It is reported that once, the famous tyrant, Hujjaj bin Yusuf, arrived in Mecca Shareef to perform the Hajj. He also brought a large contingent of soldiers and guards who surrounded him all the time. After completing the Tawaaf he arrived at the Maqam-e-Ebrahim and decided to rest at this place. He also read the two rak’ah of Salaah and while he was doing this, his large group of soldiers placed themselves all around him as a security perimeter.

The narrator of this incident is a famous scholar whose name is Ta’oos bin Kaysaan. He narrates:

I was sitting myself near the Maqam-e-Ebrahim. Suddenly, there was a large noise. When I turned around, I noticed that it was Hujjaj and his soldiers. When the tyrant had completed the two rak’ah of Salaah, he sat near the same place.

At that moment, a poor person from Yemen walked past. He then made Tawaaf of the Ka’ba and he had no idea that Hujjaj was sitting near the Maqam-e-Ebrahim. However, while this poor person was making Tawaaf, the lower part of his clothing happen to get stuck in the sharp point of a spear of one of the guards. When he forced it out, this spear then hit Hujjaj. Obviously, Hujjaj was very terrified of what had happened and asked his soldiers to grab this person and bring him to him.

When the soldiers captured this person, they presented him in front of Hujjaj.

The following conversation took place.

Hujjaj: You do not recognize who I am?

Yemeni: No.

Hujjaj: Who is the Governor in Yemen?

Yemeni: He is the brother of someone called Hujjaj and his name is Mohammed bin Yusuf. In fact, he is a tyrant like his brother or even a greater tyrant than his brother.

Hujjaj: You do not know that I am his brother?

Yemeni: Are you the person they call Hujjaj?

Hujjaj: Yes.

Yemeni: You and your brother are indeed tyrants.

Hujjaj: In what condition did you leave my brother when you left Yemen?

Yemeni: He was someone who had eaten a lot and made himself fat like a cow.

Hujjaj: I am not asking you about his state of health, I am asking you about his justice.

Yemeni: What type of justice can he do? He himself is a tyrant and he also steals the wealth and property of others as well.

Hujjaj: You do not know that he is my brother. And still you display no fear for me?

Yemeni: Do you think that by calling yourself his brother, you can gain greater respect? Bear in mind that I only fear Allah Almighty and no one else.

Ta’oos bin Kaysaan mentions that when he heard these words of the poor Yemeni, he himself went into a state of panic. However, since they were inside the Haram Shareef, Hujjaj could do nothing against this person. This person then continued to complete his Tawaaf as if nothing had happened. (Sunairi Awraaq)

This clearly proves that a true Muslim never fears any tyrant no matter which position he holds. It also shows us that during times in Islamic history, there were also people who appeared to taunt and test the Imaan of a true Muslim. In the present time also we find that people who have no connection with true Islam would bring amazing wonders in front of Muslims merely with the intention of making innocent Muslims their ardent followers. They have no idea that on the Day of Judgement they will have to account for their actions. In this world, they may think that they have become powerful or influential, but in the Hereafter, this is the same amount of disgrace they will have to face.

The greatest harm which is being caused to Muslims in the present time comes from Jaahil Sufis and Jaahils who run after them. It is the typical example of the blind leading the blind. If people claim that they love and admire Sayyidi A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmed Raza – may Allah be pleased with him, how is it that they do not place their lives and behaviour in front of the teaching of the great Mujaddid and see how it measures? In fact, among most of these ignoramuses, it would equal to “sqwat”.

Therefore, we should always be on alert of people who are using the name of Sayyidi A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmed Raza – may Allah be pleased with him – to spread their nefarious activities. The first principle of the great Mujaddid is, “Have you made Taubah for your evil activities and beliefs or not”. If not, then the issue of intermingling with someone like this does not even arise. And if you do not follow this policy, then no matter how great your turban might look, you are definitely not on the path of the great Mujaddid even if you carry the Qur’an on your head and walk around the Masjid.
