It is mentioned that once Imamul Haramain – may Allah be pleased with him – attended the invite of a certain influential person. At that time, there were also many other eminent scholars who were also present.

Suddenly, an ordinary person asked him a question. He asked, “Is there any proof that the Allah Almighty is pure of being confined to a certain place or space? In the Qur’an, it is mentioned that the Allah Almighty is established on His Divine Throne. This proves that His actual place is on His Divine Throne.”

However, Imamul Haramain replied that Allah Almighty is pure of space and place. One of the proofs for this is that when Nabi Yunus – peace be upon him – was in the belly of the whale, he called out to Allah Almighty using the word “anta” which means “you”. In other words, “laa ilaaha illa anta”. In other words, when the word “anta” is used it signifies someone who is before you. This is why you greet a person with “kayfah anta” because you are addressing someone who is standing in front of you.

At the same time, when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – went for Me’raj and as as he travelled further, he said to Allah Almighty, “O Allah! I am unable to praise You. You are as You have glorified Yourself.” In this Hadith Shareef also the word used is “anta”. This clearly proves that Allah Almighty is not confined to any space or is not found in only one space or spot. When we see both incidents, in both places the word “anta” has been used. In other words, “you”. This proves that Allah Almighty is everywhere.” (Tafseer Ruhul Bayan)

It is therefore the belief of the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah that Allah Almighty is certainly free and pure of space and place. Whatever is in the creation is a manifestation of His Divine Power and Might.
