It is recorded that once a person approached a certain Qadi on the Day of Aashurah for some help.
He said, “May Allah Almighty give respect to the Qadi. I am a poor person who also has children and I have approached you using the blessing of this day. I have approached you with the intention of asking you to help me with some flour, some meat and at least two Dirhams. I also make Du’a in the Divine Court of the Almighty Allah that He gives you immense reward.”
The Qadi then promised him to help him by Zohar. However, when the time of Zohar appeared and this poor person approached him, the Qadi promised him that he will help him by Asr. When the time of Asr came and by now the little children in the house were also in great hunger, the Qadi promised him that he will help him by Maghrib. However, when the poor person approached him at the time of Maghrib, the Qadi informed him that he had nothing to give him. The poor person was certainly devastated by this news and while weeping, he left the Qadi. He also had this immense sadness of what he would tell his children.
In this sad state, he also passed by a Christian and this person was sitting on his front porch. When the Christian person saw him, he asked him the reason for his weeping. He said that he did not wish to reveal the actual reason. However, the Christian took an oath in the name of the Divine Creator that he should certainly reveal the true story.
The poor person then revealed the entire incident of what had happened with the Qadi. After listening to this, the Christian informed him, “With you people, how is this day and what is the significance of this day?”
He then informed the Christian about the Day of Aashurah among the Muslims. The poor person also explained some of the excellences of this day. When the Christian person heard this, he felt extreme sorrow for this poor person and gave him even more than what he asked for. Besides the two Dirhams, he also gave the poor person another twenty Dirhams. He also informed the poor person, “Take these things and because of the auspiciousness of this and the greatness which the Almighty Allah has kept in this day, whatever I have given you today, every month, the same amount will be given to you for your family.”
The poor person then took all of these things to his house and obviously he was extremely well pleased by all of these presents. The members of his family then made a special Du’a to Allah Almighty, “O Allah Almighty! As this person has made us happy, please also reveal Your Divine Pleasure on this person as quickly as possible.”
The same night as the Qadi was asleep, he heard an Unseen Voice say to him, “Raise your head”
When he raised his head, he could see two magnificent mansions. One was made from silver and one made from gold. The Qadi then asked, “O Allah Almighty! Who does this two mansions belong to?”
The answer was given to him, “Without doubt both of these were for you on condition that you had fulfilled the need of the poor person. However, when you turned him away empty-handed, thereafter, this would be now given to a certain Christian.”
When the Qadi heard this statement, he awoke with extreme fear and went looking for this Christian. He then asked him what good deed he had performed the previous night and when the Christian asked him the reason for this question, he explained to this Christian what he had seen in a dream.
He also mentioned to the Christian, “Whatever good deed you had performed the previous night, please sell this to me for a thousand Dirhams.”
However, the Christian replied, “I will never sell this even for a mountain of gold. However, I wish to make you a witness and I am now reading the Kalimah in front of you and accepting Islam.” And this is how he passed away. (Nawaadir Al Qalyubi)
