It is mentioned that one of the bravest companions in battle was Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Dujaanah – may Allah be pleased with him. In any battle, he was always seen right at the front of the battle. His full name is Samaak bin Aus bin Kharasha – may Allah be pleased with him. In the Battle of ‘Uhud, his bravery is something which is recorded in the books of history. Besides the battle of Badr, he accompanied the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in all other battles.
On the day of ‘Uhud, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – raised his sword and asked, “Who will fulfil the right of this sword?” Many people came forward but the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – did not give them the sword. At that moment, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Dujaanah – may Allah be pleased with him – asked, “O Prophet of Allah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – what is its right?”
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –replied, “The right of this sword is that it is used so much against the disbelievers that it becomes bent.” (And the disbelievers themselves run from this sword).
When he heard this, he placed a red band on his head and came forward to take the sword. He walked towards the Kuffaar in an act of show. When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – saw this act of show, he declared, “This is such behaviour which is greatly disliked by Allah Almighty, however, not at this instance.”
It mentioned that when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – passed away, a few tribes became apostates and also refused to pay the Zakaah.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – sent an army against these people and among the people who took part in this Jihad was Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Dujaanah – may Allah be pleased with him. At a place called Yamaamah, the Bani Hunaif came against the Muslims and at this battle, the blessed companion showed the same bravery as he did when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was in this mundane world.
It is mentioned that at this place, in between a certain orchard, the apostates had locked themselves in a fort and were fighting against the Muslim from within this fort. It was necessary that a Muslim is able to enter this fort and open the main doors for the Muslims. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Dujaanah – may Allah be pleased with him – then requested the Muslims to throw him over the walls. Some of the Muslims were hesitant to do this but he insisted on them throwing him over the walls. Finally, they agreed to this. It is mentioned that when he landed inside the fort, one of his legs broke, but he did not worry about this. He fought against these masses of people alone until he somehow managed to open the main doors. When this happened, the Muslims poured into the fort and very soon, the apostates were defeated. (Usdul Ghaabah, Dalaailun Nubuwah, Seerat ibn Hishaam)
He was also martyred in this battle due to the amount of wounds he sustained. In fact, because of his immense bravery, the apostates had targeted the blessed companion in this battle. (Usdul Ghaabah, ibn Katheer)
