Salaatut Tasbeeh is a means of limitless virtues.  Some great scholars have even mentioned that none shall abandon it but one who is careless of Islam.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him said to Hazrat Abbaas – may Allah be pleased with him, “Should I not grant you something?  Should I not arrange for your forgiveness?  Should I not do you a favour, O my uncle?  There are ten things when you practice them Allah Almighty will forgive all your past and present, new and old sins whether committed intentionally or unintentionally, whether revealed or kept hidden.”  He taught him the method of Salaatut Tasbeeh, and then said, “Read it once a day if possible and if not then once on every Friday, and if you fail to do so then once a month, and if you cannot make it then once a year and if that you cannot do then once in the whole lifetime.”

(Al-Sunan Al-Kubra Lil Baihaqi Hadeeth No. 5113, Al-Mustadrak Ala Al-Saheehain Hadeeth No. 1192, Sunan Abi Dawood Hadeeth No. 1299, Sunan Ibn Majah Hadeeth No. 1387)

Hazrat Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Na’eemi – may Allah be pleased with him – commented on the Hadeeth as follows:

“Some people say that the Hadeeth of Salaatut Tasbeeh is fabricated which is wrong because Hazrat Ibn Khuzaimah and Imam Haakim said that it’s Sahih and Imam Ibn Hajar Asqalaani said it’s Hassan.  Allamah Ibn Jawzy has regarded the Hadeeth as weak because he did not research it.”

(Mir’aat Al-Manajeeh Vol. 2, p. 306)

The Hanafi Method of Salaatut Tasbeeh:

Its method according to the Hanafi School of Thought is the one mentioned in Tirmidhi Shareef from Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him.  He states:

Atfer saying Takbeer (Tahreema):

Recite (once):

And then recite:

15 times, thereafter:

And an additional Surah followed by the Tasbeeh 10 times:

And then go into Rukoo’ and recite 10 times:

Get up from Rukoo’ and recite 10 times:

after:

And

Then go into Sajdah and recite 10 times:

And recite 10 times also in the second Sajdah:

Perform four Rak’ats in this manner with the above Tasbeeh 75 times in each which equal to total 300 Tasbeehs.  The Tasbeehs of Rukoo’ and Sajdahs should be recited after:

And

(Tirmidhi Hadeeth No. 481, Sharhus Sunnah, Vol. 1, p. 244, Ghunyah etc.)

  • When Hazrat Ibn ‘Abbaas – may Allah be pleased with him – was asked as to which Surahs one should recite in this Salah, he replied:

(Radd Al-Muhtaar Vol. 2, p. 571)

  • It’s narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbaas – may Allah be pleased with him – to recite the following Du’a after Tashahhud, before Salaam:

(Radd Al-Muhtaar Vol. 2, p. 572)

The Shafe’i Method of performing Salaatut Tasbeeh:

Its method according to the Shafe’i School of Thought is as follows:

Salaatut Tasbeeh is four Rak’ats and the following Tasbeeh is recited 300 times:

But the following part is also added to the Tasbeeh by Imam Ghazaali – may Allah be pleased with him – in Ihya Uloomid Deen:

Read the following Du’a in the first Rak’at:

and then recite Surah Fatiha:

followed by Surah Takaathur or any other Surah:

Thereafter recite the following Tasbeeh 15 times:

10 times in Ruku’ after Tasbeeh:

Read the following whilst standing after the Ruku’:

Followed by 10 times:

Then recite 10-10 times in both Sajdah after Tasbeeh:

Read the following 10 times whilst sitting between two Sajdahs:

And also after both Sajdahs, recite 10 times before getting up for the second Rak’at:

By now, you would have recited 75 times in the first Rak’at.  Do the same in the second Rakat as instructed in the abovementioned order except that one needs to recite the Tasbeeh that was supposed to be recited between two Sajdahs after both Sajdahs of the second and fourth Rak’at before Tashahhud (Al-Tahiyyaat) according to the method of Hazrat Ibn Abbaas – may Allah be pleased with him.

Recite Surah ‘Asr in the second Rakat:

Surah Kaafiroon in the 3rd Rakaat:

And Surah Ikhlaas in the 4th Rakaat after Surah Fatiha:

The Tasbeehs of Rukoo’ and Sajdahs should be recited after:

And

(Shafe’i Bahishti Zewar Vol. 1, p. 193-194)

Ruling:

There is no specific time prescribed for Salatut Tasbeeh but if one performs Salaatut Tasbeeh during the day then all four Rak’ats should be merged into a single set of four (as in Esha Salah) with one Salaam but if one reads Ralatut Tasbeeh during the night then it should be broken down into two sets of two Rak’ats with two Salaams.

It is Sunnah to perform Salaatut Tasbeeh once everyday or more times (depending on one’s dedication and enthusiasm) but if it’s not manageable then once a week on Fridays and if one cannot make it once a week then once a month, if not then once a year but one must at least perform it once in his or her lifetime.

Imam Tabrani mentioned after mentioning the method of Salaatut Tasbeen in his Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat that indeed the Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – used to recite the following Du’a of Salaatut Tasbeeh after Tashahhud, before Salaam:

(Kitaab Al-Qaul Al-Taam of Ibn ‘Imaad Shafe’i)
