Download PDF: [S] People who worship Allah in Secret (Islamic story)
Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed Adam – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that once he was walking past Hadrat Sayyiduna Laith bin Sa’ad – may Allah be pleased with him – when the latter called him and said to him, “O Saeed! Take this register and record the names of all those who spend all their time in the Masjid remembering Allah Almighty. They are those who have no time to do business because they are always in Ibadah and spiritual penitence. They also do not even have a piece of land where they can grow some crops. Record the names of all of these people so that a special monthly grant can be given to these people.”
When I heard this, I was extremely pleased and thanked him. I returned to my house. After all, this would be helping people in dire need. After ‘Isha Salaah, I then opened the register to record the names of these people and tried to remember the names of these people which I myself knew. Suddenly, I began to remember the names of each of them. I then wrote the “Bismillah” on the first page of this register and was about to record the names when I heard an Unseen Voice say to me, “O Saeed, by Allah Almighty! You are about to reveal the names of those people who worship their Creator in secrecy and you are doing all of this merely to make one person happy. Shuhaib bin Laith has also passed away and will not all of these people also return to their Lord?”
When I heard this Unseen Voice, I closed the register and did not record a single name.
In the morning, I approached Hadrat Sayyiduna Laith bin Sa’ad and I noticed that he was extremely happy at my arrival and quickly opened the register. However, he was shocked to notice that besides the “Bismillah”, there was nothing else written on the book. He then asked me the reason why I had only recorded this single line in the register and I then revealed to him what I had heard. When he heard my story, he screamed out aloud and began to shake. People also began to gather when they saw what was happening. They also began to ask me, “O Abu Haarith, is everything fine? What has happened with this person?” I mentioned that yes everything was fine. He then regained his senses and said to me, ‘O Saeed! It is very good that you were warned about this and did not commit this mistake.’ He then began to say that everyone will eventually return to the Creator. It was also famous in those days that Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed Adam – may Allah be pleased with him – was also among the Abdaal.
