Download PDF: [S] Begin with the Bismillah (Islamic Story)
In the treatise Ar Roadul Faa’iq it is mentioned that the first words which a person should utter is that he should take the Divine Name of Allah Almighty in all of his or her activities. The beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Whichever important task does not commence with the ‘Bismillah’, it remains incomplete.” (Ad Durrul Mansur, 1/26)
In other words, that task or deed remains empty of Divine Blessing because the blessed Name of Allah Almighty is so powerful that one is able to acquire its sweet fragrance everywhere. It is also a hidden and apparent Nur in the form of a sweet fragrance. It also eliminates all obstacles and also gives ones immense protection.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Whatever activity does not commence with the ‘Bismillah’, it remains incomplete.” (Al Marj’a As Saabiq)
In one narration instead of the word ‘incomplete’, the words null and void and something without Barakah is used. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – mentions that he heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declare that, “Among people and those who walk on the earth, the most perfect person is that (person) who acquires knowledge. Whenever religion has appeared, he had revitalized it, he has taught people this knowledge and has not asked a price in return. And when the teacher instructs the child to recite the ‘Bismillah’, then Allah Almighty frees the teacher, that child and his parents from the Fire of Hell.” (Tafseer Al Qurtabi)
Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that, “When the ‘Bismillah’ was revealed, the clouds travelled quickly from the East to the West, the wind stopped, the ocean swelled up, the animals began to listen carefully with their ears, stones rained down on the Satan and Allah Almighty Declared, ‘I swear by My Divine Power and Divine Might, whoever has recited the ‘Bismillah’, I will place Barakah in this and whoever reads the ‘Bismillah’ will enter Jannah.’” (Ad Durrul Mansur)
Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir – may Allah be pleased with him – has mentioned that, “When a person enters his house while reciting the ‘Bismillah’, the Satan mentions to himself (and his companions), ‘For you, there is no place to sleep here and there is no food at night.’”
And when a person enters without mentioning the ‘Bismillah’, then the Satan mentions, “You have received a place to sleep tonight and when the ‘Bismillah’ is not read before eating, the Satan also mentions, ‘Tonight, you have received a place to sleep and have also received food to eat.” (Sahih Muslim Shareef)
There is no doubt that through the Divine Name of Allah Almighty, the Satan runs away and there is Barakah in one’s house.
There are numerous other benefits of reciting the ‘Bismillah’ too numerous to mention. If the entire universe begins to write about it, they would never fully complete writing the full extent of its benefit.
Note: Another important point to bear in mind is that the ‘Bismillah’ should only be recited at the beginning of good and noble deeds and not at the beginning of any evil or wicked deed. If one deliberately does this, then certain ‘Ulama have mentioned that it would constitute Kufr. The reason is that it is a clear sign of belittling and insulting the Divine Name of Allah Almighty. Hence, a Muslim should remember the appropriate places of reciting the ‘Bismillah’.
