In the Anwaar-e-Qamariyah, Khawaja Qamarudeen Siyalwi – may Allah be pleased with him – writes:

Once, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – decided to go for Jihad. He was alone in a certain jungle. Suddenly his horse collapsed and died. He was standing on one side extremely concerned when suddenly another person approached him. When this person came near, he asked him, “O Abdullah ibn Mubaarak! What is the reason that you are standing in this place?”

He said that he intended to go for Jihad but his horse suddenly died. This person then began to pass his hand over the entire horse and unexpectedly the horse stood up as if nothing had happened to it. This person then held the reins and the horse and allowed the great Saint to climb on the horse. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – then narrates that when he arrived in the battlefield, this person was also there. At the same time, whenever he went forward, this same person was also always before him fighting the enemies. He was extremely surprised as to who this person was and only realised this when he looked at the feet of the person. Whenever this person placed his feet on the ground, greenery used to appear. He immediately understood that this was Hadrat Khidr – peace be upon him.
