Hadrat Sayyiduna Humaid’s – may Allah be pleased with him – title was “Abu Abdullah” and his family lineage is Mohammed bin Abi Nasr Futuhu bin Abdullah bin Humaid Azdi. One of his titles is also “Humaidi”. He was from Andalusia but later in his life he settled in Baghdad Shareef.
He acquired knowledge from Abu Bakr Khateeb. Another famous Muhaddith, namely Ameer bin Makula, was among his friends. He states that he himself had never seen someone as pious and pure in character as Imam Humidi – may Allah be pleased with him.
Many people had tested him in functions and in private, but never once could they trap hin into speaking about the world. His piety was so immense that it can be gleamed from the following incident.
It is reported that once Abu Bakr bin Maymun went to visit him at his house. When he knocked on the door of Imam Humaidi – may Allah be pleased with him – he did not hear the knock and because Abu Bakr bin Maymun did not hear anyone stopping him from entering the house, he walked in to the house of Imam Humaidi – may Allah be pleased with him.
At that time, Imam Humaidi – may Allah be pleased with him – was sitting but his thighs were visible. He had no idea that someone had entered his house. Imam Humaidi – may Allah be pleased with him – was very sad about this incident and he wept for a long period because of what had happened. He used to say that from the time he gained maturity no one had ever seen his thigh. He passed away on the 17th of Zil Hajj 488 A.H. The famous Shafi jurist, Abu Bakr Shaami – may Allah be pleased with him, performed the Janazah Salaah.
It is also reported that before he could pass away, he had mentioned to an influential person in Baghdad Shareef to have him buried near the grave of Hadrat Sayyiduna Bishar Haafi – may Allah be pleased with him. However, this person had forgotten and had buried him near the grave of Shaikh Abu Ishaq Shiraazi – may Allah be pleased with him. However, Imam Humaidi – may Allah be pleased with him – continued to appear in the dream of this person and kept on reminding him. Finally, after a period of two years and two months, the great Muhaddith was removed from his grave and buried at the chosen spot. The people were also shocked to see that his body and kafan were still fresh. There was also a sweet scent which emanated from his grave and body. One of his famous treatise is “Al Majmu’a baynas Saheehain.”
