Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – mentions that when the famous Munafiq, Abdullah ibn Ubay, died his son approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and said to him, “Please give me your kurta so that I can wrap him with it and please also perform the Janazah and make Du’a for his pardon.”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then handed his kurtah to this person and also informed him that when the time for the Janazah is ready, he should be called. When the time arrived, this person approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. However, when he was about to commence the Janazah Salaah, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – held Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – from the back and said, “Has the Allah Almighty not prohibited us from reading the Janazah of the Munafiq?” Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “I have been given both choices.”

In Surah Taubah, verse 84, the Holy Qur’an declares:

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلٰۤی اَحَدٍ مِّنْہُمۡ مَّاتَ اَبَدًا وَّلَاتَقُمْ عَلٰی قَبْرِہٖ ؕ اِنَّہُمْ کَفَرُوۡا بِاللہِ وَرَسُوۡلِہٖ وَمَاتُوۡا وَہُمْ فٰسِقُوۡنَ ﴿۸۴﴾

“And never offer funeral prayers for any of them who dies, nor stand by his grave;

indeed they disbelieved in Allah and His Noble Messenger, and they died as sinners.”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also added, “Whether I make Du’a for these people or do not make Du’a for them, it is equal. If I make Du’a seventy times for them, still Allah Almighty will never ever pardon them.” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Nujaid Imran bin Haseen Khuzaa’i – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that once a female from the Jaheniyah tribe approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and admitted that she had become guilty of adultery.

She mentioned that she had become pregnant through this act of adultery. She also requested Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that she be stoned to death as this was her prescribed punishment. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then called her immediate family and told them to look after the female and when she gives birth, they were to bring her back.

After she gave birth, her family brought her back to face the punishment. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then instructed that she tied firmly with a cloth and she was then stoned to death.

Thereafter, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – performed her Janazah Salaah. At this moment, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – asked, “O Prophet of Allah, you are performing the Janazah Salaah of someone like this?”

When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard this objection, he replied, “(O Umar, you have no idea) that this female had made such sincere Taubah that if this Taubah is distributed among seventy menfolk in Madina Shareef, it would be sufficient for them (to be pardoned). Is there anything better than the fact that this female had given her life for the Divine Pleasure of Allah?” (Sahih Muslim Shareef)
