Hadrat Sayyiduna Bashar bin Abdullah bin Bashaar – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates, “It is reported that once a person among the Bani Israeel was about to pass away and on this occasion, his wife began to weep which is to be expected. He then told his wife, ‘Do you wish that even after death I am still close to you?’ His wife nodded her head. He then said to her, ‘When I pass away, you must place my body in a box and keep the box in the house. My body will not deteriorate.’

“After he died, his wife did what he told her. However, a little while later when she opened the box, she noticed that one ear of her husband had deteriorated. She then thought to herself that her husband had never spoken a lie to her in her entire life and he had promised that his body will never deteriorate, however how was it that the one ear had deteriorated. She was extremely concerned about this. As she was thinking about this, Allah Almighty returned the soul of this person and revealing the reason for this, he mentioned, ‘Once, a needy person called on me for help. I heard his voice, however, I did not come to his aid. This is the reason that my one ear has deteriorated. I had the power to help, but did not help.’” (Uyunul Hikaayah)
