Download PDF: [S] He made Ibadah to Show the Public (Islamic story)
Hadrat Sayyiduna Masnur bin Ammaar – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates the following incident. He explains:
There was once a friend of mine who was a Muslim. He used to visit me in good and bad times. At the same time, I used to observe that he was a very religious and pious person and displayed these qualities in public.
However, I did not see him for a few days and on inquiry, I was told that he was not well. I then went to his house and knocked on the door. His little daughter came to the door. I told her that I wished to meet a certain person and also took his name. When I entered, I noticed that he was laying on a bed which was placed in the middle of the room. However, what was shocking was that his face had turned black in colour. His eyes were protruding and his lips had become swollen.
When I saw this, I obviously became afraid and requested him to read the Kalimah as much as possible. He then opened his eyes, peered at me and then lost consciousness. After a while, he peered at me again and again I advised him to read the Kalimah in excess.
On the third occasion, I informed him that if he did not read the Kalimah, I will not take part in his Ghusal or burial service. After he heard these words of mine, he mumbled, “O brother Mansur! Between me and the Kalimah, there seems to be a wall and veil.”
When I heard this, I mentioned La hawla. I then asked him about the Salaah which he had read, the fast which he had kept and the Tahajjud which he had claimed to have performed. He used to also claim that he stayed up the entire night in Ibadah.
When he heard my questions, he answered, “My dear brother! I never used to perform these Salaah for the Divine Pleasure of Allah Almighty. I used to read Salaah and Tahajjud so that people would consider me a great worshipper. At the same time, I used to also make the Dhikr of Allah Almighty so that others would notice me. When I used to be alone, I used to deliberately break my fast and I used to drink alcohol while being naked. I used to oppose my Creator by doing all types of bad deeds. I continued to live in this fashion for a long time and suddenly, I became sick and no hope remained for me.
“I then asked my daughter to bring the Qur’an. I continued to read the Qur’an and when I arrived at Surah Yaseen, I raised the Qur’an and made Du’a, ‘O Allah through the Sadqah of the Qur’an, please give me Shifa, I will never commit again.’ Allah Almighty then blessed me with Shifa. However, when I got well, I again started to act like before. Suddenly, again I became very ill. In all these times, I followed the evil whisperings of the Satan. Again, I asked my family to place my bed in the middle of the room and again I raised the Qur’an and made Du’a. Again the Allah Almighty blessed me with Shifa.
‘However, I quickly forgot the promise I had made to Allah Almighty until again I have become very ill. Again, I asked my family to bring the Qur’an but I could not read a word. I then realised that Allah Almighty had become extremely angry with me. However, still, I raised the Qur’an to the sky and made Du’a to Allah Almighty to remove my illness. I then heard a voice say to me, ‘When you become ill, you make Taubah for your sins and when you begin well, you again continue to commit sin. When you are in trouble, you weep and when you become well, again you continue on the path of sin and transgression. How many times has Allah Almighty warned you against performing sin and in spite of this, you continue to go against your word. How many times have you made a promise to Allah Almighty have gone against it. You have also forgotten that the life of this world will come to an end and very soon, you will have to face the life in the grave.’”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Mansur bin Ammaar – may Allah be pleased with him – narates, “I swear by Allah that I left this person in this state where my eyes were full of tears. I did not even reach he front door when I was informed that this person had died. We make Du’a that Allah Almighty protect us from this calamity. There is no doubt that there are many people who spend their times in Ibadah and yet, at the end of the day, their end is very bad. (Ar Roaud Al Faa’iq)
If the state of the person who commits evil deeds, what will be the state of that person who has evil beliefs? At the same time, these people do not even male Taubah before they die. Imagine the state of these people in their graves.
