Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates, “Once while travelling on a journey, I met a most unusual person. Except for the clothes he was wearing he had nothing else. He was alone. I greeted him and he greeted me back.
“I asked him, ‘May Allah Almighty have mercy on you, where do you intend to go?’
“He replied, ‘I have no idea.’
“I then asked him, ‘Have you ever met someone who has no idea where he intends to go?’
“He replied, ‘Yes, one of them is me.’
“I then asked, ‘Be that as it may, where do you intend to actually go to?’
“He replied, ‘I intend to travel to Mecca Shareef.’
“I then declared, ‘You intend to travel to Mecca Shareef and yet, you have no idea where you are going to?’
“He replied, ‘Yes, this is the truth. The reason is that on many occasions I intended to travel to Mecca Shareef and then ended up in Tartus. Sometimes I travelled to Egypt and ended up in another country. These type of incidents do happen to me. This time also, I intend to travel to Mecca Shareef, and I wait to see where I will end up.’
“I then asked him, ‘What about your food for the journey?’
He replied, ‘This is left to the Most Merciful. If He intends to keep me hungry, then in spite of me eating, I remain hungry. If He wishes to feed me, then even though I have not eaten anything, I become full. Sometimes He displays immense stature on me and sometimes, I am visited by trial and calamity. Sometimes I hear a Voice, ‘O thief! There is no one more mischievous than you and sometimes I hear a voice saying, ‘There is no one like you on earth and there is no one more of a Zaahid than you’. My Master sometimes allows me to sleep on a soft and comfortable bed and sometimes I am thrown to a barren land to sleep.’
“I then asked him who he was speaking about and he replied, ‘He is the Owner of all the universe, the Allah Almighty, the Master of the Day of Judgement. He has placed me in an ocean in which there is no shore.’
“As soon as he said this, he began to weep. I felt extreme sorrow for him and also began to weep. I then began to hear the sound of weeping from all corners of the valley. I became surprised and asked him, ‘O the slave of Allah Almighty! I can also hear the sounds of others who are weeping. Where are these sounds coming from?’
“He replied, ‘There are some Jinnaat who are my good friends and whenever I weep, they also weep with me.’”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that as soon as he said this, he disappeared.
This is the Divine Right of the Allah Almighty how He treats His slaves. Sometimes He allows people to laugh, sometimes He allows people to weep. Sometimes, people starve and sometimes people are given abundance of food. Sometimes, he bestows upon His special friends from places where even the mind is confused. The best of people are those who are happy and satisfied with His Divine Will. When a person reaches this state, then there is success every step he takes.
