It is the Divine Decree of Allah Almighty that sometimes He gives a person a daughter and sometimes He gives a person a son. We see that at times, he gives a person a son and a daughter. At times, the couple have no children their entire life and remain like this forever.

This has also been the example of certain Prophets in the past. It is reported that Nabi Lut – peace be upon him – and Nabi Shu’aib – peace be upon him – only had daughters and no sons. Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him – was only given sons and no daughters. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was given both sons and daughters. Nabi Esa – peace be upon him – and Nabi Yahya – peace be upon him – had no children. (Tafseer Ruhul Bayan, 8/342).

This fact is revealed in Surah Shurah, in the fifth ruku.

However, all of this is the Divine Decree of Allah Almighty. The last part of this verse describes the Divine Attribute of Allah Almighty which is that He is All Knowing, All Powerful. In other words, He has the Divine Knowledge and the Power to know which servant of His will get what He wishes and what they should get. Only the Allah Almighty knows this!

In Surah Baqarah, ruku 26, this is highlighted.

This is also a lesson to people that if they sometimes do not get something which they desire and wish for, perhaps that item or object may not be good for them in the long term. As a matter of fact, when a person sees this, he should display patience. The reason is that it clearly informs us that Allah Almighty is certainly All Knowing. He knows what is good for us and what is bad for us.

We see that in the present day, when people get daughters, they seem to get frustrated and their mood also changes for the worse. As a matter of fact, some people even reject this Divine Gift and become angry. As Muslims, we must remember that this type of behaviour was the behaviour of people in the days of ignorance. In other words, the days before Islam came to the world.

This fact is mentioned in Surah Nahl.

It should be the behaviour of the Muslims that even when they get daughters, they should thank Allah Almighty for this blessing. They should also look at the following Hadith Shareef and consider it as a great source of blessing.

  1. It is a great source of Barakah for a female that her first child is a girl.
  2. A person who gets daughters and treats them well until they become married, then these daughters become a veil for him against the Fire of Hell.
  3. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “You people should not think badly about a daughter because I am also the father of a few daughters.”
  4. When a girl is born, Allah Almighty declares to the girl, “O girl! Go to the earth, I will assist your father.” (Tafseer Ruhul Bayan, 8/342)
