At the beginning, Hadrat Sayyiduna Tameen Daari – may Allah be pleased with him – used to bring fermented alcohol to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – as a gift even though Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – never used to consume it. (Bear in mind that this used to be before the prohibition of alcohol was revealed). However Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to accept this gift and give it to others.

When the prohibition came about alcohol, maybe at that time Hadrat Sayyiduna Tameem Daari – may Allah be pleased with him – was unaware of this and as was his normal behaviour he presented Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – with alcohol. When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – saw this, he smiled and said, “This has now become Haraam.” He then asked Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – a very key question.

He asked, “O Prophet of Allah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –, can I sell this and keep the profit?”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “May Allah Almighty curse the Jews. When the fat of cows and goats became Haraam upon them, they then melted this and used to sell it (in a fraudulent) manner. By Allah, as alcohol is Haraam, in like manner to achieve any profit from it is also Haraam.” (Imam Ahmed, Tafseer ibn Katheer)
