It is reported that once, ten ‘Ulama came to visit Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him. At that moment, there was nothing he had in his house to offer these guests. He only had one horse which he for Jihad. He decided to slaughter this horse and also prepared food with the meat of the horse.
When his wife saw this, she was very angry and told him a few words. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – then went into one room and took out some items which were equal in value to her Mehr and then immediately divorced her. He also mentioned that a person who cannot take care of their guests, that person is not fit to be his wife.
After a few days, a person approached him and said, “O Imaamul Muslimeen! I have a daughter whose mother has passed away and every day she is in extreme grief and sometimes shreds her clothes due to this extreme grief. Today, she has informed me that she wants to enter your lecture gathering and it is my request that you should give her a few words of advice so that she becomes calmer and her grief also decreases. Perchance, she will become more tranquil and content.”
When Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – went on the Mimbar, he lectured in such a manner that the grief of this lady disappeared and she completely recovered from the sadness of losing her mother.
When she returned home, she said her father, “I make Taubah and promise that in future I will not allow myself to earn the Divine Anger of the Allah Almighty. However, I have one wish.”
When her father asked her what this wish was, she replied, “You have always mentioned to me that there are many people out there who are wealthy and powerful and many have come to you to propose marriage to me. However, I am using the Divine Name of Allah Almighty that except for Abdullah ibn Mubaarak you must not perform my marriage to anyone else. Even if he is poor, still we are rich and wealthy.”
When her father heard these words, he was very happy and he understood that Allah Almighty had now cured his daughter and that all her grief and sadness will now finally disappear. He then performed her Nikah with Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – and also gave him a large financial gift after the marriage. At the same time, he also gave him ten horses so that he could also take part in Jihad.
One night, while Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – was sleeping, he saw a dream and someone was saying to him, “If you have divorced the miserly lady who refused to feed your guests, we have given in marriage to you a much more noble lady and if you sacrificed only one horse to feed your guests, we have given you ten horses in reward. We do not waste the action of those who do noble and good deeds. Those who behave with us in this fashion, they are not harmed in any way and in the future also, they are not harmed.” (Nihaayatul Adab)
This is the reward of feeding people and feeding any guest. At the same time, whatever Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – had spent on a Sunnah action, Allah Almighty had rewarded him ten folds.
This is proof of the following Hadith Shareef where the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who trusts in Allah Almighty, Allah is sufficient for him. He who relies on Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will make him independent. He who fears the Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will also decrease the fear this person has for the creation of Allah.”
