It is mentioned that once the Khalifah in Damascus ordered that the son of Imam Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him, Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Muthannah – may Allah be pleased with him, be caught and jailed in Madina Shareef.
Not very long after this, Waleed sent a message to the Governor of Madina Shareef that in fact, Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Muthannah – may Allah be pleased with him – be also be whipped in public inside Masjidun Nabawi. He was also instructed to read this official command on the Mimbar of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
While this was going, at that moment Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Zainul Aabideen – may Allah be pleased with him – entered the Masjid and sat next to his cousin who was already tied in chains.
He then mentioned to him to read Du’a and he made Du’a.
When Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Hasan Muhtannah – may Allah be pleased with him – read this Du’a a few times, suddenly the Governor, Saleh bin Abdullah, had a complete change of heart. He came down of the Mimbar and said, “It is my opinion that Hasan Muthannah has been unfairly jailed, therefore, I have decided to change my mind about having him whipped and I will also inform Waleed about my decision.”
A few days later, an official letter was also received from Waleed in which he himself made it clear that Hasan Muthannah – may Allah be pleased with him – was innocent and therefore, he should be freed from jail.
Abdullah bin Abbaan Saqafi narrates:
I was once sent by Yusuf bin Hujjaj to capture the eminent companion, Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik – may Allah be pleased with him.
I then took a small force with me and when I reached his house, I noticed that was sitting peacefully on his verandah. I then said to him, “The Governor is calling you in his court.” He was surprised and asked which Governor I was referring to. I mentioned that name Yusuf bin Hujjaj. When he heard this name, he became extremely angry and informed me, “May Allah Almighty disgrace him. He is a traitor and a mutineer. He is also someone who disobeys the Command of Allah and His Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.”
He then woke up and walked immediately to face Hujjaj bin Yusuf. The following conversation then took place.
Yusuf: Is you name Anas bin Maalik?
Anas bin Malik: Yes, my name is Anas bin Malik.
Yusuf: You are someone who insults me and also curses me in private and in public?
Anas bin Malik: Yes, and there is no doubt that you are someone who is entitled to be cursed.
Yusuf: Why is this so?
Anas bin Malik: The reason is that you are disobedient to Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. You respect those who are open enemies of Allah and always try to humiliate the friends of Allah.
Yusuf: Are you aware of why I have called you to my court?
Anas bin Malik: No, I have no idea why you have called me to this place.
Yusuf: I have called you to my court so that I could have the chance of killing you in a very despicable manner.
Anas bin Malik: If I knew that death was in your control, I would have worshipped you. However, I have absolute certainty that without the Divine Command of Allah Almighty nothing can happen to me and there is no way that you can harm me.
Yusuf: Why, do you believe that I cannot kill you?’
Anas bin Malik: The reason is that I have been given such a Du’a by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that whoever recites this Du’a during the day, he will be protected the entire day from any harm from any oppressor and today I have recited this Du’a.
Yusuf: Is it possible that you can also give me this Du’a?
Anas bin Malik: I seek protection in Allah Almighty. Never, as long as I am alive, I cannot teach this Du’a to anyone.
Hujjaj then instructed his guards to allow Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik – may Allah be pleased with him – to leave the court. However, they informed him that he had instructed them to bring this person and now he is releasing him without taking any action against this person. When Hujjaj heard this complaint, he replied, “What can I do? I could see two lions above his shoulders who had their mouths wide open. They also wanted to attack me. This is the reason that I had no choice but to release him for my own safety.”
It is reported that when the eminent companion was about to pass away, he taught a Du’a to his brothers.
Both incidents prove to us that during times of difficulty and stress, the Du’a of a true believer is like a shield and protection. Therefore, we also urge Muslims to read these Du’as at least once in the morning and evening so that they can also be protected from all oppression and oppressive people.
Muslims should also remember that the more certainty and belief they have, the more the effect of the Du’a and Wazifah. Allah Almighty has also clearly mentioned in the Qur’an that when you call to Him, He certainly listens to your plea and Du’a. It is also advised that instead of running to numerous doors and pleading to people it is better that we continue to plead to Allah Almighty. If one pleads to Allah Almighty with sincerity, there is no reason his Du’a should not be accepted. In the Hadith Shareef it is mentioned that when a person picks up his hand to make a Du’a, Allah Almighty feels it below His Divine Dignity to refuse to accept the Du’a of that person. Therefore, we should look for all occasions to make Du’a in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty with sincerity and honesty. (Ruhani Hikaayah)
