It is reported that once a very dedicated and sincere scholar of Islam took some of the musical instruments of Marwan who was the Khalifah in Damascus and broke it in public. When the Khalifah heard about this, he ordered that this person be put in the same cage as a lion so that he could face death. However, when the scholar entered the cage, he began to read his Salaah. When the lion saw him, it started to wag its tail like a dog does in front of its master. The lion then began to lick the feet of this scholar while he continued to read his Salaah without being disturbed. This continued the entire night.

 

In the morning, the Khalifah wanted to know what had happened to this person. When he guards went to the lion’s cage they were shocked to find that the eminent scholar was still reading his Salaah while the lion was still licking his feet. The guards then released him from this cage and took him to the Khalifah. They asked him whether he had any fear for the lion because he was reading his Salaah with such deep concentration. He replied, “The entire night, I was concerned about the lion licking my feet because I knew that the saliva of a lion is unclean. Hence, I was more concerned about whether my Salaah was acceptable or not and not concerned about the lion at all.”

 

When Marwan heard these words, he was more scared about this eminent scholar than the lion itself and had him released immediately.

 

This incident proves to all of us that the rightful ‘Ulama are not scared about anything. At the same time, when it comes to declaring the truth, they are always helped and assisted by Allah Almighty.
