Download PDF: [S] His Generosity to the Hujjaj (Islamic story)
It is mentioned that the eminent scholar and Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – used to live in the city of Merv which in those days was part of Iraq. During most years, he used to go for Hajj. Most of his friends, family and companions always also had the intention of joining him for Hajj. It is said that he was extremely generous and used to spend on others without being stingy.
One year, some people came to him and said, “Hadrat! If you are going for Hajj, we would also like to accompany you as well.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – agreed to this but made it clear that they must first bring all their personal goods and items which they intended to take for Hajj and leave it with him. When everyone had brought their goods, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – took all of it and placed it in a special box and locked the box. He then personally arranged camels for each one of them and they began their journey.
From Merv, they travelled to Baghdad Shareef and during the journey, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – made sure that everyone had the best food and drink on the journey also making sure that no one purchased anything with their money. He purchased for them what they needed on the journey.
They then reached Madina Shareef. After completing their Ziyaarat, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – called each one of them to ask them what their family had requested from them to acquire in Madina Shareef. He then proceeded to buy for each one of them these items himself.
In this manner, they then reached Mecca Shareef. After the Hajj, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – did the same thing and called each one of them and asked them what their family had requested from Mecca Shareef. He then purchased for each one of them their desired items.
On the return journey, the same thing happened. They did not have to purchase anything on the journey. All food and drink was purchased by him. After they reached Merv, he waited for three days so that everyone would have recovered from the journey and then prepared a large get together for everyone. He then called for the large box in which he had placed everyone’s good at the beginning and handed all of these items back to them. In others words, one can safely say that they went and came free of charge. (Sayr)
