It is mentioned that one day the great Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – was walking in a desolate area and on the way, he met a soldier. The soldier asked him, “Are you a servant of Allah?” Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – replied that he was indeed.

When the solider asked him in which direction was the city, he pointed towards the nearby graveyard. However, the solider replied, “I am looking for the city which is inhabited by people.” However, the great Saint replied, “Yes, yes, this is the largest inhabited area and it is also brightly lit and has a large population.”

When this soldier heard these words; in a fit of anger, he began to hit the great Saint with his stick. The great Saint also began to bleed. He then dragged the great Saint towards the city. However, when the disciples of the great Saint saw this, they angrily asked, “O soldier! Do you have any idea who this is? This is Ebrahim bin Adham.”

The solider was extremely shocked. He had also heard about this great Saint. This was that famous king who had divorced the entire world including his kingdom for the Pleasure of Allah Almighty.

Even though Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – had wished to sink into oblivion, this is not the Divine Rule of Allah Almighty. He has made a promise that whosoever remembers Him, He will certainly bestow upon them a most lofty status and position and He will also make them famous.

The soldier then jumped off his horse and placed his head at the blessed feet of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him –and asked him why he had called himself a mere slave of Allah Almighty at the very beginning. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – replied that he was indeed a mere slave of Allah Almighty. The soldier then pleaded to him to pardon him. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “When you struck me the first time with the stick, at that moment I had pardoned you.”

When the people asked him the reason for this, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “The reason is that he would have received the punishment for this action and I would have received the reward for having pardoned him. However, since he had sought forgiveness for his actions and has also displayed regret for this actions then with Allah Almighty, his sin and transgression has also be pardoned.” (Kimiyah Sa’aadat, Imam Ghazzali)

*It is mentioned that once another famous saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Noori – may Allah be pleased with him – went to a private place to have a bath. He also placed his clothes on one side and during this time, a thief came and stole his clothes. The great Saint continued to stand in the water waiting for his clothes. However, Allah Almighty is able to create a solution for His special servants in these difficult times. In fact, such solutions are created for these special servants which even boggles the mind of ordinary people.

A few minutes later, the same thief returned with the clothes of the great Saint. The only difference was that the left hand of the thief was actually paralysed. He then placed these clothing in front of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Noori – may Allah be pleased with him – and sincerely asked him to pardon him for this mistake. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Noori – may Allah be pleased with him – then made Du’a, “O Allah! This person has once again returned my clothing, please return his hand once again to him.” Before he could finish his Du’a, the hand of the thief was once again restored to its original state. After greeting the Saint once again, he departed. (Hilyatul Awliyah, Hafiz Abu Naeem Isfahani)

*It is mentioned that Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Noori – may Allah be pleased with him – one day rented a house next to a Jew. His door was also next to the door of the Jew. However, the Jew, in a show of spite, made a gutter in such a place where all the dirt came into the room of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Noori – may Allah be pleased with him. In fact, even the place where he used to make Ibadah also became soiled.

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Noori – may Allah be pleased with him – never once complained about this to his Jewish neighbour.

One day, the Jew asked him. “I hope that there is no harm caused by the gutter which I have created.” He replied, “Whatever dirt comes through this gutter, I am able to clean it away and also wash it away every day. No harm is caused.”

However, the Jew asked him, “Even though I have caused such immense difficulty for you, yet not once, have you ever become angry.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Noori – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “It is the Divine Command of Allah Almighty that whoever is able to control his anger, not only is his sins pardoned, but he also receives reward for this action.”

When the Jew heard this, he declared, “There is no doubt that this religion which you belong to is indeed a very noble religion if it is able to create such behaviour in people. Therefore, I make you a witness that as of today, I have accepted the religion of Islam.” (Tadkiratul Awliyah)

*The manner of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him – was also the same.

It is mentioned that one day, a person approached him with the intention of assassinating him. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him – already knew the intention of this person. However, when this person approached Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him, the great Saint welcomed him in a very gently and well-mannered way. When the person sat next to the great saint, he said to the person, “What intention you have come, you may fulfil that intent.”

When this person heard this, he began to tremble with extreme fear and placing his head at the blessed feet of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him, he declared, “I have been deceived by wealth and riches and have been sent to destroy you.” After saying this, he removed the knife and placed it in front of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him – and then asked the great Saint to give him whatever punishment he wished.

But, Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “It is our manner that whatever evil is committed against us, we repay that with kindness and therefore, you have done nothing against me”.

After saying this, he made a special Du’a for this person. This person was extremely affected by the behaviour of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him – and started to stay in the company of the great saint. He also visited the Haram Shareef on numerous occasions through the blessing of the great Saint and also passed away in that blessed city. There is no doubt that it was through the kind heart of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaaz – may Allah be pleased with him – that won so many millions to Islam.

It also earned him the title of “Sultanul Hind”. This is also the reason that so many millions turned away from their idols towards the Masjid. (Sayrul Aqtaab)

*The story of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khayrun Nisaaj – may Allah be pleased with him – has also been mentioned earlier. However, listen to the real story.

His actual name was Mohammed bin Ismail, but he was famously called “Khayrun Nisaaj.” It happened in the following manner.

One day, as Hadrat Sayyiduna Khayrun Nisaaj – may Allah be pleased with him – left his house to perform the Hajj, he passed the town of Kufah. At the door of this city, a person who used to sell silk took hold of him and told him that he was actually his slave. He said to him that his actual name was “Khayr”. He also told Hadrat Sayyiduna Khayrun Nisaaj – may Allah be pleased with him – that from today, he was not to leave this place. The Saint then thought that perhaps this was the Divine Wisdom of Allah Almighty and he remained silent without objecting to whatever the person was telling him. Hadrat Sayyiduna Khayrun Nisaaj – may Allah be pleased with him – then served this person for a certain period and whenever this person used to call him Khayr, he used to always answer the person. However, after some time, the person informed him that he was not actually his servant and that he had made a mistake.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Khayrun Nisaaj – may Allah be pleased with him – then silently left for Mecca Shareef. Later on, he reached such a high degree in Sainthood that even Hadrat Sayyiduna Junaid Baghdadi – may Allah be pleased with him – once said of him, “Khayr is the best among us.”

At the same time, such was his love and concern for the Muslims that after this incident, he never allowed anyone to call him by any other name except “Khayr”. (Risaalah Qushayriyyah)

* There was a famous Saint who was also very famous for his kindness and patience and forbearance. When people asked him where he had learned these noble traits from, he replied that he had learnt it from his eminent teacher who was also one of the authorities on Qirah, namely Imam Asim – may Allah be pleased with him-.

They then asked him to describe some of the qualities of this eminent Imam and he explained, “Once Imam Asim – may Allah be pleased with him – was outside the boundary of the town and had gone very far out. While he was there, a very rude person then approached him and started to behave extremely arrogantly with him. This person also spoke very rudely to him. However, Imam Asim – may Allah be pleased with him – did not tell the person anything. He remained silent. This person continued to speak to him in this rude and arrogant manner and also continued to follow Imam Asim – may Allah be pleased with him – until they reached the city limits. When both of them were in the crowd, Imam Asim – may Allah be pleased with him – looked at the person and said to him, “O my friend please go back from here because there are many people who know and respect me in this city. I do not wish that when they see the manner in which you are behaving, they might harm you.”

This person also presented another incident. He mentioned, “Once, a few other students and I were in the company of Imam Asim – may Allah be pleased with him – and were taught a few lessons. He was explaining a few intricate points and we were recording whatever he was saying. At that moment, he also had a shawl around his waist and knees. While he was teaching us, someone came with the news that his son had been killed by his cousin brother. Since there was some enmity between them, it led to the death of his son. When he heard this news, he informed the person to approach someone and he was to ask that person to take care of the funeral rites of his son. He then continued teaching without allowing himself to be disturbed.” (Fawaa’idul Fawaad)
