It is reported that the mother of Mohammed bin Hanafiyah was Khuwaylah binte Jafer Al Hanafiyah. She was a slave that was captured during the battle of Yamamah and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – had given her as a gift to Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him. Another report is that Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – had purchased her from the bazaar of Al Majaaz. (Say ‘Alaamul Nubla. 4/110)

Once a certain argument took place between Mohammed bin Hanafiyah and Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – and this difference between them continued for a lengthy period. They even refused to speak to each other. They refused to visit each other.

When the entire issue became prolonged and also a cause of concern, Mohammed bin Hanafiyah wrote a special note to his brother, Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – which read, “My father and your father is Hadrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with him. My mother was the daughter of the Banu Hanafiyah and whose respect and integrity is not hidden from anyone. However, your mother was the daughter of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – (whose status could never be reached by my mother). Therefore, you are much more excellent than me. Therefore, I urge you to come to me and also make me happy so that our relationship could once more blossom.”

It is reported that when Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – read this letter, he placed his shawl over his shoulders, put on his shoes and approached his brother, Mohammed bin Hanafiyyahl and also made sure that he was happy and made sure that there were no differences between them.
