It is mentioned that Sayyiduna Imam A’zam, Imam Abu Hanifah – may Allah be pleased with him – was also a student of Sayyiduna Imam Jafer Saadiq – may Allah be pleased with him.

 

In fact, the great Imam spent two years of his life seeking knowledge from the eminent Sayed which was the last two years of the great Sayed’s life. This is one of the reasons that the great Imam once mentioned, “If these two years did not appear, then Numan would have been destroyed.” In other words, he acquired immense knowledge from Imam Jafer Saadiq – may Allah be pleased with him – and made him his focal point in acquiring knowledge. The great Sayed also had the same high regard for his student as well.

 

Once someone asked Imam Jafer Saadiq – may Allah be pleased with him – a question and he replied, “Among you people, Abu Hanifah is also present. You people should ask him any question. In that nation in which there is Abu Hanifah, there is no need to ask anyone else.”

It is also sad that many students of this great Sayed also became corrupt later on except Imam Abu Hanifah – may Allah be pleased with him. Some of these deceitful students also spoke many lies against the great Sayed. It is also reported that once, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – gave a little bit of his blessed saliva to Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas bin Maalik – may Allah be pleased with him – and mentioned to him, “Convey this to Abu Hanifah”. It is mentioned that while he was still young, Imam Abu Hanifah – may Allah be pleased with him – did meet the eminent Sahabi and this trust was then conveyed to him. (Safeenatul Awliyah, 32)
