It is mentioned that once during the reign of Marwan bin Hakam, a lady named Urwa binte Owais had lodged a complaint against Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him. Hadrat Saeed bin Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – was one of those ten blessed people who were giving news of Jannah in this world. The accusation was that Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – had captured one part of her land illegally.

 

This case was then presented in the court of Marwan. He called for Hadrat Sa’eed bin Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – very respectfully and with all due protocol knowing who this eminent companion was. Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – had also become quite old and hence, there was great respect displayed by everyone. Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – then declared, “How can I illegally capture this piece of land when I bear testimony that I personally heard from the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – who had declared that, ‘Whoever captures the land of another, even a fist full through oppression, the seven earth will be made into a collar and placed around his neck (as punishment).’” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef, #3198)

 

When Marwan heard this, he declared, “After listening to this Hadith Shareef, there is no need for any proof, witnesses or testimony.” He then threw this case out of the court and also made it clear that this was a false accusation which was made against Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – and that there was no basis in any of this.

 

There is no doubt that this was an eminent companion and calling him to court had been shown great disrespect to him. He then picked up his hand and made Du’a, “O Allah! If this lady is speaking a lie, then make her blind and destroy her in that same piece of land.” Consequentially, before she could die, she became blind and one day while walking on this same piece of land, she fell into a hole and died.
