Ibn Abid Dunya – may Allah be pleased with him – records from a long chain of narrators that Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have stated that, “Once a person approached the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and asked, ‘O Prophet of Allah, please show me such an action though which Allah Almighty will make me His beloved slave and the people will also start to love me.’  The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, ‘Do not pay attention to the world. Through this, Allah Almighty will make you His beloved servant and whatever wealth and possession you have, leave this for the people, in this manner, even the people will begin to love you.’” (At Targheeb)

 

He records from Ishaq bin Saluli – may Allah be pleased with him – who states, “My friends and I presented ourselves to Hadrat Sayyiduna Daud Ta’i – may Allah be pleased with him . At the time, he was sleeping on the ground and I mentioned to my friend that this is certainly a human who is a Zaahid. However the Great saint replied, ‘A Zaahid is that person who has the power, but refrains.’” In other words, he has the power to acquire the riches and wealth of this world, but he refuses to accept any of it. He records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Fudail bin Ayyaz – may Allah be pleased with him – who states that, “A real Zaahid is that person who is satisfied with whatever Allah Almighty Wills all the time.”

 

He records from Kalbi who mentions that once he met Hadrat Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – in Mecca Shareef and asked him a question. However, he did not give an answer. I then said aloud, “O those who are Jurists of Islam! We are asking you a question and yet you refuse to answer.” When Hadrat Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – heard these words, he replied, “How unfortunate are you. Have you ever seen a real Faqeeh in your life? What do you know who a real Faqeeh is? A true Faqeeh is that person who pays no attention to the world and only concentrates on the Hereafter and someone who has in-depth knowledge of religion.” (Hulyatul Awliyah, Tahzeeb)
