Hadrat Sayyiduna Mohammed bin Naeem – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates from his mother, who narrates:

“I heard the wife of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu ‘Uthman Heeri – may Allah be pleased with him, namely Hadrat Sayyidah Maryam – may Allah be pleased with her – narrate the following incident.

She explains, “Once, I was sitting alone (with the great Saint and my husband) Hadrat Sayyidi Uthman Heeri – may Allah be pleased with him – and thinking of this as a very fortunate moment, I asked him as to which incident in his life did he consider as very fortunate  and very beloved.”

He replied, “O Maryam! When I was young and I used to live in the city of Rayy and people liked me a lot. Everyone wished that I marry someone in their family. However, I always refused to accept this. One day, a female approached me and said, ‘I am very much in love with you and it is difficult for me to sleep at night or rest in the day thinking about you. I ask you in the Name of that Divine Being Who is able to change the hearts of people to please accept me in marriage.’

“I then asked her whether her father was alive. She replied that her father was alive and was a tailor who lived in a certain area. I then sent my marriage proposal to her father who was extremely happy. He then called all the local people and had me married to his daughter.

“However, when I entered the bedroom on the night of the marriage I noticed that my new bride was someone who was blind in one eye. She was also lame and extremely not good-looking. However, I remained silent and made Du’a to Allah Almighty in the following manner, ‘O Allah! All Praises certainly belong to You and whatever You have decreed for me, I give thanks to You.’

“When my family came to know of the appearance of my new wife, they began to insult me and also directed some insults at me. However, I never revealed to my wife what I had heard. In fact, I was extremely kind to her and always made sure that whatever she required, it was fulfilled. Her state also changed and she could not do without me for any long period. Since the appearance of my new wife was well known to everyone, merely to avoid any insults, I even refused to attend the gathering of any of my close friends. I also spent much time with her so that she could remain happy and does not become a victim of any inferior complex. In this manner, I spent nearly fifteen years with this wife of mine. At times, I used to experience extreme difficulty and stress with everything that went on around me, but I never for one day allowed myself to complain to her or anyone else. After fifteen years, she passed away. I therefore believe that the kindness and concern which I displayed for this disable wife of mine was the most beloved action which I had performed in this world.” (Uyunul Hikaayah)

There is no doubt that the self-sacrifice of these pious servants of Allah Almighty has no boundaries. The manner in which they went out of their way to please the creation of Allah Almighty are certainly examples that only boggle the mind.
