Allah Almighty, describing iron, mentions in Surah Hadeed, verse 25 that:
“Indeed We sent Our Noble Messengers with proofs, and sent down the Book and the Balance of Justice along with them, so that people may stay upon justice; and We sent down iron having severe heat and benefits for mankind, and so that Allah may see him, who without seeing aides Him and His Noble Messengers; indeed Allah is Allah Almighty, Dominant.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates that when Nabi Adam – peace be upon him – came to earth, he brought with him three items. They were the Hajre Aswad, the stick of Moosa – peace be upon him – nd iron. (Tafseer Saawi. 4/149)
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates that metal was sent to earth from Jannah.
In another narration, the same eminent companion narrates that iron came from the heavens. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “There are four items of Barakah which the Allah Almighty revealed from the heavens. They were iron, fire, water and salt.” (Tafseer Saawi)
There is no confusion in these statements because obviously because Jannah is above the heavens and when it is said that it came from the heavens, it would mean Jannah and not the sky.
It is such a valuable item through which many things are made. Every type of weapon for war is also made from this material. There are also thousands of items which man requires and which is impossible to create or manufacture if iron was not found in that required object. This is the reason that the Qur’an has described this as something which is of great benefit to mankind. In brief, it is a Divine Gift which has been revealed by the Allah Almighty for the benefit of man. Therefore, when we look at these objects and materials, it stands to reason that we should also give thanks to the Allah Almighty for these graces. Allah knows best.
