Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates:
Once, Ayniyah bin Hasan arrived in Madina Shareef and he was a guest of his nephew, Hurr bin Qais. Hadrat Sayyiduna Hurr – may Allah be pleased with him – was very close to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. He was also a member of the consultative forum of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. The age of the members did not matter.
Ayniyah then mentioned to him that he would like to meet the leader and he noticed that his nephew was close to the leader. Therefore, he should seek permission for him to meet the leader (of the Muslims). When Hadrat Sayyiduna Hurr – may Allah be pleased with him – sought permission for his uncle, he was allowed to meet Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. However, when Ayniyah entered, he shouted, “O the son of Khattab! I swear by Allah Almighty that you do not give us enough money and you do not decide justly among us.”
As soon as he heard these words, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – flew into a major rage and he was about to assault the person.
However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Hurr – may Allah be pleased with him – came in between and said to him, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! There is no doubt that Allah Almighty had commanded His Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that, ‘And O (Muhammad) adopt forgiveness, and enjoin virtue, and turn away from the ignorant.’ (Surah Al ‘Araf, 199) There is no doubt that this person is from among the Jaahils.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Hurr – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that the moment he narrated this verse, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – did not go forward because he was very strict in obeying the command of the Qur’an.” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef)
There is no doubt that to pardon someone and to forgive anyone in spite of the fact that one can punish that person is indeed a very great feat. In Surah Shura, this message is also given wherein one is informed that to pardon someone and to display patience are certainly actions which are considered as very mighty indeed.
It is reported that one day, someone used a foul word against Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr Ghifaari – may Allah be pleased with him. He then said to the person, “Between me and Jannah there is a very dangerous valley which blocks the way. If I succeed in crossing this valley, then I swear in the Name of Allah Almighty that I do not care about your words. If Allah Almighty prohibits me from crossing, then I am certainly entitled for more words of insult than that which you have mentioned.” (Hujjatul Arab)
