When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – arrived in Madina Shareef, he had a special agreement drawn up between the Muslims and the Jews living in and around the city. However, as is the behaviour of Jews in general, they refused to abide by these agreements. As a matter of fact, they continued to plot and plan against the Muslims and tried their level best to destroy the Muslims and the Islam as a religion.
Once the Bani Nudair called the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – for a private meeting, but their aim was to assassinate him while he sat with them. Their plot was that while he was sitting next to a wall, someone would drop a rock of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and they thought that in this manner, they would get rid of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
However, as the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was walking towards this village, Allah Almighty informed His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – about the evil scheme of these people. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then silently returned without telling the Jews anything. In this manner, the evil plot of these Jews could not be carried out.
When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – arrived in Madina Shareef, he informed Mohammed bin Muslimah to inform the Jews that since they had persistently broken their agreements, they were ordered to leave this area and never to return. When the Munafiqs heard this, they all gathered with the Jews and also informed them that they should not leave this place. They also informed the Banu Nudair that they would also help them against the Muslims.
When the Bani Nudair heard about the support of the Munafiqs, they decided that they will not obey the command of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then decided to wage war against the Jews and left Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umme Maktum – may Allah be pleased with him – in charge of Madina Shareef.
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then surrounded the fort of the Bani Nudair and also instructed that all the trees around this fort be cut down. He also felt that perchance, the Jews would be able to hide in these shrubs, hence the precaution taken.
When the Jews saw this, they were filled with terror and they could also see that the Munafiqs had failed to help them in this moment of need. Finally, they surrendered and asked that they be given the opportunity to leave the area. They were then allowed to take all their belongings except any weapons of war. They then left this area outside Madina Shareef after having loaded nearly six hundred camels with their goods. Some of them went to the fort of Khyber and some of them left for Syria and various outlying areas. At the same time, these Jews also destroyed their homes so that the Muslims could not occupy them. (Madaarijun Nubuwah, Part 2; Zarqani, 2/79 to 85)
This incident in mentioned in Surah Hashr. In Surah Hashr, verse 2, the expulsion of the Banu Nudair has also been explained. The Qur’an declares:
“It is He Who expelled the disbelievers among the People given the Book(s) from their homes, for their first gathering; you did not expect them to leave, whereas they assumed that their fortresses would save them from Allah, so Allah’s command came to them from a place they had not imagined; and He instilled awe in their hearts, so they ruin their own houses by their own hands and at the hands of the Muslims; therefore learn a lesson, O those who can perceive!”
A special trait of the Jews.
In history, the Jews have always been noted to have harboured secret hatred for anyone who have been good to them. This trait of hypocrisy is something which has been seen many times in history. At the same time, the oppression and Kufr of these people are also well known. Most of the Prophets were killed by these people. At the same time, on many occasion, they themselves admitted that they were killing these Prophets unjustly. The treachery of these people have been mentioned many times in the Qur’an and the Muslims have been warned to be weary of these people. The Muslims should never place any trust on these Jews at any time and should constantly be on the lookout for these people.
This can also be seen in the present time and the amount of oppression which they have placed on latter day Muslims. The oppression which goes on in the Middle East is seen by everyone. Even though the entire world curses the US and Israel, but the Jews, like their forefathers, display no shame or embarrassment. Even though the poor people of Palestine cannot fight against these powers on a military level, but we have great hope that very soon immense punishment will certainly befall the Jews.
