Ibn Katheer in the Al Bidaayah wan Nihaayah narrates the following story.
The Baraamikah were once a family who were considered extremely powerful and also dangerous at the same time. They controlled some of the seats in power under the government of Sultan Harun Rashid. One of their habits was that they also began to decorate the walls of their buildings with gold with the result that their houses and buildings were displayed during the day.
In this manner, this family wasted most of their wealth and power. They also killed many innocent people and also began a process of mutiny. Allah Almighty also created a cure for these people in the form of one of the most powerful persons in his era. There is no doubt that Allah Almighty gives the oppressors a chance and when He chooses the moment to hold them to account, they can never escape.
The manner in which these people were taught a terrible lesson was through someone whom they held in very high esteem. In other words, through Sultan Harun Rashid. In one single night, he arrested the most powerful leaders of this family. They were then whipped in public and their hands and feet were cut. Thereafter, all of them were put to death.
Their wealth was taken away and their females were sold as slaves. It is mentioned that there was an old man from this family who was being whipped and when one of his servants asked him the reason for this disgrace which was brought upon them he replied, “This seems to be a result of a curse which was placed on us by someone whom we had oppressed.”
This is the reason that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The Du’a of an oppressed person is carried above the clouds by Allah Almighty. The doors of the heaven are opened for this door and Allah Almighty declares, ‘I swear by My Divine Greatness that I will certainly help you even if it is after a little while.’” (Sunan ibn Maja)
The same advice was given to Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal – may Allah be pleased with him – when he was sent to Yemen as the new Governor. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – mentioned to him, “Protect yourself from the Du’a of an oppressed person because there is no veil or obstacle between his Du’a and the Divine Court of Allah Almighty”. (Bukhari Shareef, Muslim Shareef)
This is exactly what happened to the above family. No sign of them was left on earth. There is no doubt that one of the people whom they had oppressed had certainly cursed them and this was their eventual damnation.
