اَسْعَدَکَ اللّٰہُ وَاِیَّایَ فِیْ الدَّارَیْنِ
Names are an important part of one’s personality through which one is called, known and remembered, and they also represent our traditional values. If one’s name is good one’s character is also more likely to match the standards of one’s name. People begin to worry about keeping their babies’ names right after their birth and many people do it even before the child is born. It’s the fathers’ responsibility to keep good names for their children, for it’s the first gift he could give to the child which he or she values throughout his or her entire life. The beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – states:
اَوَّلُ مَا یُنْحِلُ الرَّجُلُ وَلَدَہٗ اِسْمُہٗ فَلْیُحْسِنْ اِسْمَہٗ
The first gift a man could give his child is its name, so keep it a good one.
When a child is born in our society people come and congratulate the parents and thereafter, the first thing they ask is the child’s name. Sometimes the parents are seen asking the relatives and friends to suggest a name for the child.
Allah-willing, we will learn in this piece of writing the Islamic perspective of keeping names from the reliable and authentic Islamic sources.
Time of Name-keeping
Hazrat Sayyiduna ‘Amr Ibn Shu’aib – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – commanded to keep the children’s name on the seventh day from the day of birth.
(Tirmidhi Hadeeth No. 2841)
It’s best to perform the Aqeeqah of the newborn on the seventh day and then the name should be kept on the very day, although it’s permissible to keep the name even before the Aqeeqah.
(Nuzhatul Qaari Vol. 5, p. 430)
Who Should Keep the Name
It’s basically the father’s responsibility to keep the child’s name, for the Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – stated:
“The right a child has over its father is that he must keep him a good name and teach good manners.”
(Shu’abul Imaan Hadeeth No. 8658)
Hazrat Allamah Abdur Ra’oof Manaawi – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – comments on the Hadeeth as follows:
“The wisdom behind the command of keeping good names is that one’s actions should be as good as one’s name, for the names act as a body for one’s personality and represent one’s personality. Allah’s ultimate wisdom demands and ordains that there should be a connection between one’s name and his actions. The names have an impact on one’s personality and vice-versa.”
(Faid Al-Qadeer, Under the Hadeeth No. 3745)
Defining Good Names
Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Na’eemi – may Allah be pleased with him – comments on the Hadeeth as follows:
“Good names are those that are not meaningless and they also should not have a sense of boastfulness and arrogance neither should they contain bad meanings. It’s best to keep names after the names of the Prophets – peace be upon them, the Companions of the Holy Prophet or His Household – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, his Household and all his Companions; like, Ibraheem, Isma’eel, ‘Uthmaan, ‘Ali, Husain, Hasan etc. and women’s names; like, Aasiyah, Fatimah, ‘Ayeshah etc. Whoever keeps his son’s name Muhammad will be, Allah-willing, forgiven in the hereafter as well as its blessings will be manifest in the world.”
(Mi’atul Manajeeh Vol. 5, p. 30)
The Quality of Names
Huzoor Sadrush Shariah Allamah Amjad Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – writes:
“The Scholars have difference of opinion regarding whether or not such names are to be kept that are neither mentioned in the Quran nor Hadeeth nor the names that are not commonly used among Muslims. It’s preferable not to keep such names.”
(Bahaare Shariat Vol. 3, p. 603)
The Holy Quran warns against calling or keeping bad names:
وَلَا تَلْمِزُوۡۤا اَنۡفُسَکُمْ وَلَا تَنَابَزُوۡا بِالْاَلْقٰبِ ؕ بِئْسَ الِاسْمُ الْفُسُوۡقُ بَعْدَ الْاِیۡمٰنِ
And do not taunt one another and nor keep one another bad names. What a bad name is, to be called a “disobedient” after being a Muslim.
(Al-Hujraat 49, Verse 11)
Hazrat Allamah Sadrul Afaadil Sayyid Na’eemuddeen Muradabadi – may Allah be pleased with him – states in the Tafseer of this verse:
“i.e. By the name which they may dislike.”
Alien Names
Sometimes, people suggest or even make up such names that none within the family must have nor should there be anyone else by that name in the whole district, so that when people hear the name they are bound to say, “Wow! What a name! I’m hearing this for the first time.” As a result of which the person feels boastful. What a shame!
The Formation of One’s Name
It’s better not to keep a two or three-words name; e.g. Aarif Junaid or Muhammad Ali Husain unless there is a need because these types of names were not customary in the time of our pious predecessors but they were rather simple one-word names.
(Fatawa Razvia Vol. 24, p. 669)
Since, nowadays, there is a need, for the surnames play a vital role in our communities we live in, it’s appropriate to keep a name comprising of two or three words.
Masculine and Feminine Gender of the Names
Sometimes, the masculine names are given to the females and vice-versa. The names should be such that anyone should be able to distinguish the moment they hear it whether it’s a male or female.
Non-Muslim Names
“Under no circumstances, a Muslim must keep the names of their children like that of non-Muslims, for it creates a sense of similarity to the infidels and it’s not permissible to keep such names.”
(Fatawa Razvia Vol. 24, p. 663)
Horrible Consequences of Keeping Bad Names
Hazrat Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – once asked someone his name. He replied, “My name is Hamrah (meaning, Spark).” He asked, “Whose son are you?” He replied, “Ibn Shihaab (Son of hot coal).” He asked, “Where do you live?” He replied, “Huraqah (Heat).” He asked, “Where is it situated?” He replied, Harratun Naar (Heat of fire).” He asked, “Under the jurisdiction of which place?” He replied, “Dhaat Lazaa (Volcanic dwelling).” He said, “Go and find out about your people; all got burnt.” It happened exactly as Hazrat Umar predicted.
(Muwatta Imam Malik Hadeeth No. 1871)
Extracting Names from the Holy Quran
Some people like to keep Quranic names for their newborn which is excellent but one needs to be careful that only the names of Prophets – peace be upon them – and the pious personalities and noble things mentioned in the Quran are worth keeping but sometimes, such names are chosen from the Quran which are not befitting when naming someone according to their meanings; for example, there was a woman who could read Quran and when she gave birth to three daughters, she kept Quranic names for them and all the names she extracted were from Surah Kauthar:
1. Kauthar (One with a great virtues)
2. Wanhar (And offer sacrifice)
3. Abtar (One deprived of goodness)
The first is excellent, the second one is okay to some extent but what about the third one? In such cases where one does not have sufficient knowledge to keep names must consult and seek the advice of an ‘Aalim, Allah-willing the result will be terrific with no regrets.
There was another incident where someone kept their daughter’s name Mudhabdhibeen (meaning, Ones who are confused between Imaan and kufr [Khazaainul
Irfaan]). Someone asked, “Why did you keep such a name?” The response was, “It’s from the Quran.”
Due to ignorance, some people even keep their children’s name Zaaniyah (Adulteress) and present Quran as a witness. What a shameful way of keeping names! There are words in the Quran that no one will like as their names; such as, Himaar (donkey), Kalb (dog), Khinzeer (swine), Baqarah (cow), Fir’aun (Pharaoh, a kaafir), Haamaan (a kaafir), Abu Lahab (a kaafir) etc. No one with sound mind will agree to these names after knowing their meanings. May Allah Almighty guide us on Haq. Ameen!
Naming after Prophets’ – peace be upon them – Names
The Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – stated:
“Keep names after the names of the Prophets – peace be upon them – and the most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur Rahmaan, and the true names; Haarith and Hamaam while Harb and Murrah are bad names.”
(Abu Dawood Hadeeth No. 495)
Imam Manaawi commented on the Hadeeth as follows:
“The reason why we are encouraged to keep names after Prophets’ – peace be upon them – names is that they are the leaders of the human civilization, have best of ethics, their deeds are best of deeds and their names are best of names, therefore keeping name after their names is a means of dignity and blessing.”
(Faid Al-Qadeer Vol. 3, p. 324)
Electing the One with Good Name
The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – commanded to bring a she-camel for milking and said, “Who will milk it?” A person replied, “I will.” He asked, “What’s your name?” He replied, “Murrah (Bitter)” He said, “Sit down.” Another man stood up. He asked about his name. He replied, “Jamrah (Hot coal).” He told him to sit down as well, and then Hazrat Ya’eesh Ghifaari – may Allah be pleased with them – stood up, and mentioned his name upon request and He replied, “Ya’eesh (Survivor).” He said, “You may milk the camel.”
(Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabeer Vol. 22, Hadeeth No. 710)
Naming after the Names of the Pious People
It’s narrated from Hazrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – as follows:
مَا مِنْ قَوْمٍ یَکُوْنُ فِیْھِمْ رَجُلٌ صَالِحٌ فَیَمُوْتُ فَیَخْلُفُ فِیْھِمْ بِمَوْلُوْدٍ فَیُسَمُوْنَہٗ بِاِسْمِہٖ اِلَّا خَلَفَھُمُ اللّٰہُ بِالْحُسْنٰی
When a pious man of a nation passes away then a child is born after his death and he is named after the name of that pious predecessor; Allah Almighty creates those very qualities in that child for them due to keeping that blessed name.”
(Ibn Asaakir 43, 44)
Hazrat ‘Ayeshah – may Allah be pleased with her – narrated that the Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – stated:
“Keep names after the names of the pious people and ask good people for help when in need.”
(Al-Musnad Al-Firdous Hadeeth No. 2329)
Alahazrat – may Allah be pleased with him – states:
“The recommendation of keeping names after Allah’s beloveds; the names of the Prophets – peace be upon them – and Awliya, comes from from Hadeeth.”
(Fatawa Razvia Vol. 24, p. 685)
