Moulana Zia’udeen Barni (who is also the author of the treatise Taarikh Firouz Shah) mentioned:
I was once in the blessed company of the great saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sultanul Mashaa’ikh, Hadrat Nizaamudeen Awliyah – may Allah be pleased with him. From the time of Ishraq until the time Chaast, I continued to listen to his amazing words of advice. At the same time, there were also many people who were becoming Mureeds. I then thought to myself that the past Awliya were extremely cautious on who they accepted as their Mureeds, but this great Saint allowed everyone and anyone to become his Mureed. I also wanted to question him about this. However, before I could say anything, he looked at me and declared, “Moulana Zia’udeen! You are in the habit of asking all types of questions. Why do you not ask me why I accept all and everyone who wants to become my Mureed?”
When I heard these words, I was certainly startled and shocked. This was certainly the amazing Knowledge of the Unseen as possessed by the Awliya that they can certainly look into the hearts of people. In embarrassment, I replied, “For a long time, this was something which troubled me and even today, this thought has occurred. However, Allah Almighty has already informed you of this.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Sultanul Mashaa’ikh, Hadrat Nizaamudeen Awliyah – may Allah be pleased with him – then declared, “I will inform you about why I behave in this manner. One of the reasons is that I have heard from many authentic sources that when a person becomes a Mureed, he also makes an effort to seek pardon for his past sins. They also make the effort to perform Salaah in congregation. Some of them even make an effort to increase in their Nawaafil Ibadah. Now, if I displayed such severity on who became a Mureed there is a possibility that these noble and good deeds may not emanate from these people. At the same time, this permission was clearly given to me to make these people my Mureeds by my great Shaikh. I also notice that many people come from far and wide and with great effort and they make the promise that they would refrain from all sin and transgression (when becoming a Mureed). I am of the opinion that these people are sincere in their oath, hence I accept their Bay’at. I have also heard that many people actually transform for the better when they accept the Bay’at of another person.” (Sayrul Awliyah, Taarikh Mashaa’ikh Chist)
It is mentioned that once during midday while Hadrat Sayyiduna Sultanul Mashaa’ikh, Hadrat Nizaamudeen Awliyah – may Allah be pleased with him – was asleep in his private room, a poor person arrived and there was nothing to eat. His servant, Akhi Mubaarak, then turned the person away empty-handed. At that moment, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sultanul Mashaa’ikh, Hadrat Nizaamudeen Awliyah – may Allah be pleased with him – saw his great master, Hadrat Sayyiduna Baba Fareed – may Allah be pleased with him – in a dream. His master also informed him that even if there was nothing in the house, the person should at least be treated in a kind and honourable manner. “Who is this person who turns away people from your court.” When the great Saint woke up, he called Akhi Mubaarak and scolded him for his actions. He also gave strict instructions that if anyone arrived at the Darbaar, even if he is asleep, he should be awakened. (Sayrul Awliyah)
In the same treatise, it is mentioned that whoever came to visit Hadrat Nizaamudeen Awliyah – may Allah be pleased with him – from afar, they always brought some sweet meat. They considered it a great honour to present this to the great Saint.
There was once a sceptic who began to think that when all of these little parcels are placed in front of the Saint, his servant takes all of them away. How would this Saint know which parcel belongs to which person. As a test, he then picked up some sand and wrapped it in the same manner as all the other little parcels were wrapped. When everyone had placed their little parcels of sweet meats in front of this great Saint, this sceptic also placed his little parcel. After a few minutes, the khadim also began to gather all the little parcels to take them but when it came to the little parcel of this sceptic, Hadrat Nizaamudeen Awliyah – may Allah be pleased with him – pointed to this parcel and declared, “Leave this, this is Surmah which should be placed on my eyes.” When this sceptic heard this, he was shocked and immediately made Taubah for his actions and became a Mureed of the great Saint.
