It is reported that once a worshipper was making Du’a and when he read the verse “Iyyaka na’budu”, he began to feel that indeed he was a great worshipper of Allah Almighty. However, someone mentioned to him the inner words, “You are a liar, you only worship the creation.”

 

When he heard these words, he made sincere Taubah and completely separated himself from the creation. He then stood for Salaah and when he again reached the same words, an inner voice said to him, “You are a liar, you worship your wife.” When he heard this, he divorced his wife.

 

He again started his Salaah and when he reached these words, the inner voice said to him, “You are a liar, you worship your wealth.” He then gave away all of his wealth in charity.

He again began his Salaah and when he reached the same words, the inner voice said to him, “You are a liar, you worship your clothes.” When he heard this, he gave away all of his clothes to the poor and needy and only kept enough clothes to cover himself.

 

He again began his Salaah and when he came to these words, the inner voice said to him, “Now you are truthful. Indeed, you are among those who worship Allah Almighty.” (Nawaadir Al Qalyubi)

 

Bear in mind that this is not something which is practised by ordinary people. The level of someone like this is very high in the world of Tasawwaf. This is someone who divorces himself from everything and only spends his time in Ibadah. Nothing else matters to him. As we have said, this is certainly a special category of Muslims.
