Once the blessed Mother of Faithful, Hadrat Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her – asked the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, “O Prophet of Allah! Which are those items which a person is not allowed to restrict and refuse?”

 

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “It is salt, water and fire.”

 

She then asked, “O Prophet of Allah, water is something which I have understood, however what is the significance of salt and fire?”

 

He replied, “Whoever gives salt, it is like he had given charity for all the food because it is through salt that the food becomes tasty. And whoever gives fire, then it is as if he had given charity for all the food on which the food was cooked on. And he who gives a little water, where water is found, then it is like he had freed a slave. And he who gives water in such a place where there is no water, then it is as if he had made the person come alive.”

 

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has also declared, “There are four items of Barakah which Allah Almighty has revealed from the heavens on earth. They are water, salt, fire and iron.”
