Download PDF: [S] False Accusation against a Governor (Islamic story)
It is mentioned that once during the rule of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – Hadrat Mughyrah bin Shu’bah – may Allah be pleased with him – was sent to Bahrain as its Governor. Since Hadrat Mughyrah bin Shu’bah – may Allah be pleased with him – was noted for his firmness and strictness, the people did not accept him. They then decided to plot against him and to make some plan which would remove him and also make him look bad in the sight of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.
One of the leaders of this tribe then hatched a plan. He mentioned to them that if they could gather a hundred thousand Dirhams and give it to him, he would go to Madina Shareef and report that this was actually the money which Hadrat Mughayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – had actually stolen from the Baitul Maal and had given him to keep. In this manner, Hadrat Mughyrah bin Shu’bah – may Allah be pleased with him – would be accused of stealing and then he will also be removed from his position.
All of them then gathered a hundred thousand Dirhams and gave it to this person who then went to Madina Shareef to report the “theft” Hadrat Mughyrah bin Shu’bah – may Allah be pleased with him.
When he went to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – he said exactly what he had come to say. He also mentioned that Hadrat Sayyiduna Mughayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – was therefore guilty of stealing from the Baitul Maal.
Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then called Hadrat Sayyiduna Mughayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – to question him about this.
When – may Allah be pleased with him – reached Madina Shareef he said that this person was a liar and that he had actually stolen two hundred thousand Dirhams and asked where the other one hundred was. When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him as to why he had done this, he replied that due to his immense expense of looking after his family.
When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this, he became angry with the accuser and asked him where the other one hundred thousand was which he had stolen from Hadrat Sayyiduna Mughayrah – may Allah be pleased with him.
By now, this person was already embarrassed and realised that he had been caught out. He then admitted, “Allah Almighty bestow His Divine Grace on you. The truth is that Mughayrah had never stolen any monies and this was merely a plot against him.”
When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – asked Hadrat Sayyiduna Mughayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – about his version of the story, he replied, “I knew that this person was merely accusing me without any basis, that is why I decided to embarrass him instead. In fact, I had never taken any money from anyone.” (Sayr ‘Alaamul Nubla)
