Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Misri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates that, “I once saw a young man who looked extremely poor, pale and thin. He was travelling without any provisions and did not have anything else with him. He did not even have any shoes.”
“I then greeted him and asked, ‘What is the reason that I see you in this condition?’ He began to weep and uttered the following words, ‘He who was in my heart, has melted my body and He who was in my body has melted my heart. If He wishes, He can cut the rope and if He wishes, He can let it be. With me, every action of His is good and noble. There is no doubt that people are rightfully calling me insane and mad, but they are unaware in Whose Love I have gone insane and mad.’”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Radi Allahu ‘Anhu further narrates, “After that, I did not see where the young man had gone.”
Dear Brothers! Look at the condition of these pious people whose condition and state is the best of its nature. How noble is their destination and how nice is their ultimate result. Even the dirt on them looks noble. There is no doubt that people will never become clean and pure until and unless they are not tested with difficulty, trial and tribulations. If this happens and their hearts are content and satisfied and they possess no long hopes and wishes, then on the Day of Judgement, in immense Love for the Allah azza wajal, they will be asked, “Were you patient in difficulty?” They will reply “Yes”, then with the Divine Grace of Allah azza wajal they will be given a drink of purity and which will be a source of authentication or a seal. They were the people who used to oppose their Nafs and used to live in isolation. They used to experience the joy of hunger and destitution in His Path and loved being alone, away from people.
It is said that when the great Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Owais Qarani Radi Allahu ‘Anhu, used to feel hungry and go out in the wild looking for something to eat, the dogs used to bark at him. Once when this happened, he declared, “O dog! Do not trouble the person who does not trouble you. You are able to only eat that which is given to you and I am also eating that which I have been given. If I am able to enter Jannah, then I am better than you and if I enter the Fire of Hell, than you are better than me.”
