It is mentioned that once the conditions became so bad in Egypt that the army continued to suffer defeat upon defeat. In a state of desperation, the King of Egypt at the time, Ismail bin Ebrahim, then instructed the ‘Ulama in Azhar Shareef that they should sit facing the Qiblah and complete the recital of the Bukhari Shareef.  However, in spite of this, the conditions did not cease. Ismail bin Ebrahim then became very angry and in this angry state he went to Azhar Shareef. He screamed at the ‘Ulama present, “What are you people reciting? Is this not the Bukhari Shareef and are you not the same ‘Ulama who our pious predecessors have spoken about? And that it is through you that Allah is able to dispel difficulties and problems but, it seems like He has not accepted any Du’a made by you people!”

When the ‘Ulama heard this, they were speechless and totally shocked. They did not know what answer to give. They started to look at one another hoping that someone would be able to say something. Finally a very old and senior scholar who was seated at the back of the group stood up and angrily declared, “Ismail all of this is because of you, all of this is because of your disobedience. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had warned us that, ‘You (people) would certainly continue to command good and prohibit evil and then Allah Almighty (knows fully well) that evil people will overpower you and (at that time) the best among you will make Du’a, but their Du’a would not be accepted.’

When he mentioned this, the other ‘Ulama present were absolutely silence. The King did not utter one single word and walked out. In other words, he could not give this scholar an answer. It seemed as if the words of the Hadith Shareef had overpowered his senses and he also felt that perhaps the loss being suffered by his army was also due to him.

The rightly guided ‘Ulama always speak the truth

When the King had departed, the other ‘Ulama present looked at this senior scholar and told him in no uncertain terms that he had endangered his own life by speaking in this manner to the King. While this was going on, the servants of the King arrived and wanted to know who had spoken to the King in this manner. The senior scholar mentioned that he had spoken in this manner. He displayed no fear or apprehension at all. As he began to leave towards the palace, the other scholars began to bid him farewell as if they would never see him again.

When he entered the private chambers of the King, he noticed that next to the King there was an empty chair and the King asked to him to sit on this chair. The King then asked him to repeat his words which he had mentioned in Azhar Shareef. The Islamic scholar then mentioned exactly what he had mentioned at the beginning. He also clearly explained in depth the message of the Hadith Shareef.

The King then asked him as to what wrong he had committed and because of which they were facing these difficulties. He replied, “Have the courts not passed the laws that usury or interest is now permissible? Has the climate in the country not reached such a state where people are under the impression that adultery has become lawful? Is alcohol now not openly permitted? In like manner, I can give you a long list of things which are committed in this country without anyone stopping it.”

After this he declared, “And yet, you continue to ask for heavenly help. How is this possible? When you yourself have allowed all of these un-Islamic activities to occur, do you think that Allah Almighty has not become angry? In spite of all of these things, which you yourself has allowed, you complain that the Du’a of the ‘Ulama are not accepted! Allah Almighty has clearly stated in the Qur’an that He will never change the state of a nation, until and unless they do not change themselves.”

The King then asked, “What can we do? We are living with people who are English. This is due to their evil habits.”

The Shaikh became happy with this answer and declared, “If this is the case, how can it be the fault of the Bukhari Shareef?”

After hearing this, the King remained silent for a few moments and then declared, “You have spoken the truth, you have spoken the truth.”

He was also so happy with this straight and clear answer from this senior Islamic scholar that he instructed that he paid a government stipend every month. When the senior scholar returned to Azhar Shareef, he was warmly greeted by the ‘Ulama present there who genuinely felt that they would never see him again.

There is no doubt that the rightly guided ‘Ulama never fear anyone when speaking the truth. In the path of Allah Almighty, they endeavour to walk the straight path and do not move away from anyone because that person may have some high government position.
