The Mufassireen narrate:

When Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – passed away, most of the Jews invented many irreligious activities and completely changed their religion. In fact, with their religion, they also mixed many evil beliefs and actions.

However, there was a small group who completely separated themselves from this main community of Jews. They also made sincere Du’a to Allah Almighty to protect and save them from these people who had corrupted the teachings of Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him.

Suddenly, a large hole appeared in the ground.  This small group of people then entered this hole. They found a large expansive and flat piece of land and decided to settle here. Their future generation was also born in this special place. These people continued to live in this area for many generations. They were discovered during the time of Hadrat Sayyiduna Zul Qarnain – may Allah be pleased with him – who travelled past this area and noticed that the population were mostly very aged. None of them seemed to have need of anything. Their graves were also near their respective houses and their place of worship was also a distance from their actual residence. There was no leader or ruler among them.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Zul Qarnain – may Allah be pleased with him – inquired from them, “What is the secret of all these actions?”

They replied, “O Zul Qarnain! The reason that we have Barakah in our life and age is because we help and assist each other. Whenever anyone of us has any dire need, we all get together and make sure that we fulfil the need of that person. In this manner, all of us are self-reliant and self-sufficient. The reason that our graves are near our doorways is because we have heard from our learned people that the grave is a reminder to those living about the reality of death. The reason that our place of worship is far from our residence is because the Prophets have taught us that the more you walk towards the place of Ibadah, the more reward you acquire. The reason that we have no doors in our houses is because there is no stealing in our community. Hence, we have no need for a door. The reason that we do not have a leader or ruler is because we do not oppress each other. We take care of all our actions with justice and fairness. Hence, there is no need for a ruler or a leader.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Zul Qarnain – may Allah be pleased with him – heard these words, he replied, “I have never seen a community like this. If ever I wanted to choose a nation to live among, then certainly I would choose to live among you.” (Ar Rouad Al Faa’iq)
