We should understand that love or Muhabbat is something which severs all anxieties and something which conceals all secrets. For the special people, this is a Nur and for the common people, it is like fire. A heart in which this is found becomes restless. This is an illness through which a remedy is created on its own. Its beginning is “Fana” and its end is “Baqaa”. Outwardly it may seem full of hardship and trial but inwardly, there is joy and happiness. For those who are unlearned or for those who are novices, it is a type of ill-luck and sickness but for the true Aarif, it is cure and wellness.

In Surah Haa Meem Sajdah (41), verse 44:

“Say you, ‘that is a guidance and a cure for the believers.’ And those who believe not, in their ears is a plug and to them it is a blindness. They are like those. Who are called from a far off place.”

The various types of true lovers

There are many types of these people, but those who love Allah azza wajal are certainly a class above the rest. In Surah Baqarah, verse 165, the Qur’an declares that:

“and the believers love not anyone equal to that of Allah.”

In the Tafseer in this verse, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas Radi Allahu ‘Anhuna explains that, “From the word ‘Ashad’ it signifies firmness and steadfastness. It is seen that when the idol-worshippers see anything better than their idols, they leave their idols and begin to love this other object and they also begin to worship this other object. In other words, the disbelievers are always changing whom they love and worship, while the Muslim and the true believer never changes his love for Allah azza wajal.” (Tafseer Kabeer, 2/178)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ikramah Radi Allahu ‘Anhu explains that, “There is no doubt that a disbeliever in times of difficulty and problem turns away from his idol and actually turns towards Allah azza wajal.” (Tafseer Baghwi, 1/94)

In regard to this, Allah azza wajal declares in Suran Ankabut (29) verse 65:

“Then when they embark on boat they call upon Allah having exclusive faith upon Him. But when He brings them safe to the land, henceforth they begin to associate.”

In Bani Israel (17), verse 67, the Qur’an declares that:

“And when any trouble approaches you in the sea, then all whom they worship are lost except He. Then when He delivers you towards land, then you turn away your faces. And the man is very ungrateful.’

The greatness of a true believer

However, whether it is in times of hardship or calamity or whether it is times of happiness and joy, a true believer always remember his Creator azza wajal. Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Radi Allahu ‘Anhu explains that, “The disbeliever worships his idol with an ulterior motive. This is what they say about their idols as mentioned in Surah Zumar, verse 3:

“we worship them only so that they may bring us nearer to Allah.”

They also say, as is found in Surah Yunus, verse 18:

“And they worship besides Allah that which neither harms them nor does any good and say, ‘these are our intercessors with Allah’. Say you, ‘Do you tell to Allah the thing which is not in His Knowledge either in heavens or on earth. Holy is He and exalted is He from their association.”

The believers do not worship Allah azza wajal with any ulterior motive or because they seek anything from Allah azza wajal. They worship Allah azza wajal simply because they sincerely believe He is their Creator and He should be worshipped.  Another important difference is that these idols are things which these disbelievers have created with their own hands, while the Muslim believes that he is the creation of Allah azza wajal and that everything has been created by Allah azza wajal. Some have said that the idol-worshippers pray to their idols after looking at them while the Muslim believes and prays to Allah azza wajal without seeing Him. The Muslim also believes without seeing. This is the reason that the believer has been promised that he will see Allah azza wajal in the Hereafter. Therefore, due to this, the true believer only increases in his love for Allah azza wajal. When Allah azza wajal Himself declares that the true believer increases in his love for Allah azza wajal, this is proof that a true believer will continue to increase in his love for Allah azza wajal. (Tafseer Baghwi, 1/95)

Those who love Allah azza wajal, Allah azza wajal loves them.

In Surah Maidah, verse 54, the Qur’an declares:

“They will be dear to Allah and Allah will be dear to them.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Sufyan Thouri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu explaining the 286th verse of Surah Baqarah explains that in this verse the word “burden” signifies love. (Tafseer Baghwi, 209)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Darda Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates that the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has stated that Nabi Daud Alayhis Salaam had made this Du’a:

“O Allah I seek Your love from You and (I seek) the love of that person who loves You. I also seek the love of that action which makes me achieve Your Divine Love. O Allah! Give me more love (for You) than my life, my family or even cold water.” (Jamia Tirmidi, #349)

The greatness of those who are in the Masjid

Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates that the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has stated that, “Whoever loves Allah azza wajal, he should also love me. And whoever loves me, he should also love my companions. And he who loves my companions, he should also love the Holy Qur’an and he who loves the Holy Qur’an, he should also love the masjid. This is such a structure which ‘ Allah azza wajal has commanded to be built and has commanded to be kept clean and He has also placed Barakah in this. This is a place of goodness and Barakah and those who stay within, they are also good and are (full of) Barakah. This is a most liked place and those who are within it are also most liked. When they are in Salaah Allah azza wajal fulfils their needs and when they are within the Masjid, Allah azza wajal makes them achieve their objective.” (Ibn Habban, 1271; Mu’ammar, 2/20)

From this, we are able to see the mighty power of those who continue to frequent the Masjid and the immense Barakah for those who do this. There are many people in the present time who are always looking for more ways to become successful in this world and a perfect formula has been presented to us. It is a pity that Muslims are not able to see this magic formula.
