During 1914, it is reported that a person left Syria with the intention of going to Halb on some business. There was also a massive snow storm and the roads were filled with snow. In those days, there were not many hotels in which a person could take refuge in. In fact, most people sought the houses of friends and family to shelter for the night. At the same time, such was the manner of people that if someone knocked on their door, the traveler was offered accommodation for the night and also a hot meal. This was something that people normally did.

 

This traveller knocked on someone’s door and informed them that he was a traveller and was looking for a place to stay the night. The people in the house welcomed him and also prepared some food for him. At the same time, they were also very poor people and only had two rooms in the house. One was used by the couple and the other room was a living room during the day and used as bedroom at night for their young son.

 

The people of the house began to speak to the guest and during this conversation, they also came to know that he was carrying extra money with him. While this conversation between the man of the house and the guest was going on, the wife heard about the money which was being carried by this person. When the husband returned to the room, she tried to convince him to steal the money from the guest. She said that since they were very poor, they had urgent need of this money. At first, the husband was not happy but he was also finally convinced that this was a good idea. They then decided to murder the guest while he was sleeping. They also knew on which side of this single bed, the guest was sleeping.

 

When everyone was asleep and while the lights were off, they entered this room and cut the throat of this guest. As they carried the body outside, they realised that they has succeeded in making themselves rich. However, when they went outside with the body, a lightning suddenly appeared and in the brightness, they realized that they had cut the throat of their own son.

 

In fact, during the night, while the guest and their son were speaking, the son had dozed off in that same part of the bed on which the guest was supposed to sleep on and because he saw this young man was already sleeping, he did not want to disturb him and left him on that side of the bed and slept on the other side.

 

The next morning, both parents were arrested and sent to jail. In this way, both of them found punishment in this world and what is to happen in the Hereafter still awaits them. (Sunairi Nuqus)
