Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – is the paternal cousin of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and is also a maternal cousin of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khaleed bin Waleed – may Allah be pleased with him. He was born in the valley of Shu’hub Ali and the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also placed his blessed saliva in his mouth. He also had seen Jibra’eel Ameen in the presence of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

He is considered as a great scholar of Qur’an, Hadith, and was highly sought after by the first three Muslim leaders in the forming of any decision or decree. He was well-versed in the laws of Islam and also in Arab history. This is one of the reasons that he was given the title of “Hibrul Ummah”. He passed away in Taif in 68th year of Hijrah. (Usdul Ghabah, 3/290,294)

In the Sahih Bukhari Shareef, this eminent companion narrates that once a person asked to be allowed in the presence of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. The great Muslim leader allowed him in.

When this person approached Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – he declared, “O Khattab’s son! You do not give us any gifts and you do not practise justice among us.” The moment he heard this, he went into great rage and wanted to severely punish this person at that precise spot, however, Hadrat Sayyiduna Hurr bin Qais – may Allah be pleased with him – who was also sitting there, recited the 199th verse of Surah Al Araf which is:

خُذِ الْعَفْوَ وَاۡمُرْ بِالْعُرْفِ وَ اَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْجٰہِلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۹﴾

“(O beloved Prophet)! Adopt forgiveness and bid towards good and turn away from the ignorant.”

It is reported that the moment he heard this Qur’anic verse, his temper immediately subsided. (Sahih Bukhari Shareef, #4642)
