Shaikh Abu Ali Daqaaq reports that once someone made a false accusation against the Awliya in the court of the Khalifah in Baghdad Shareef. In other words, the person mentioned that these people had false beliefs which were completely contrary to Islam. Because of this, eminent Awliya such as Hadrat Sayyiduna Junaid Baghdadi, Abul Hasan Nuri, Shihaam, Qaasim, Riqaam, etc. – may Allah be pleased with them – were arrested.

Since Hadrat Sayyiduna Junaid Baghdadi – may Allah be pleased with him – was considered a Mufti, he was released. However, the rest of them were ordered to be killed. When the executioner was called forward to carry out the beheading, the first person to step forward was Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Nuri – may Allah be pleased with him. The executioner then asked him, “Why is it that you are the first person to step forward even though it is not your turn?”

The eminent Saint replied, “The reason is that the rest of my companions can also live a few more minutes.”

When this was conveyed to the Khalifah, he ordered that this case be presented to the Qadi (Chief Justice). The purpose was so that the Qadi would be able to question them on their actual beliefs.

When they appeared in court, the Qadi asked Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Nuri – may Allah be pleased with him – a few questions pertaining to Islamic Jurisprudence and all his answers were correct and according to the general beliefs of the Muslims. Thereafter, the eminent Saint also gave the Qadi some advice and he was so affected by this advice that he began to weep.

The Qadi then wrote a special note to the Khalifah which read, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! If these people are heretics, who in the world can actually be called Muslims?”

When the Khalifah read this message, he immediately had all of them released. (Tafseer Ruhul Bayan, 8/259)
