Download PDF: [S] Justice to evn non-Muslims (Islamic story)
It is mentioned that once Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – walked past a person who was begging on the road. He asked the person, “What has forced you to beg?” The person replied, “Jizyah, old age and a dire need.” Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him from which community he came and he replied that he was a Jew. The great Muslim leader then took him to his house and gave him some wealth and also pardoned him from giving the Muslims Jizyah anymore. He also wrote the following note to those Muslims who were in charge of collecting taxes.
He wrote, “Look at this old person and others like him. It is not proper that we collect their earning when they are young and when they become old, we leave them without support.” Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – not only left this old person in this state, he also made sure that a monthly stipend be given to the person. Obviously, this was not from Zakaah but from normal charity or Sadqah.
Many such examples have been seen in history which has certainly amazed the non-Muslims.
These non-Muslims used to live under some of the most horrible circumstances when they were ruled by their leaders, but with the blessed arrival of Islam, they were shocked at what the new religion brought with it. This resulted in many of them freely and voluntarily accepting Islam. They saw that Islam had also given them many chances and opportunities and this greatly affected them. Islam was that religion which came to protect the weak, the old, the women, the disabled and those who could not manage to support themselves no matter which religion they beloved to.
This was one of the main reasons that many communities and nations readily accepted Islam. In fact another amazing issue which transpired under the command of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Waleed – may Allah be pleased with him – was the rules which he laid down to the people of Hiraah in Iraq. Pertaining to those who were liable to pay Jizyah, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – excluded the following people.
- Those who were unable to earn a living.
- Those who were embroiled in some problems.
- Those who have become poor after being wealthy.
- Those who have become so poor and destitute that even their own kind starts to give them charity. In fact, not only were these people excused from giving the Muslims Jizyah, they were also given a special allowance by the Muslim government until they had sorted themselves out.
It is mentioned that when the Emperor of Rome had gathered a large force to attack the Muslims, at that time, the Muslim army was spread all over the region. When the Muslims realized the danger they were in, they decided to gather all their forces under one central command and they did this under the command of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him. Look at what Islam had taught these blessed individuals. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah – may Allah be pleased with him – then wrote to all the Governors of these regions that whatever Jizyah (or protective Tax) which they had collected from these citizens should be give back to them.
He also wrote a note to the citizens of each region wherein he informed them, “We have returned your wealth because we have been informed that a very large force has been prepared against us. Our condition was that we would be able to protect you, however, at this time (due to what is happening), we are not in a position to protect you”.
All of the wealth was then given back to these non-Muslims who had paid the Jizyah. The surprising thing is that when the Muslim army was leaving this area, the non-Muslim citizens were actually making Du’a for their victory. Some of them actually made Du’a, “May Allah allow you to return quickly to us and that you are able to defeat the Romans.”
It is mentioned that when the Muslims were expelled from Syria and Palestine, the Christians were forced to obey the Romans and when the Muslim army under the command of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him – reached the Jordan valley and he began to prepare his forces, at the time a secret message was sent to the Muslims by the Christian population in these cities which read, “We wish to inform the Muslims that even though the Romans believe in our religion, but you are more beloved to us than the Romans. You also fulfil our rights better than them and are much more kind hearted. You refrain from oppressing us and hence, your government would be much better for us. However, at this moment, we are helpless because the Romans have even taken over our houses.” (Kitaab Al Khiraaj, Imam Abu Yusuf)
This was the quality of the early Muslims and their immense mercy and kindness. No example in history can be presented like the Muslim rule under the blessed Ashaab. This is the reason that within a few years, they controlled most of the world.
In the present time, the sad part is that so-called Muslim governments have become slaves of their masters being the West. However, they should all remember that when the Divine Wrath of Allah Almighty comes, it will take all of them together. There will be no escape. When we see what is happening to Muslims today, the only thing that people are doing is talking and talking.
Until today, they have not understood that talk is cheap. Muslims look at TV every day and what they see happening to the Muslims around the world, they treat as nothing but mere world news. Something that they can inform their friends about and nothing else. Today, the same people who have massacred the innocent in Syria and other places are collecting food hampers for these people so that their true evil will remain hidden. It may remain hidden from mankind for these few days, but very soon, everyone has to present themselves in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty. Those who only spoke will have to answer and those who committed these crimes will have to answer. There are no return tickets in the Hereafter. That is the greatest news for the oppressed.
