Hazrat Fatimah’s – may Allah be pleased with Her, – house.

Allah Almighty has mentioned the story of the daughter of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – Hazrat Fatimah’s – may Allah be pleased with Her – house in the following words of the Holy Quran:
وَ یُطْعِمُوۡنَ الطَّعَامَ عَلٰی حُبِّہٖ مِسْکِیۡنًا وَّ یَتِیۡمًا وَّ اَسِیۡرًا ﴿۸﴾
And they feed, for love of Him, the poor, the orphan and the prisoner.
اِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُکُمْ لِوَجْہِ اللہِ لَا نُرِیۡدُ مِنۡکُمْ جَزَآءً وَّ لَا شُکُوۡرًا ﴿۹﴾
They say to them, ‘We feed you for Allah is pleasure only. We desire no recompense or thanks from you’.
(Al-Dahr 76, Verse 8-9)
Lesson:
This story unfolds the exemplary and wonderful situation of Ahlebait’s generosity, SubhaanAllah!
It is not an ordinary thing to keep yourself hungry but give the bread to whoever needy came to ask.
Someone has said it very beautifully:
بھوکے رہتے تھے خود اوروں کو کھلا دیتے تھے
کتنے صابر تھے محمد ﷺ کے گھرانے والے
Although they themselves remained hungry but fed the others
How patient the family of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – was!
